Klaatu- Sub-Rosa Subway

"Sub-Rosa Subway", by Klaatu. Lyrics: Back in 1870 Just beneath the Great White Way Alfred Beach worked secretly Risking all to ride a dream His wind machine His wind machine New York City and the morning sun Were awoken by the strangest sound Reportedly as far as Washington The tremors shook the earth As Alfie blew underground Blew underground, he blew underground Ah, all aboard Sub Rosa Subway Had you wondered Who's been digging under Broadway It's Alfred Poor Al, oh no, Al As for America's first subway The public scoffed "It's far too crude" One station filled with Victoria's Age From frescoed walls And goldfish fountains To Brahmsian tunes

Klaatu - Doctor Marvello

Klaatu - Doctor Marvello from the album: 3:47 Est or in other countries know as 'Klaatu' Title of Work: Doctor Marvello (single version) Words By: John Woloschuk Music By: John Woloschuk Lead Vocal: John Woloschuk Backup Vocals: John Woloschuk, Terry Draper and Terry Brown Instrumentation: John: pianos, mellotron, acoustic guitar, bass guitar Dee: synthesizer, electric sitar Recorded At: Toronto Sound Studios Recording Period: January - April 1974 (mixed on 08-Apr-1974) Initial Release Date: July 1974 (Canada only) Remarks: The original title for this song was "Doctor Marvello's Love Machine". The basic rhythm section (consisting of grand piano, drums, and synthesizer) was recorded on January 28, 1974 with Terry Brown producing and Dave Slagter engineering. The piano was later replaced by a "Fender Rhodes" electric piano. The bell-like sounds heard at the beginning of this track were created by blending three separate stereo recordings of wind chimes: one recorded at normal tape speed, one at half-normal speed, and one at twice-normal speed. These were mixed down to a separate piece of 1/4" tape which was then spliced onto the master recording. Similarly, in the instrumental section two separate recordings of acoustic piano were blended: one was recorded at half-normal tape speed, and the other at normal tape speed with the tape running backwards. This single was released by the now defunct GRT Records of Canada. klaatu.org

Klaatu - Dear Christine

Dear Christine by Klaatu Words By: John Woloschuk Music By: John Woloschuk and Dino Tome Lead Vocal: John Woloschuk Backup Vocals: John Woloschuk Instrumentation: John: Piano, organ, bass guitar, acoustic guitar, bells Dee Long: Electric and acoustic guitars Terry Draper: Tambourine, drum overdubs (in fade ending) Recorded At: Sounds Interchange, Toronto Canada Recording Period: November 1977 to May 1978 (mixed in early June 1978) Initial Release Date: August 1978 ("Sir Army Suit" album) Remarks: From Klaatu's inception in January 1973 and continuing on through May 1977, one important factor in making possible the production of the group's recordings had been access to studio time at Toronto Sound Studios made available by producer Terry Brown (who was then part-owner of that studio). But by the autumn of 1977, TSS had ceased operations and was in the process of being dissolved. When recording of Klaatu's third album ("Sir Army Suit") got underway in November 1977, the group was booked into another of Toronto's leading studios, Sounds Interchange, under the pseudonym "The Plastic Mosquitoes". The first song recorded by Klaatu at Sounds Interchange was "Dear Christine". The basic rhythm section (consisting of piano, electric guitar, and drums) was recorded "live" off the floor on November 28, 1977 with Terry Brown producing and Mike Jones engineering. (The "distorted" electric guitar track recorded on that first session was subsequently replaced with a "clean" electric 12 <b>...</b>

Klaatu - So Said the Lighthouse Keeper

So Said the Lighthouse Keeper by Klaatu Words By: John Woloschuk Music By: John Woloschuk Lead Vocal: John Woloschuk with Terry Draper (as lighthouse keeper) Instrumentation: John: Piano, bass, organ, harmonium, synthesizer Dee Long: Electric guitars, acoustic guitar Terry Draper: Drums, percussion Recorded At: Toronto Sound Studios & Olympic Sound Studios Recording Period: October 1976 to April 1977 (mixed in May 1977) Initial Release Date: September 1977 ("Hope" album) Remarks: The basic rhythm section (consisting of grand piano, drums, and electric guitar) was recorded at Toronto Sound Studios on October 25, 1976 with producer Terry Brown engineering. This was the last of the bed tracks to be recorded for the "Hope" album. On January 13, 1977 a 28-piece string and woodwind section was overdubbed onto the 24-track master tape at Olympic Sound Studios (London) with arranger Doug Riley conducting. Later that same day French horns were also recorded onto this track. The fuzz bass in the "heavy" sections was performed on a Rickenbacker 4001 bass. The harmonium used on this track (as well as on "The Loneliest of Creatures") is an authentic pedal harmonium which was recorded inside a small enclosed vocal booth. During February 1977, in order to meet the deadline for delivery of the master tapes to Capitol Records (which was scheduled for later that month), several weeks had to be block booked at Toronto Sound Studios with continuous recording virtually round the clock using <b>...</b>

Klaatu- Woman

"Woman", by Klaatu. This is a rare track that was only released as a single in West Germany, and has never appeared on any Klaatu compilation. This was recorded during Klaatu's brief 1988 reunion, for the television program, "Tatort". Lyrics: Woman Don't stand so close to me I wish I knew the words to say When I look into your eyes, I'd love to think they tell no lies But most of all, I can't get you off my mind Don't stand so close to me I wish I knew the words to say Should I let me feelings show? Should I run away from you? Whatever I do, I can't get you off my mind I'd love to think you need me Woman More than anybody else And then again you scare me so Woman More than anybody else Oh, What's a man supposed to do? Woman Woman Don't stand so close to me I wish I knew the words to say Should I let me feelings show? Should I run away from you? Whatever I do, I can't get you off my mind I'd love to think you need me, woman More than anybody else And then again you scare me so Woman More than anybody else Oh What's a man supposed to do? Please watch this video in High Definition Words By: John Woloschuk Music By: John Woloschuk Lead Vocal: John Woloschuk Backup Vocals: John Woloschuk, Terry Draper, Dee Long, Terry Brown Instrumentation: John: Bass guitar, autoharp, keyboards Dee: Electric and acoustic guitars Terry: Drums, percussion Recorded At: Toronto Sound Studios & Olympic Sound Studios Recording Period: September 1976 to April 1977 (mixed in May 1977) Initial Release Date: September 1977 ("Hope" album) Remarks: Unlike Klaatu's debut album where all the songs had been written well in advance of the recording sessions, many of the songs on Klaatu's second album were still in development (in some cases re-written) during the pre-production and recording phases of that project. This track was one such work-in-progress and initially was filed in Toronto Sound's tape library under the provisional title, "intro to lighthouse keeper". The arpeggiated keyboard part featured on this track was produced by John and Dee "plucking" the strings of a grand piano in sync with a pre-recorded click track as the 24-track tape deck was recording at half-normal tape speed. When played back at normal speed the end result sounded much like a harpsichord. The choir-like voices on this track were created by combining several vocal takes recorded at various non-normal tape speeds. (a similar technique had been used previously for Sir Bodsworth Rugglesby III). The ending section of this track was artificially extended by <b>...</b>

Around the Universe in Eighty Days by Klaatu from their second album Hope Words By: Dee Long Music By: Dee Long Lead Vocal: Dee Long Backup Vocals: Dee Long Instrumentation: Dee: Piano, synthesizer, organ, electric guitar John Woloschuk: Bass guitar (fuzz) Terry Draper: Drums, tambourine, triangle Recorded At: Toronto Sound Studios Recording Period: September 1976 - February 1977 (mixed in May 1977) Initial Release Date: September 1977 ("Hope" album) Remarks: On July 6, 1976 a demo version of this track was recorded at Toronto Sound Studios during the group's rehearsals of new material for the "Hope" album. The basic tracks of this demo recording consisted of two separate takes of Dee playing grand piano. In September 1976 production on the master version of this track commenced with producer Terry Brown engineering. After recording several takes of new piano it was decided that the piano performance on the previously recorded demo was in fact better and consequently the "demo" piano was transferred onto the new master recording. The "space choir" heard at the beginning of this track was created using a separate piece of 24-track tape. Each of several different vocal parts was recorded individually onto separate tracks, and in some cases enhanced with various echoes and delays. The resulting multitude of voices was then mixed down to stereo and transferred ("flown in wild") onto two tracks of the 24-track master recording. The Rickenbacker 4001 bass was patched directly <b>...</b>

We're Off You Know by Klaatu from their second Album Hope Words By: John Woloschuk Lead Vocal: John Woloschuk Instrumentation: John: Electric pianos, bass guitar, synthesizer Dee: Electric guitars, electric sitar, harmonica Terry: Drums, percussion Recorded At: Toronto Sound Studios and Olympic Sound Studios Recording Period: September 1976 to April 1977 (mixed in May 1977) Initial Release Date: September 1977 ("Hope" album) Remarks: In keeping with the nautical theme of this track, producer Terry Brown borrowed an authentic ship's bell from a local yacht club and it was overdubbed onto the 24-track master tape at Toronto Sound Studios in early 1977. The trumpets and flugel horn on this track were performed by Guido Basso, a prominent jazz musician and prolific session player from Toronto. The orchestral strings which can be heard in the opening of this track were recorded at Olympic Sound Studios in London, England in January 1977. All other string parts were recorded at Toronto Sound Studios in February 1977 and were performed by a viola duet.
