Leo Kottke - Taxco Steps

"This was also written in Mexico. Outside of Cuernavaca, there's a town called Taxco [pronounced "TAS-koh"] and it's more or less on top of a [audience member says something] -- which? -- it's on top of a mountain, many steps, if you want to be cool, to get there. And I've walked these steps. And when I got there -- this was on a weekend -- I entered the city square and fell asleep, as a result of this walk, on a park bench. And I was awakened, I don't know how much time had elapsed, but I was awakened by a little boy who was beating me in the face with a rolled-up newspaper. He was a totally corrupted evil child and he was delighted with himself. He was one of the happiest people I've seen in a while. So naturally I burst into song and this is called Taxco Steps. www.guitarmusic.org"

Leo Kottke 2011 Summer Workshop: "Flattop," "Big Situation," "Corrina, Corrina"

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee will offer a special workshop on the music of guitarist/composer Leo Kottke, which will bring together unparalleled resources for the study of three of his compositions. This workshop will be held in Kenilworth Square East, the elegant satellite facility of the Peck School of the Arts. I will teach this class with the assistance of Benjamin Kammin, Andrew Lardner, and Joshua Lane, who bring specialized background and depth to this workshop. If you have an interest in learning the music of Leo Kottke, I hope that you will join us. Using extensively-edited written music, specifically designed pedagogical materials, and video, you should be on a straight path to understanding the technique and music of Leo Kottke. I don't expect that you will actually be able to perform these three compositions on the last day of the class, but I hope that you will have a comprehensive understanding to take with you—along with the music. Transcriptions will be released on July 20 specifically for this class. Students should have at least intermediate facility on the guitar and be able to read tablature. Maximum enrollment: 45. If you're coming in from the great beyond, a residential option in the new Kenilworth Square Apartments is available. registration www4.uwm.edu 1. Leo Kottke's Cradle to the Grave

Leo Kottke single from his Greenhouse album, Cradle to the Grave. MP3 contributed by NunzOnDrugs of Youtube. Lyrics: Feeling like a ship out of the ocean About to go aground on desert sands Feeling like an eagle losing motion Tired of flying, ain't no where to land Everyday's all the same Same old ways, never change Going from the cradle to the grave I don't think I've ever felt so helpless Always feeling like my hands are tied Failure at most everything I've dealt with Ruining most everything I've tried Everyday's all the same Same old ways, never change Going from the cradle to the grave And every day's all the same Same always, never change Going from the cradle to the grave Running from my life at every moment Never having time to catch my breath Sometimes I wish this crazy race were over The thought of living scares me half to death And every day's all the same Same always, never change Going from the cradle to the grave
Medley: "Easter"/"Vaseline Machine Gun" by Leo Kottke

These two pieces are written by Leo Kottke who is one of my favorite guitar players. I chose to do them in a medley because after I play "Easter and the Sargasso Sea" a very slow ballad, I rip into "Vaseline Machine Gun" and it pretty much melts faces. Whats going through my mind when I play "Easter" is the flow of water in a thunderstorm, and when I start playing "Vaseline Machine Gun" I feel like I have landed somewhere very fast paced, perhaps a bazaar and I'm trying to barter with a guy who won't budge on his prices.
