American Freestyle canoeing is the art of paddling a canoe on flat water with perfect control of its movements. The canoe is usually leaned over to the side to help the boat turn sharply and efficiently and paddle strokes are taken on either side of the canoe depending on the individual move. Balance, paddle placement and turn initiation are a few keys to this control. Since the movements seem dance-like, some practice this art timed to music, which is the ultimate in control.

In fact, it's best if you intentionally swamp your canoe in calm water and practice the techniques you'll need. That's what I've done here. (yeah, stick to that story, dad!) hey! I don't need your help! Well, actually, I do. Since even a canoe full of water will float, stay with it. You'll be safer and more visible to other boaters. If it's upright, swim it to shore. If the canoe is upside down and you're in flat or slow-moving water you can stand in, raise one end of the canoe to the water's surface. Push down on the opposite end while lifting one gunwale to break the water's suction. Lift the canoe clear of the water, let it drain a few seconds, then roll it upright and guide it to shore. You can re-enter a canoe in deep water, but you will need to practice this. Place your hands on both gunwales (gunnel), near the wide section of the canoe, or in the middle of the bottom, depending on your arm length and strength. Pressing down with both hands and using a strong kick, lift your body upwards until the hips are across the nearest gunwale. Roll onto your back and sit in the bottom of the canoe before bringing your legs in...then use your paddles or hands to propel yourself to shore. Purchase: www.der.org We meet Earl Nyholm, a member of the Ojibwe Nation, as he walks through the woods on Madeleine Island, Wisconsin. He's looking for just the right birch tree to select for the bark which will be used in the making of a traditional Ojibwe canoe. He talks about the respect that the Ojibwe People have for nature and for the spirit of the particular tree used in the making of a canoe following the traditions that had been handed down through the generations. We are told that this spot is a good one for building this canoe as Madeline Island was a sacred place and a center for the Ojibwe Nation in earlier times. We watch the entire process from peeling the bark from the tree to shaping the form of the canoe with heavy rocks and then the elegant stitching together of the canoe's parts. Earl tells us that artists have always depicted birch bark canoes with the distinctive white pattern of the bark on the outside. This is a myth, as they are actually made with the white, outer bark of the tree, on the inside of the canoe. While the task is arduous the work proceeds step by step with the help of other members of the Ojibwe Nation. The excellent camerawork allows us to see in great detail the ingenious process. I flew to the island of Molokai, it's a Hawaiian island next to Oahu. The canoe race itself is across a huge ocean channel, and it took around 5 hours for these athletes to canoe from one island to the next. I was blown away by the fact that they didn't stop at all, in the least bit. For each canoe racer, a motor boat had to follow next to them just to make sure they didn't get lost in the ocean, and someone from the motor boat would have to jump in the ocean and throw the canoe racers a water bottle as they got thirsty, since they had no time to stop. The race was the World Champion solo canoe race, so people from all over the world came to be a part of it. It was an awesome experience to experience it all. As far as the technical details go It was all filmed on a Canon 5D Mark II. I made a video earlier this summer showing my homemade lawn mower boat engine. Now I made the fully functional canoe console for a school architecture project. The camera I filmed with did not pick up on the motors sound very well when i was showing the throttle. The throttle does work and accelerates the boat nicely. Hope you enjoy!

Backcountry 2011 - Island Lake Canoe Route
720P Is best quality. 1080P has blur to it. Completed a trip into Island Lake Forest and Barrens Provincial Conservation Reserve on the Canada day long weekend. This Conservation Reserve is 45 minutes north of Parry Sound and access is via Wahwashkesh Lake. Ontario Headed up farm creek and camped on Wolf Lake for the first night, then continued into Dutton Lake and back to Island Lake for our final night. the route to Island Lake is fairly straight forward with easy portages, however when exploring the other lakes, portages can be rough to non-existent. Take caution when locating the portages between the small lake north of Wolf towards Dutton and the longer portage from the small lake East of Dutton into Island Lake. (the latter is riddled with multiple blazed snowmobile and ATV trails, and there are about 5 portages blazed through here. The most straight forward is flagged and spray-painted orange. NOTE: Take the landing on the South-East side of the small lake and NOT the snowmobile opening as it is longer and easier to get lost. (Found out the hard way). Novice-Intermediate to Island Lake Intermediate-Advanced for access to the other lakes Makes a great 2-3 day trip or a relaxing week exploring all the islands and surrounding lakes.
