The Madness of King George (1994) Part 1

Part 2: www.youtube.com The Madness of King George is a 1994 film directed by Nicholas Hytner and adapted by Alan Bennett from his own play, The Madness of George III. It tells the true story of George III's deteriorating mental health, and his equally declining relationship with his son, the Prince of Wales, particularly focusing on the period around the Regency Crisis of 1788. Modern medicine has suggested that the King's symptoms were the result of acute intermittent porphyria. The film depicts the relatively primitive medical practices of the time and the suppositions that physicians made in their efforts to understand the human body. The King's doctors attempt cures such as blistering and purges. Meanwhile, another of the King's physicians, Dr. Pepys, analyses the King's stool and urine believing that body wastes may contain some clue to the Royal malady. Finally, Lady Pembrooke recommends Dr. Willis, an ex-minister who attempts to cure the insane through behaviour modification. None of the three methods of treatment entirely cures the King; eventually his illness abates. Cast: Nigel Hawthorne as King George III Helen Mirren as Queen Charlotte Ian Holm as Dr. Willis Rupert Graves as Greville Amanda Donohoe as Lady Pembroke Rupert Everett as The Prince of Wales Julian Rhind-Tutt as The Duke of York Julian Wadham as George III's Prime Minister William Pitt the Younger Jim Carter as Whig MP and leader of the opposition Charles James Fox. Death of King George VI

How the death of the late British monarch was captured on a series of archive films. George VI, "Bertie", was not the first in line to the throne, and did not want the role of Monarch. He preferred a quieter life with low profile public service, his nervousness of public profile reflected in his lifelong stammer, which he significantly overcame, thanks to help from speech therapists and the support of his wife Elizabeth. However, he led "us four", the family which stepped into the role of Royal Family, on the abdication of Edward VIII, and within a few years they restored and enhanced beyond expectations the image and respect for the British Royal Family, especially through their visibility as Britain came under attack in World War Two. There is a famous line which summed them up, when the Queen was asked whether the two Princesses, Elizabeth and Margaret, should be evacuated to Canada as invasion seemed imminent, and the Blitz worsened. She replied "The children will not leave without their mother, their mother will not leave without the King, and the King will never leave". The pressure of the role, and its inevitable need to adapt with dignity to a new order at home and abroad after the war took its toll on the health of the shy and withdrawn man. His death followed a long illness from lung cancer but came unexpectedly. It can be seen from this footage that, whatever he was like as a monarch and an individual, the shock and the grief at his death, was genuine among his ...

King George VI

George VI (Albert Frederick Arthur George) was King of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Commonwealth from 11 December 1936 until his death. He was also the last Emperor of India (until 22 June 1948), the last King of Ireland (until 18 April 1949), and the first Head of the Commonwealth. As the second son of King George V, he was not expected to inherit the throne and spent his early life in the shadow of his elder brother, Edward. He served in the Royal Navy during World War I, and after the war took on the usual round of public engagements. He married Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon in 1923, and they had two daughters, Elizabeth (who succeeded him as Queen Elizabeth II) and Margaret. George's elder brother ascended the throne as Edward VIII on the death of their father in 1936. However, less than a year later Edward revealed his desire to marry the American socialite Wallis Simpson. British Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin advised Edward that, for political and religious reasons, he would not be able to remain king if he married Simpson, who was twice divorced. So Edward abdicated in order to marry, and George VI ascended the throne as the third monarch of the House of Windsor. Within 24 hours of his accession the Irish parliament, the Oireachtas, passed the External Relations Act, which essentially removed the power of the monarch in the Irish Free State. Further events greatly altered the position of the monarchy during his reign: three years after his ...

King George V

George V, King of the United Kingdom, the Dominions and Emperor of India came to the throne in 1910 and was devoted to the paramount task of keeping the British Empire together. He was trying to work a compromise to give home rule to Ireland when World War I broke out. During the war he set an example of sacrifice for the country and courage in the face of bombing raids at home and huge losses at the front. His was the last reign to see large expansion of the British Empire as a result of the victory in World War I. It was also at that time he changed the name of the Royal house from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to Windsor. His reign saw the passage of the Statute of Westminster, the first Royal Christmas speech and the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty. He was a dedicated, hard working and committed constitutional monarch. He died in 1936 at the age of 70.

Originally just a small fishing village, Howth with its surrounding rural district is now a busy suburb of Dublin, with a mix of dense residential development and wild hillside, all on the peninsula of Howth Head. The only neighbouring district on land is Sutton, primarily on same peninsula. Howth is also home to one of the oldest occupied buildings in Ireland, Howth Castle. Through the years, Howth has been used for movies such as The Last of the High Kings and Boy Eats Girl. Howth is located on the peninsula of Howth Head, which begins around 13 kilometres east-north-east of Dublin, on the north side of Dublin Bay. The village itself is located 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) from Dublin city centre (the ninth of a series of eighteenth century milestones from the Dublin General Post Office is in the village itself), and spans most of the northern part of Howth Head, which is connected to the rest of Dublin via a narrow strip of land at Sutton Cross.
