Anathema - in the studio recording Weather Systems

Footage of the band recording Weather Systems with Christer-André Cederberg at Parr Street Studios in Liverpool. Weather Systems is the follow-up 2010's We're Here Because We're Here. That album featured prominently in numerous end-of-year polls and the producer, Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree), has described it as 'definitely among the best albums I've ever had the pleasure to work on.' The bar for Weather Systems has been set pretty high then but Daniel Cavanagh from the band is certain that the album will exceed these lofty expectations, 'it feels like we are at a creative peak right now, and this album reflects that. Everything from the production to the writing to the performances are a step up from our last album.' He continues, 'This is not background music for parties. The music is written to deeply move the listener, to uplift or take the listener to the coldest depths of the soul.' The intertwining melodic structures, the profoundly beautiful and intensely powerful - yet simple - songs will transport the listener closer to the heart of life, that is to say, to the heart of themselves. It is also an album of polarity. The play of opposites; light and shade, birth and death, love and fear. The simple truths of life and loss, hope and strength and darker internal themes are all explored here. The album was recorded in Liverpool, North Wales and Oslo, each place significant to Anathema past, present and future. The record was produced and mixed by 5 times Norwegian ...

North Atlantic Oscillation - Ceiling Poem (from Grappling Hooks)

Grappling Hooks, the debut album from North Atlantic Oscillation, was released earlier this year on Kscope. The record immediately received rave reviews across the board, including being named Zane Lowes record of the week, and their first UK headline tour confirmed their status as one of the most exciting new bands to emerge in 2010. The band return in June with Ceiling Poem, the second single to be lifted from the album. The track was described as a gentle dreambeat that explodes into a technicolour psych-out by Classic Rock and by The Quietus as inverted, unexpectedly Byrds-inflected folktronica. They will also be embarking on a short UK tour in May ahead of festival appearances this summer. For more information, audio samples, videos, downloads and more, go to the mini-site at kscopemusic.com/northatlanticoscillation The band have been described as prog-pop and electro-rock, but really they just make music. The music has soaring harmonies and loud guitars and dreamy synths and heavy drums and strange effects and unexpected changes-of-mind. NAO are the Scottish based trio of Sam Healy (vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards, synths, sax, percussion), Ben Martin (drums, percussion, programming) and Bill Walsh (bass, synth bass, vocals). They describe themselves as playing their instruments within a computerised wall of sound. Grappling Hooks is a subtle yet powerful kaleidoscope of purring electronics, atmospheric layers and hook-laden melodies. Preceded by single Drawing Maps ...

Steven Wilson - Track One (from Grace for Drowning)

Lasse Hoile's new video for Track One, taken from Steven Wilson's second solo album Grace for Drowning. Grace For Drowning' is the second album released under Wilson's own name, and builds on the artistic inroads he forged with 2009's exceptionally well-received 'Insurgentes.' A double album ('two 40-45 minute albums in the same package') Wilson has described it as "my biggest project to date". He continues, "'Insurgentes' was an important step for me into something new. This record takes that as a starting point, but it's more experimental and more eclectic. For me the golden period for music was the late sixties and early seventies, when the album became the primary means of artistic expression, when musicians liberated themselves from the 3 minute pop song format, and started to draw on jazz and classical music especially, combining it with the spirit of psychedelia to create "journeys in sound" I guess you could call them. So without being retro, my album is a kind of homage to that spirit. There's everything from [Ennio] Morricone-esque film themes to choral music to piano ballads to a 23 minute progressive jazz--inspired piece. I've actually used a few jazz musicians this time, which is something I picked up from my work remixing the King Crimson records." The full tracklist is as follows; CD1: 1. Grace For Drowning (2.00) 2. Sectarian (8.00) 3. Deform to Form a Star (8.00) 4. No Part of Me (5.45) 5. Postcard (4.30) 6. Raider Prelude (2.30) 7. Remainder the Black ...

Ulver - The Norwegian National Opera (DVD / Blu-ray trailer)

Press Release for The Norwegian National Opera (DVD & Blu-ray) Stunning concert from the dark music legends -- captured live in high definition in Oslo Ulver returned earlier this year with their new album Wars Of The Roses. Early pioneers of Norwegian black metal, the band have continually evolved throughout their career and now stand as living legends of the dark music industry, blending rock, electronica, symphonic and chamber traditions along with noise and experimental music to create ground- breaking material. Until recently however the band had remained exclusively within the studio. This changed in May 2009 when the band accepted an invitation to appear at the Norwegian Festival Of Literature. The success of this gig lead to them embarking on a string of other gigs in 2009 and 2010, selling out prestigious venues such as the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, Volksbühne in Berlin and La Cigale in Paris before they returned to their homeland for this landmark gig at The Norwegian Opera House. The 2 hour concert married tracks from throughout the band's catalogue to stunning visuals to create a spectacle fitting for such a grand venue. The evening was captured on 6 HD cameras and the audio has been mixed for this release in the band's own Crystal Canyon Studios. Someone Here is Missing is: A record of dark edges, full of love and regret, my life in the last eighteen months pretty much, according to singer/songwriter Bruce Soord. It also happens to be their best yet. With 2008s acclaimed Tightly Unwound album which launched the renowned Kscope label the band suddenly found themselves celebrated at both home and abroad. Anathema - Kingdom (from Falling Deeper)

Recent graduate Laurence Dawes has used Falling Deeper's version of classic track 'Kingdom' on his final film project at Brunel University. 'Below' is a short 3D animation about a man who after believing what he reads in the headlines about swine flu descends underground in an attempt to escape what he perceives as his impending doom. The film is based around a single character who is obsessed with news. His house is littered with newspapers and television sets showing rolling news channels constantly. He has become so obsessed with the news that he can no longer see through the headlines and takes everything seriously. Upon hearing of swine flu he is convinced it will finally wipe out the human race and so descends into a bunker beneath his house where he stays for years, isolated and cut off from the world, convinced that the flu will ravish the human race as the headlines have proclaimed. laurencedawes.co.uk For more info, downloads and audio samples from Falling Deeper, go to: kscopemusic.com/anathema Buy Anathema albums from: burningshed.com/store/kscope/collection/222/ anathema.ws

As part of the Insurgentes film project (see www.insurgentes.org), Steven Wilson has been testing various ways to destroy an iPod. Every week from the start of February until the release of the album we shall be posting snippets of the film here, showing a different method of destruction ranging from hammers to shotguns to woodchippers. "My fear is that the current generation of kids who're being born into this information revolution, growing up with the Internet, cell phones, iPods, this download culture, 'American Idol,' reality TV, prescription drugs, PlayStations — all of these things kind of distract people from what's important about life, which is to develop a sense of curiosity about what's out there. Ulver - Norwegian Gothic (taken from Wars of the Roses)

Visuals for 'Norwegian Gothic', taken from the live shows, directed and composed by Kristin Bøyesen. Wars of the Roses, the latest album from Ulver was released on Kscope earlier this year. The album has been hailed by Metal Hammer as "an approachable and engaging introduction to a most unorthodox and enigmatic band". Kscope are very proud to announce that Ulver are the latest band to join their roster. Early pioneers of Norwegian black metal, the band have continually evolved throughout their career and now stand as living legends of the dark music industry. Thematically, the same is at stake as always with Ulver: the human condition and a world in fall. But this time the landscape is viewed from a bird's eye perspective, exposing culture and tradition rather than the personal vulnerability expressed on previous albums. In the words of Julian Cope: «Ulver are cataloguing the death of our culture two decades before anyone else has noticed its inevitable demise.» Wars Of The Roses was mixed by producer extraordinaire John Fryer (Depeche Mode, Cocteau Twins, Swans etc.), following a chance meeting outside Crystal Canyon studios during the latter stages of recording. Sounds like fate.
