The protest came exactly a year before the 2012 election and the pipeline is shaping up to be a major political issue. www.democracynow.org - Environmental activists are claiming victory after the Obama administration announced Thursday it will postpone any decision on the proposed 1700-mile Keystone XL tar sands oil pipeline until 2013. The announcement was made just days after more than 10000 people encircled the White House calling on President Obama to reject the project, the second major action against the project organized by Bill McKibben's 350.org and Tar Sands Action. In late August and early September, some 1200 people were arrested in Washington, DC, in a two-week campaign of civil disobedience. "We believe that this delay will kill the pipeline," says the Canadian author and activist Naomi Klein at a Nov. 10 event sponsored by The Nation magazine in New York City. DemocracyNow.org - Thousands of environmental activists from across the continent plan to gather in Washington, DC, tomorrow to launch a two-week protest against the proposed Keystone XL pipeline that would carry tar sands oil from Alberta, Canada, to US oil refineries Gulf of Mexico. The massive pipeline would cross the Yellowstone River, as well as the Ogallala Aquifer, the largest freshwater aquifer in the United States. Environmentalists plan to hold sit-ins and other acts of civil disobedience outside the White House everyday in order to pressure the Obama administration as it decides whether to approve the pipeline's construction. Supporters of the pipeline say the pipeline will create some 20000 construction jobs, and the company behind it, TransCanada, has already signed agreements to employ the members of four international unions if the project is approved. Last month, the Republican-controlled House passed a measure that would force a decision on the Keystone XL by November 1. As the Obama administration faces industry pressure on one side and sustained grassroots protest on the other, Democracy Now! hosts a debate between Cindy Schild, the Refining Issues Manager at the American Petroleum Institute, and Jane Kleeb, executive director of Bold Nebraska, a group taking part in the Washington protests. Bennett Levin's E8's high-tail under the wires eastbound towards Philadelphia, as regular Keystone Service trains scream past anywhere from 70 to 100 MPH! And like always, a horse-and-buggy makes its way into the scene. August 08, 2011. First up is train 652 flying over the Leaman Crossovers with AEM-7 936 on the point. Following on its tail is 806, the Juniata Terminal Special, with the E8A's 5711 and 5809! 647 flies through the Leaman Crossovers being pushed by AEM-7 946. It's pretty obvious that train 654 is heading through Bird-in-Hand with the billboard in the foreground. The trains don't go as fast as Leaman here because of the sharp banked curve. AEM-7 952 leads east. After missing 649 while visiting the Kitchen Kettle Village shops in Intercourse, the next train would be 656 eastbound. With the sun at a terrible blazing angle, it was best to film this train going away through the 59.2 signals at the Irishtown Road Crossing, and the pushing AEM-7 921 worked in favor of the shot. Horse and buggies pass by here hourly, and one came right after the train passed. Just before 651 came west, an NS local had snuck across Amtrak at the CORK interlocking and unto the New Holland Secondary. But we waited at Bird-in-Hand right at Milepost 61 for 651 because we knew the lighting would be fantastic. AEM-7 916 leads west. Afterwards, we found the NS train, which has symbol H28 or HV28 symbol (the crew only said "28"), was already breaking down the train in Leacock to start work <b>...</b>

In the meantime (like 20 years) someone else in America or Canada wants the pipeline available to transport oil to the tax-free zone. The pipelineisn't about tar sands it's about tax evasion. Yes, the BP oil rig certainly comes to mind, but that was human error and not the fault of technology. ... In a Department of Energy report evaluating Keystone XL's impacts on US energy supply over the next twenty years, the agency found that it will take decades for Canada to produce enough oil to fill existing pipelines. On page 90, the report concludes that the United States will import the same amount of crude from Canada through 2030 whether or not Keystone XL is built. Among the list of jobs that would be created by Keystone pipeline: 51 dancers and choreographers, 138 dentists, 176 dental hygienists, 100 librarians, 510 bread bakers, 448 clergy, 154 stenographers, 865 hairdressers, 136 manicurists, 110 shampooers, 65 farmers, and (our favorite) 1714 bartenders.
