Tari Kebyar Duduk

One of the best known Balinese dances, this dance was created in 1925 by the well-known I Nyoman Mario. The name of the dance is referring to the "seated" position which predominates this dance. Dancers though, jokingly call it "Tari Kebyar Jongkok" which is humorous if you understand Indonesian ;).

Balinese Gamelan - Kebyar style (Bali Arts Festival 1997)

Some more footage from the 1997 Bali Arts Festival in Denpasar Indonesia. It's interesting to me hearing the difference in tunings between this group and the other ensemble clip I posted. I'm sorry I don't know the name of this very talented all female ensemble. They were terrific. Here is a desricption of the gong kebyar style from wiki: en.wikipedia.org Gamelan gong kebyar is a modern style or genre of Balinese gamelan music. Kebyar means "the process of flowering", and refers to the explosive changes in tempo and dynamics characteristic of the style. It is the most popular form of gamelan in Bali, and its best known musical export. Gong kebyar music is based on a five-tone scale called pelog selisir (tones 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6 of the 7-tone pelog scale), and is characterized by brilliant sounds, syncopations, sudden and gradual changes in sound colour, dynamics, tempo and articulation, and complex, complementary interlocking melodic and rhythmic patterns called kotekan.

Gamelan Gong Kebyar - Paksi Neglayang

Hypnotic gamelan piece from Bali. Search youtube for the video version of the performance. A gamelan is a musical ensemble from Indonesia, typically from the islands of Bali or Java, featuring a variety of instruments such as metallophones, xylophones, drums and gongs; bamboo flutes, bowed and plucked strings. Gamelan gong kebyar is a modern style or genre of Balinese gamelan music. Kebyar means "the process of flowering", and refers to the explosive changes in tempo and dynamics characteristic of the style. This results in sound quite different from music played in a western tuning system. Many gamelan orchestras will include instruments in each tuning, but each individual instrument will only be able to play notes in one. The precise tuning used differs from ensemble to ensemble, and give each ensemble its own particular flavour. The intervals between notes in a scale are very close to identical for different instruments within each gamelan, but the intervals vary from one gamelan to the next. Balinese gamelan instruments are commonly played in pairs which are tuned slightly apart to produce interference beats, ideally at a consistent ...

Kebyar Legong Part 1

A full performance of Kebyar Legong. This is purportedly one of the earliest dance pieces composed for Gamelan Gong Kebyar and is credited to the great north Balinese composer and choreographer Pan Wandres. It was probably composed around 1914 in the village of Jagaraga. This is performed by Padepokan Dwi Mekar representing the regency of Buleleng for the 2003 Bali Arts Festival. The group was taught by Wandres' grandson, I Made Keranca. Its a long and astonishing piece that requires virtuousity on the part of both the musicians and the dancers.

Balinese gong kebyar "Gunung Sari" plays "Kapi Raja"

Kapi Raja is a kebyar-style opening piece for a Balinese gamelan performance. The Gong Kebyar Gunung Sari of Peliatan, near Ubud, Central Bali, often starts a performance with Kapi Raja. I recorded this piece in Puri Agung Peliatan, January 2011. I kept the camera pointed towards kendang, gieng and gangsas, so the video does not show the reong. Halfway through the piece someone suddenly remembers to turn the lights on.
