WP Low Thia Khiang Leading the National Pledge

The final rally of the election sees the charismatic WP Low Thia Khiang leading the huge crowd in the stadium with a Chinese version of the National Pledge (after Sylvia Lim had led the English recital). Patriotic feelings run asunder as for once the common man in the streets finally felt that their voice could be part of a huge turning point in Singapore's history. This view was from the block of estates opposite the stadium, and the real amount of the crowd is not reflected accurately as there were a considerable number in the seats of the stadium, in the public carpark surrounding the stadium, as well as those who were denied access due to the stadium having reached maximum capacity. People have the power.

GE: Low Thia Khiang's move decided "long ago" - 27Apr2011

GE: Low Thia Khiang's move decided "long ago" By Teo Xuanwei, TODAY | Posted: 27 April 2011 2124 hrs Low Thia Khiang, WP Photos 1 of 1 Low Thia Khiang, WP Related News • GE: WP's Low Thia Khiang contests in Aljunied GRC Special Report • Vote 2011 SINGAPORE: Workers' Party (WP) chief Low Thia Khiang said his "calculated decision" to move out of Hougang Single-Member Constituency (SMC) had been made "quite long ago" because he felt the opposition as a whole had not progressed in the time that he has been an elected member. The gerrymandering of the People's Action Party (PAP) - shifting voters out of Hougang into other constituencies like Ang Mo Kio Group Representation Constituency (GRC) - made him even more determined that moving out of his ward was the right decision, he said. He said he is leaving the decision of how Singaporeans want the Republic's political system to develop in the hands of voters by presenting what he calls "a team to break through Aljunied" - including party chair Sylvia Lim, prize catch Chen Show Mao, as well as Pritam Singh and Muhamad Faisal Manap - to contest Foreign Affairs Minister George Yeo's team. Using a Mandarin proverb to describe how he feels about facing Mr Yeo and his team, Mr Low said: "We know there is a tiger in the mountain but we are moving towards it and taking it head on. Thats the spirit of the WP." He added that he feels the ground in Aljunied is sweet and is confident of the bid, but declined to speculate on the results. He ...

Budget Speech 2011 by Mr Low Thia Khiang

wp.sg MP for Hougang Low Thia Khiang urges the government to do more to reduce the rising cost of living and the burden of supporting a family in Singapore by cutting GST and Foreign Domestic Worker (FDW) Levy because hiring a domestic helper is no longer a luxury but a necessity. In the spirit of Singaporeans first, he called on the government to disclose more statistics to let Singaporeans know more jobs did go to them in 2010 and more are reserved for them in the next decade. Another urgent issue raised was the need to start working on reversing our low fertility rate urgently in light of most of the efforts initiated by the government has failed so far. It is also counterproductive that the government is taking the easy way out to boost our population by importing foreigners.

Low Thia Khiang reply DPM Teo on Opp Party Can't Deliver - 08Apr2011

SINGAPORE: Secretary-General of the Workers' Party Low Thia Khiang has said again that his party is not ready to form an alternative government. In an interview with Channel NewsAsia, he also clarified his stand on why he thinks Singapore needs an "insurance policy" in the form of more elected opposition members from his party, in case the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) fails. Mr Low is currently one of two opposition Members of Parliament. Even with the addition of Non-Constituency MP Sylvia Lim from his Workers' Party, Mr Low said it is not enough as an "insurance" for Singaporeans. On Thursday, PAP's Second Assistant Secretary-General Teo Chee Hean had challenged that stand, saying the Workers' Party was asking Singaporeans to pay a premium when it is not ready with an alternative plan. Mr Teo, who is also the Deputy Prime Minister, also questioned the WP for making the claim when it said it is not ready to form an alternative government yet. Mr Low said: "We are not saying vote us in to form an alternative government. We are saying as a start, Singaporeans have to insure themselves by voting WP into parliament, to start the process of looking at the possibility of forming an alternative government in the future. We are not even starting yet. "If we want to be first-world nation, you must at the same time, in tandem, move towards a first-world parliament to provide the kind of safeguard and protection against failure of the government and to protect the rights and ...

Low Thia Khiang rebuttal to the PA's claims - 24Aug2011

SINGAPORE: The Workers' Party has welcomed the decision by the People's Association to lift the restriction imposed on the guest list of permit applicants for PA sites leased from the HDB. In a statement, Hougang MP Yaw Shin Leong, who is also Vice-Chairman of Aljunied-Hougang Town Council (AHTC), said that Hougang Town Council, and later AHTC, never placed any restrictions on the guest list of permit applicants. "This is not a `new position' as claimed by the PA, and is self-evident from the presence of PAP grassroots advisors at events held on town council-managed land in Hougang over the last 20 years and in Aljunied GRC after the General Elections," Mr Yaw said. Mr Yaw said two of the incidents cited by the PA took place before August 1, when the Workers' Party took over the town council. He said at the time, the former Managing Agent was solely in charge, and that the open invitation policy remained in place. He added that since it took charge, AHTC has only received two applications from Residents' Committees from Bedok Reservoir Division, and has approved of both of them. In addition, the town council did not receive any other applications prior to August 19. Neither were there calls made by the PA or RCs for enquiries. Mr Yaw also said the joint statement by the HDB and the PA showed that "HDB's decision was indeed precipitated by the General Election results in Aljunied GRC and the desire to secure key sites for PA activities at which grassroots advisors would be ...

''My own feelings on this fundamental democractic principle, of only having elected members of parliament in this house, is too strong to be compromised. I can not support this motion.'' - Dr Tan Cheng Bock, Singapore Parliament Session (29 May 1992) Despite the party whip in place, Dr Tan (Cheng Bock) voted against the NMP scheme, on grounds that political office holders should earn their mandate from the people, a principle he holds dear till today. Note: Mr Low Thia Khiang of the Workers' Party (WP) & Mr Cham See Tong of the Singapore Democatic Party (SDP) can be seen clapping to show support of Dr Tan Cheng Bock's speech. Low Thia Khiang 1st meet-the-people session for Aljunied GRC - 25May2011

SINGAPORE : Workers' Party secretary-general, Low Thia Khiang, has said it may be one or two months before the handover of Aljunied Town Council is completed. Mr Low was speaking at the start of his first meet-the-people session at his division of Bedok Reservoir-Punggol of the Aljunied GRC. It is his first in a new constituency, after 20 years as MP of Hougang, and he promised to do his best for the residents. When Mr Low arrived just after 7.30pm on Wednesday, a large crowd had already gathered - some just there to say hello. The Workers' Party will merge Aljunied and Hougang town councils, and the new entity will be chaired by party chairman Sylvia Lim. Mr Low said existing staff will have priority if they wish to stay on, but the town council will also be hiring new staff. He added that he will work with grassroots organisations (GROs) under the People's Association. Mr Low said: "I've worked with the GROs in Hougang, so whoever will be the advisor, whether it's an ex-MP or potential MP, I have no issues. As long as they're prepared to work for the benefit of residents, I'm prepared to work (with them)." The new town councils will be gazetted on Friday, but Mr Low said it will be one or two months before the Workers' Party MPs can take over the operations of Aljunied Town Council. Some of the outstanding issues include completing an audit of accounts, as well as sorting out contracts with existing vendors.
