English and Czech subtitles. Bláznova kronika (The Jester's Tale) is a 1964 Czech film directed by Karel Zeman. A visually experimental film that combines engravings with film montage, which Karel Zeman sticks into the whirlwind of the Thirty Years' War. The protagonists are a new conscript, the plowman Petr, and the experienced soldier Matěj. These two are thrown together by an accident and so they pull together through both well-known and forgotten battlefields of the Thirty Years' War but also through the love adventures of each of them.

A historical adventure of Karel Zeman set to Moravia in 1625, at the beginning of the Thirty Years' War. Young peasant Petr is captured by a press-gang of duke Mansfeld, and forced to serve in his protestant army against the Austrian Emperor. After a bloody battle, Petr and his friend, old soldier Matěj, are the only survivors left on the battlefield. While Matěj uses this opportunity to steal gold and money from Mansfeld's vacated camp, Petr's only dream is to return home as quick as possible. But then he encounters beautiful girl Lenka and things start to get complicated...
