Video: NATO troops shot, wounded in violent Kosovo clashes

A German NATO officer and a soldier were shot and wounded in clashes with Serbs in northern Kosovo on Monday after the military alliance's troops used heavy machinery to remove trucks and buses blocking a main road in the tense region, an official said. German and Austrian peacekeepers involved in Monday's operation fired rubber bullets and tear gas and used water canon and pepper spray to disperse the crowd of Serb protesters trying to stop the soldiers from removing a roadblock. The clashes took place at Jagnjenica, some 60 km (40 miles) northwest of Pristina. They follow months of tensions, following a decision by Kosovo's authorities to extend their authority in the areas under de-facto Serb rule. RT on Twitter twitter.com RT on Facebook www.facebook.com

'Impossible to build border between Kosovo & Serbia'

RT spoke to Borislav Stefanovic, Serbia's chief negotiator on how to end what is being called a test of nerves in northern Kosovo. He believes it is impossible to resolve the situation the way Pristina intends to. "There's an attempt to create a border between Serbia and Kosovo. There cannot be a border, especially in an area in which we have a majority of Serbs living. There cannot be a border because it is an administrative line," he said. "The second thing is that once you put customs officers, then you put a flag, then you will put a coat of arms, then you will put so-called 'Kosovo laws,' and then people who live here will be circled by something that looks like the Kosovo state," Stefanovic went on to explain. Serbs cannot accept such a scenario, the diplomat says, and therefore a different solution has to be found. "We hope for an outcome where we will have a regulation of the flow of goods in the north, but that regulation is status neutral, without Kosovan customs, and then we can move on on finding and managing the revenue share and what laws will be implied," Borislav Stefanovic proposed. Trouble flared in July when Kosovan police tried to take over two northern border crossings -- a move which was resisted by local Serbs who blockaded access roads. NATO and EU forces then moved in to try and establish control. Late last month, some barricades were bulldozed, resulting in violence, with peacekeepers using rubber bullets and tear gas against the Serbs. RT on ...

Kosovo: Violent Clashes Between NATO's KFOR and Serbian Minority

Tensions run high on Serbia's border with northern Kosovo, as neither of the conflicting sides is prepared to rule out a further escalation of violence. Local Serbs say NATO forces are to blame, for breaking an agreement by trying to remove a barricade blocking the way to one of a number of disputed checkpoints. The move prompted violent clashes that left dozens injured on both sides. Last night in Northern Kosovo passed without violence though this does not mean that the source of tensions has disappeared. On November 23 the NATO's KFOR forces attempted to remove a barricade put up by ethnic Serbian minority of the region. The resistance was tense so the soldiers used tear gas. More than 20 people were injured but the Serbs got it their way and the KFOR operation was ceased. RT crew traveled around the area and saw the barricades that have been there for the last four months still up. They are constantly maintained and people there say they are not going to abandon them in any case and in fact are planning to build more of them. To an untrained eye those barricades seem to be mere piles of rubble, amateurishly constructed. One would never say they could become a cause of armed conflict. But in order to comprehend why the barricades appeared in the first place, the developments in July in Kosovo must be remembered. The Serbian minority, that constitutes 10 per cent of the Kosovo population, lost any kind of legal status once Kosovo unilaterally proclaimed independence ...

More Violence in Kosovo: NATO Tells Troops to Use Live Ammunition

At least two Kosovan Serbs and two NATO peacekeepers were injured in a fresh wave of violence in northern Kosovo, casting doubts on whether the conflict could be resolved in the near future. The skirmishes occurred near the town of Zubin Potok, where Serbs were protesting NATO's attempts to remove a barricade made of buses and trucks that was blocking a main road in the region. NATO peacekeeping troops responded by firing rubber bullets, tear gas and water cannons at the demonstrators. They also used pepper spray and batons against the protesters, while the latter hit the NATO peacekeepers with clubs and pelted them with rocks. NATO has been claiming the two injured peacekeepers were under fire from the Serb demonstrators and is now instructing its soldiers to fire live ammunition if they come under attack. Violence between Kosovan Serbs and NATO troops and Kosovan police flared up this summer after the self-proclaimed Kosovo government sought to set up customs and border posts in the north of the country, where Serbs, although overall a minority, make up a majority. The Serb population responded by burning one of the posts and attacking Kosovan police. NATO troops were then called in, but Serbs began setting up barricades made of mud, soil, rock and concrete barriers to block the main road arteries leading to the border. This led to several skirmishes over the past months involving NATO peacekeepers and Kosovan Serbs. Just last week more than 20 Portuguese and Hungarian ...

Kosovo steps up lobby for EU membership after Serbia customs deal

Kosovo is stepping up its lobby to start talks about membership of the European Union after it reach breakthrough in its customs dispute with Serbia. Its president came to Brussels for the first time last week for high-level talks with officials at all key European institutions. Greece, Spain and Serbia are some of the countries that dont recognize Kosovo as an independent state. Kosovo is still seeing interethnic violence, even as recent as a month ago, with clashes at the Kosovo-Serbian border. It's clear that much needs to be done before it's possible to speak about a normalized situation. But Kosovo's President feels it's destined to join the union. The European parliament remains concerned about continued evidence of corruption in Pristina and its surroundings. Council President Herman van Rompuy said he was pleased to see 'a European solution,' to a trade dispute with Serbia, reaching an agreement over customs stamps. Van Rompuy urged the president of Kosovo to make further progress to uphold the rule of law and fight organised crime and corruption in order to "steadily bring Kosovo closer to the EU". Kosovo, as a generally ethnic Albanian region, declared independence from Serbia in 2008. Serbs living in Kosovo, most Christian orthodox, continue to complain about harsh discrimination by the mostly Muslim Albanian majority.

The Alliance's representative in Kosovo, Kai Gudenoge, said Serb protesters threw pipe bombs at troops stationed along the border between Serbia and Kosovo. One soldier had to be evacuated for treatment due to the gravity of his injuries. Three others are being treated locally. BUY ON DVD: www.kosovo-film.com Director's fan page: www.facebook.com Kosovo: Can You Imagine? (Serbian: Косово: Можете ли замислити?) is a documentary film by Canadian filmmaker Boris Malagurski, about the Serbs that live in Kosovo and the lack of human rights that they have today, in the 21st century. Most of the Kosovo Serbs have been ethnically cleansed by the Albanians who make up the majority of Kosovo. Kosovo has been under UN administration since 1999 when NATO bombed Serbia for 78 days to halt a crackdown on ethnic Albanian separatism in its province of Kosovo. In the years following the war, thousands of Serbs were expelled from their homes, kidnapped and killed. Their houses, cultural and religious sites were burned and destroyed. Kosovo for the Serbs is what Jerusalem is for the Jewish people. It is the cradle of their statehood, culture and religion. Most of the important Serbian Christian Orthodox monasteries are in Kosovo. Today, Serbs still have a deep spiritual and traditional connection to Kosovo, a land which is being cleansed of everything Serbian. Most of the Kosovo Serbs are internally displaced, some of them live in small containter camps, in ghettos, all this in the heart of Europe in the 21st century. We follow the stories of several Serbs who have fell victim to a nationalist and irredentist ideology that has a goal of creating a pure Albanian state of "Kosova" ("Kosovo" in Albanian) Serbs in Kosovo have no basic human rights.
