Bride Kidnapping - Kyrgyzstan

3/4 Kyrgyz brides betrothed through kidnapping To see more go to www.youtube.com Follow us on Facebook (goo.gl or Twitter (www.twitter.com Follow us on a curious adventure to Kyrgystan, where bride kidnapping is a proud tradition. As women struggle to preserve their autonomy, the controversial practice is seeing a surge in popularity. A young woman is washing her hands under a water pump when three men surround her from behind. They reach out and grab her. She screams, kicks, struggles and cries as her future husband watches on. This is romance Kyrgyz style. "When we met for the first time he asked me, should I send my parents or should I just kidnap you? I replied, don't do it, I have a boyfriend." But reluctance on the bride's side is no obstacle. "The second time we met, they just kidnapped me", the woman tells us as she sits next to the man that is now her husband. This is no fringe tradition: the majority of marriages in rural Kyrgyz areas result from it. In many instances it is decided between both families and the girl may even know.Technically illegal, degrading and often violent, it isn't usually a recipe for happily ever after. Unsurprisingly, "spousal abuse is higher in kidnap marriages. The divorce rate is higher in kidnap marriages." January 2012

Kyrgyz Islam: Embracing the future or breeding radicals?

The Central Asian republic of Kyrgyzstan has its own unique brand of Islam. Now, it has opened its doors to more fundamentalist strains of the religion. But will it help defuse social tensions, or lead to radicalization and the erosion of freedoms? The spectacle of tens of thousands of Kyrgyz men praying in the capital's central square, just underneath the Vladimir Lenin monument, says much about Kyrgyzstan. Even in its heyday, Communist ideology was never able to mobilize as many people as Islam does nowadays. But the unity of Muslims at prayer masks the vast differences in theology and lifestyle that exist among various branches of Islam in Kyrgyzstan. Over the past decade, the country has become a testing ground for Islamic missionaries of all kinds. Some of them have less in common with each other than they do with Jews or Christians. Kyrgyz people converted to Islam in the 17th century but they were never over-zealous about their faith. Mixed with shamanism and nomadic customs, the Kyrgyz version of Islam has long been more of a moral code than a religious doctrine. It has helped shape a society where women are just as active and ambitious as men, and where religiosity went hand in hand with a good education. Now, though, that is starting to change. "After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Kyrgyzstan has seen a very fast growth of Islam. Some of it is domestically driven -- poverty, poor education, corruption, mistrust of authorities -- all of that is prodding people <b>...</b>

Bride Kidnapping in Kyrgyzstan 1 of 5 - VICE News

In the Issyk-Kul region of Kyrgyzstan, tradition is king. Polo's still played with a freshly killed goat and the men still marry their women the old-fashioned way: by abducting them off the street and forcing them to be their wife. Bride kidnapping is a supposedly ancient custom that's made a major comeback since the fall of Communism and now accounts for nearly half of all marriages in some parts. We traveled to the Kyrgyz countryside to follow/aid and abet a young groom named Kubanti as he surprised his teenage girlfriend Nazgul with the gift of marriage/kidnapping. The protesters clashed with police, stormed government buildings, and set the district administration offices on fire. Goodbye Kyrgyz Lenin!

16th August 2003. Ala-Too Square, Bishkek. Kyrgyz Republic. Twelve years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Kyrgyz authorities order the removal of that familiar symbol of Soviet power, an iron statue of Bolshevik founding father Vladimir Ilyich Lenin. New Kyrgyz president wants US base out - RussiaToday (Dec 2, 2011)

Newly-elected Kyrgyz President Atambayev says he will shut down the key US military base in the country. Former President Bakiyev wanted to do the same, but changed his mind a year before a major uprising ousted him from power. The Manas Airbase was opened in Kyrgyzstan in 2001, after the US-led coalition invaded Afghanistan and the need to supply the contingent with fuel, weapons and manpower arose. According to Pentagon reports, 15000 troops and 500 tonnes of military cargo pass through the base every month. Some 1200 of personnel are stationed there. However Manas has become the focus of controversy over the decade of its existence. On several occasions Kyrgyz police investigated crimes allegedly committed by Americans, but could not prosecute them because US troops stationed abroad are legally immune. The local population also complains that the transport planes coming to and from the airport cause much damage to the environment, reports RT's Oksana Boyko. "I watch the US planes come and go several times a day. I know their schedule. The noise is disturbing, but I sort of got used to it. What's really bad is that they are killing nature, the fields and the crops. And people's health is getting worse too," a local resident told RT. Yet another concern us that America's enemies -- which there seem to be plenty of -- could target Kyrgyzstan for its hosting the Manas base. Then-President Kurmanbek Bakiyev tried to shut down the base in 2009. The corresponding law passed <b>...</b>

Genocide of Uzbeks in Kyrgyzstan

The 2010 Kyrgyz revolution began in April 2010 with the ousting of Kyrgyz president Kurmanbek Bakiyev. It was followed by increased ethnic tension involving the Kyrgyz and Uzbeks in the south of the country, which escalated in June 2010. The killings of Uzbeks in the riots have been called "genocide" and "ethnic cleansing" by the UN and international media. The Uzbek minority was targeted by assailants of the Kyrgyz ethnicity, as evidenced by survivors and field reports of the media. Approximately 100000 Uzbeks -- mainly women, elder people and children fleeing the violence -- found refuge in Uzbekistan and some 400000 became internally displaced. Victims interviewed by media and aid workers testify to mass killing, gang rape and torture. Then-head of the Interim government Roza Otunbayeva indicated that the death toll is tenfold higher than was previously reported, which brings the number of the dead to 2000 people. **Source: Wikipedia Central Asia Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization formed to support people of Central Asia. Kırgız Mistik Müziği /Kyrgyz Spiritual Music

Konya Mystic Music Festival ‎8th Edition / 8. Festival, Sept 22-30 Eylül, 2011 Sept 28th / 28 Eylül - Kırgızistan / Kyrgyzstan Tengir Too Kırgız Mistik Müziği / Kyrgyz Spiritual Music Spiritual Music of Kyrgyzstan Kyrgyz music is rooted in the sensibility of nomads who inhabit a spectacular landscape of mountains, lakes, and pristine grasslands, where the elemental energies of wind, water, and echo, the ubiquity of birds and animals, and the legendary feats of heroes have inspired a remarkable art and technology of sound-making. Kyrgyz musicians venerate sites of spiritual power, called mazars, marked by distinctive natural phenomena: a spring or cave, a unique geological formation, or a botanical oddity, such as a grove of trees amid a landscape of barren steppe. These sites often correspond to the burial place of a saint, thus physically linking veneration of saints with offerings to spirits. An important genre within Kyrygyz Music is the epic storytelling. Recitation of epics, especially the Manas, an epic of almost 500000 lines, narrating the life and adventures of the national hero Manas is a very common traditional performance. The spiritual power of "mazars" has served as a vital locus of inspiration for the Manas reciters. Through visits to mazars, they seek contact with the spirit of the hero. Instrumental genres also play a large role in Kyrgyz music. At the heart of these genres is the music known in Kyrgyz language, as küü. Whatever their subject, küüs rely on <b>...</b>
