Kempff plays Schubert Sonata No.1, D157 (I)

First and unfinished Sonata of Schubert in E major, D 157, composed in 1815, first published in 1888. ~~~ Although all three movements of the sonata are complete, in fact the sonata is unfinished, even though some sources may list it as a complete work. There are a couple of factors which constitute strong evidence that the work is incomplete and that a further movement was probably intended to be added. An indication to that is the last movements being a Menuetto and Trio, which was to be assumed a peculiar way to end a sonata with, although not unheard of, in early 19th century. But a stronger argument on the sonata's incomplete status is the fact that this Minuet and Trio is in the key of B major, not the sonata's tonic key of E major. It would have been extremely unusual at the time to end a sonata in a key other than its tonic. It is likely that Schubert intended to add a fourth movement in the key of E major, but he either left the sonata incomplete deliberately, or did write the last movement that has since been lost. I. Kempff plays Beethoven "Eroica Variations" (I)

Fifteen Variations and Fugue for Piano in E-flat major, op.35; composed in 1802, first published in 1803; dedicated to Count Maurice Lichnowski. As it served as the model for the finale of the Third Symphony, Fifteen Variations became known as the Eroica Variations. In both, the bass of the theme is heard first on its own and then with introductory variations with two, three, and then four voices, before the theme is heard in its full form. ~~~ PART I : - Introduzione col Bassa del Tema / Allegretto vivace - Tema - Var I - IX PART II : www.youtube.com - Variations X - XV PART III : www.youtube.com - Finale. Alla fuga ~~~ A letter of Beethoven highlights how his dedication of the Variations to Maurice Lichnowski happened, replacing Abbé Maximilian Stadler, a priest and artist (1748 - 1833), who was as glowing admirer of Mozart as he was a despiser of Beethoven whereby Beethoven was so friendly with the artistic Abbé, that initially, he thought of dedicating the Variations to him. Abbé, however, was never weary of running down Beethoven's music, and many of his remarks must have reached the composers ears; consequently the dedication was withdrawn. Beethoven's letter, from Vienna, on April 8, 1803, to Breitkopf & Haertel in Leipzig : I have been long wanting to write to you, but my many business matters do not allow me to carry on even a short correspondence. With regard to the Variations, you are mistaken in thinking that there are not so many. They could not, however, be <b>...</b>

Kempff plays Schubert Impromptu op.142 (D 935) no.1

Impromptu op.142 (D 935) no.1 in F minor, composed in 1827, recorded in 1965. ~ As the first and last pieces of Op.posth 142 (D 935) impromptus are in the same key, F minor, and the set bears some resemblance to a 4-movement sonata, these Impromptus have been thought of being a sonata in disguise, notably by Robert Schumann and Alfred Einstein, who claim that Schubert called them Impromptus, and allowed them to be individually published to enhance their sales potential. However, this claim has been refuted by contemporary musicologists such as Charles Fisk, who established important differences between the set of Impromptus and Schubert's acknowledged multi-movement works. ~~~

Ludwig van Beethoven Sonata for Piano and Violin No.5, F major, op.24 " Spring" ll.Adagio molto expressivo lll.Schezo allegro molto Wilhelm Kempff (Pianist, Composer, Arranger) Biography (See Yehudi Menuhin's biography in part 1) Wilhelm Kempff (1895 - 1991) was a German pianist and composer. He studied in Berlin and Potsdam. He toured widely throughout contintental Europe and much of the rest of the world, but did not make his first London appearance until 1951, and did not play in New York until 1964. He gave his last public performance in Paris in 1981 and died in Positano, Italy at the age of 95. Considered one of the greatest pianists of 20th century, Wilhelm Kempff is celebrated today for his recordings of Schumann, J. Brahms, Schubert, Mozart, JS Bach, F. Liszt, Chopin and particularly, of Lv Beethoven. He recorded over a period of some sixty years. Kempff was among the first to record the complete sonatas of F. Schubert long before these works became popular. He also recorded two celebrated sets of the complete Beethoven sonatas, one in mono and the other in early stereo. He also played chamber music with Yehudi Menuhin and Pierre Fournier among others. Particularly famous are the recordings of the complete Beethoven sonatas for violin and piano with Y. Menuhin. In 1957 Kempff began to give an annual Beethoven interpretation course in his villa in Positano. Six years after his death, friend and former student John O'Conor took over the course. Beethoven / Wilhelm Kempff, 1964: Bagatelles, Op. 126 - Complete DG Recording

In this 1964 recording, the late German pianist Wilhelm Kempff (1895-1991) performs the six Bagatelles, Op. 126, by Ludwig van Beethoven. I created this video from the LP depicted above, "Beethoven: Bagatelles - Wilhelm Kempff, Piano," issued in 1965 by Deutsche Grammophon, serial number 138934. So that there is no question in the mind of the listener, I rely principally on images of the LP label (3:43) and LP jacket (4:55) in order to document the authenticity of historically important recordings such as these. 1. Andante con moto 2. Allegro (3:02) 3. Andante (4:53) 4. Presto (7:12) 5. Quasi Allegretto (10:35) 6. Presto (11:58) Beethoven dedicated these works to his brother, Johann van Beethoven.
