Mandala Closing Ceremony - Part I

This is the 1st part of the Mandala Closing Ceremony at Chua Pho Tu in San Leandro, CA. Our temple was blessed with a week-long visit by a Tibetan sangha. These monks that you see in the red are the ones that created this mandala - entirely out of sand! After one week of strenuous art and work, the monks showcased the mandala to our temple, and swiftly destroyed it. Amazing isn't it: such beauty took these monks seven whole days to finish, and yet it only took one monk a minute to destroy it.

Behind the Seams - Part I

This is part I of a 10 minute documentary about teenagers and sweatshops, titled "Behind the Seams". This film was created by six teenagers (that includes me) as a part of a larger two-week peer education project. For two weeks in March, students of Ms. Mac's 2007-08 Social Living Class at Skyline High School in Oakland, CA gave hour-long presentations on the issue of sweatshop labor in the fashion industry. What you see here is the finale of our presentation. For every presentation, we ended it with this final message: that by sheer numbers alone, teenagers as a collective can use their money to initiate awareness of the issue.

Kurt Vonnegut Died!

www.nytimes.com Yes, it is true. Our beloved author Kurt Vonnegut has passed away at the age of 84. According to the New York Times, Vonnegut had been suffering from "irreversible" brain damage from a fall several weeks ago. So it goes. Note: Sorry for the dysphemistic title, it is very late.

Skyline High School - Unity

This video premiered at the opening of Skyline High School's 2007-08 Preview Night Concert in Oakland, CA. It was supposed to highlight this year's theme that the performing arts teachers chose - Unity. In the video, you will see all the major aspects of Skyline's performing arts department at play (no pun intended) as we show what practice is like a couple of weeks before the concert and count down the days leading up to it: music, dance, technical theater, voice, drama, and featuring this year - film! So sit back, kick your legs up on the sofa, and watch as Skyline's students astound you and empower you with what we can do...all through watching our film. ---- Note: I must say the concert on October 3, 2007 was electrifying. In all my years devoted to performing arts at Skyline, I have never felt a larger sense of community and empowerment as I had that night. It was inspirational, especially with the whole collaborative arrangement of "Unity" that all of us students did at the end...oh, and let's not forget the bit at the end where we all pumped our fist into the air. ---- Music performed by the O'Jays Arranged by Ted Allen
Hanging On

This film short was my final for my film class at Skyline High School. For this film, I decided not to direct, but to be the editor, and boy did I learn so much about the power of editing. I realized that, were it not for great editors, films would look like crap. Moreover, I learned that the next time I watch a good feature film I should really give more credit to editors for doing such a wonderful job. This film was shot in Oakland, CA at Skyline High School's theater for about three days. Editing was done in two days, just in time for the semester's end. You really gotta love adolescent procrastination. And yes, for the ending, I was inspired by Alfred Hitchcock. --------------------------- Directed By: Cormac F. Edited By: Klein L .(me)
