Well, there are some new developments in this story. Motive Industries along with a company called Toronto Electric, founded a project known as Project Eve. Project Eve is basically a collaboration of Canadian businesses trying to bind their skills to the creation of greener cleaner highway capable electric vehicles. One of those collaborations is called The Kestral. Motive Industries will do the bodywork, A quebec company called TM4 Electrodynamic Systems will be providing the motor and I assume the powertrain as well. It's promised to have a top speed of 90km/h and depending on the battery system could deliver a range of 40-160km on a charge. We don't know exactly what it looks like yet but a recent announcement said it would be unveiled in Vancouver on September 13th to 16th this year at the EV 2010 VÉ Conference and Trade Show. The Kestrel is the engine from a 1970 Triumph Bonneville, which Falcon cut in half and completely re-engineered. With the exception of a few critical pieces (crankcases, gearbox, and 10 inches of the original Triumph headstock), everything -- including the frame, girder front forks, gas and oil tanks, exhausts, handlebars, levers, even the cylinders -- was fabricated in-house from blocks, sheets and rods of steel, brass and aluminum. Trapped when she was a juvenile in Oct 2008 (non-imprinted) and flown by a federally licensed falconer (me) through the winter, this female American kestrel was released (with a little encouragement) back to the wild this morning. With any luck, she'll find herself a mate and raise a family next year. First year mortality rate for wild kestrels is about 75%, but that drops to about just 6% when a falconer is taking care of them. Now just imagine what kind of good falconers can do for peregrines and other birds of prey! Godspeed little birdie. It was a pleasure spending time with you.

In the early 70's, a symphonic rock quintet were doing the London college circuit when they caught the attention of producer John Worth who signed them and released their one album in 1975. It didn't sell too well but the boys took it more or less in stride and then went their separate ways. Guitarist Dave Black, who had composed the lion's share of the material, went on to become a member of David BOWIE's band for a few years and then formed several other groups of his own. Some thirty years later, a Japanese man was reported to have paid £366 to acquire the album, through an internet auction on eBay. In the words of guitarist Black who heard about the incident: "It's amazing to think that 30 years after we made the recording that the album is now being described as a prog-rock masterpiece." You may or may not agree with the word "masterpiece", but the album does feature enough mellotron blasts to hook the most fleeting tron admirer. The eponymous LP also features some good guitar work, excellent vocals and interesting arrangements; the compositions are simple and straightforward - call it a sort of prog/MOR crossover, if you will. Not overly complex but pleasantly melodious and well executed. If you're a tron enthusiast or into bands such as FRUUP, SPRING, FANTASY or early MOODY BLUES, it would be worth lending an ear to KESTREL's album.
