This video shows how I taught Kili, my Senegal Parrot, to do the ring on peg trick by color. So not only does Kili put the ring on the peg (which is the mechanical part of the trick) but she also picks the correct peg by matching the color of the ring to the color of the peg. One smart Senegal Parrot! First, the Senegal Parrot puts 4 rings on their respective pegs by color (orange, pink, blue, and purple). The I have her fly to pick up each ring off the floor, fly onto the table, and then coordinate the color of the ring to the correct peg. I go through the flighted ring on peg trick twice in full to show that she really knows the trick. The first time through is cut up to save time but by the end of the session she was doing the trick so well and promptly that I left the last run through the trick completely uncut so that you could see that she really does the trick for real (no fancy cut/splicing, etc). Also, I tried to give her the rings in a random order and the pegs are lined in random order for each trick to demonstrate that she really knows the colors rather than just remembering the order to put the rings on or something. Teaching the tricks is relatively simple but requires a lot of time and patience. In this video, I caught my Senegal Parrot and Budgie falling asleep. This video is for people who would like to know what a sleeping bird looks like. It is very difficult to capture or even see this without disturbing the bird and waking up. Sometimes they sleep with one eye open to keep a watch out for predators while they rest their other half. You can see that my parrot fluffs up to keep warm. She sleeps on one leg to conserve body heat (because the legs lose heat quickest) and she squats low over the other foot to keep it tucked under feathers. Finally she turns her head around 180 and tucks her beak under some feathers to keep it warm as well. It was a drowsy mid-afternoon and everyone was falling asleep. I have seen the parakeet sleep on one foot but have never caught him turning his head back. I know that I have had my birds a few months before ever catching a glimpse of them sleeping. Normally they either sleep when the cage is covered at night or in the afternoon when things are quiet and no one is around. If they are sleeping when I walk into the room, they wake up as I open the door. The only way to really catch them sleeping is if they sit out on their playpens for a long while and nothing is happening. They like to take midday naps and especially if the pressure is dropping prior to rain. Truman Cape Parrot How To Teach Train Learn Training Shake Head No Trick Cue Command

Kili my Senegal Parrot is better at playing dead than ever before. It is so believable as she lies motionless on her back for 10 seconds or more. She keeps her head down to the floor and does not move. You could totally believe this is a dead parrot. But when I "release" her she gets back up and receives a treat. You may have seen Kili play dead before in other videos but after doing this trick for about 6 months, she has really mastered playing dead. She used to keep her head up or only put her head down late but now she knows to put it down sooner and not move around. Teaching the bird to play dead (like roll onto her back) was actually the easy part. It only took about a week of active training to get the bird to roll over onto her back but then it took nearly 6 more months to get her to stay still and get the head back to the ground. Well here it is, the finished product, Kili's play dead trick. Kili is of the species Poicephalus Senegalus which is a green and black parrot native to West Africa. I bought a flight harness for Kili and started training her to use it so that by the summer I can start taking her outside again. I actually tried the harness out one time with her before the video and I was totally able to get it on and off of her without training but the problem is she developed a fear/hatred of it as I'm sure many parrots have. So I'm back to square one. I have a parrot, like any other that is deadly afraid of the harness even coming near it. So I am starting over again and making this video series about how I am training Kili to wear a flight harness using positive and negative reinforcement. The video is kind of long and boring so this is really only for parrot owners that want to learn about getting a harness onto their parrot OR parrot owners who have a parrot that is fearful of any new object and want to get the parrot used to that new object.
