Kashima Shin Ryu Part I

Demonstration of Kashima Shin Ryu on Riga Taikai 2009. Kashima-Shinryū is a nearly 500 years old Japanese koryu martial art. The art was somewhat popularized in the 20th century by Kunii Zen'ya (1894-1966), the 18th generation soke (headmaster). The Current 'Soke' is 21st Generation Kunii Masakatsu. The line is still headed by the Kunii family but is more or less honorific as the responsibility for the preservation and teaching of the ryu is instilled in a 'Shihanke' - currently represented by Seki Humitake. 'Shihanke' roughly translates as 'instructors house' and is something which is not uncommon in Koryu Bujutsu.

KASHIMA ICHI-NO-TACHI.wmv

KASHIMA ICHI-NO-TACHI 'The centerpiece of Matsumoto[ Bizen-no-kami]s swordsmanship was the concept of ichi-no-tachi. ... To perform ichi-no-tachi the swordsman enters his opponent's striking range, drawing an attack, which he makes no attempt to block or otherwise divert. Instead, he steps inside—through, not around—and past the blow, to deliver a decisive stroke of his own.' [Karl Friday, Legacies of the Sword, (University of HawaiI Press, 1997), p. 27] 'The method of performing techniques used by Matsumoto Bizen-no-kami ... at the time when he developed Kashima Ichi no Tachi consisted of upper-body evasion and footwork evasion performed not just as a single action, but also performed at the same time as the attack. This method of evasion in a single action consists of the bodily movement expressed by the technical term "serikomi" (literally, "to squeeze in").' [Seki Humitake, Hassun no Nobegane, Correctly Transmitted Kashima-Shinryû, www.kashima-shinryu.jp/English/i_historical_fact.html, translated by William M. Bradford] 'In essence, musōken is an extension of Matsumoto Bizen-no-kamis ichi-no-tachi, whereby the opponent stops an opponents technique by positioning himself so as to distort the opponents perception in a manner that prevents him from completing the attack. ... The swordsman ... steps into the blow, at the same time drawing his own sword and flipping it with his wrist so that it points at the opponents eyes. At the finish of this movement, his sword is held ...
