Boeing C-97 Stratocruiser Main landing gear test.

The Boeing C-97 Stratofreighter was developed towards the end of World War II by fitting an enlarged upper fuselage onto a lower fuselage and wings which were essentially the same as the B-50 Superfortress with the tail, wing, and engine layout being nearly identical. It was built before the death of Boeing president, Philip G. Johnson. The prototype XC-97 was powered by the 2200 hp (1640 kW) Wright R-3350 engine, and was fitted with a built-in ramp and a hoist to help in the loading and unloading of supplies and personnel through the large clamshell-type doors in the belly. On January 9, 1945 the first prototype, piloted by Major Curtin L. Reinhardt, flew from Seattle to Washington, DC in 6 hours 4 minutes, an average speed of 383 mph (616 km/h) with 20000 pounds (lb) of cargo, which was for its time rather impressive for such a large aircraft. Production models featured the 3500 hp (2610 kW) Pratt & Whitney Wasp Major engine, the same engine as the B-50. The C-97 had a useful payload of 35000 lb (16 t) and could carry two normal trucks or light tanks. The C-97 was also the first mass produced air transport to feature cabin pressurization, which made long range missions somewhat more comfortable for the crew and passengers. C-97s evacuated casualties during the Korean War. C-97s also participated in the airlift of relief materials to Uli airstrip (Biafra) during the Nigerian Civil War. Alitalia B767 with Landing Gear Problems at JFK

On February 9th, 2011, an Alitalia Boeing 767-300, registration EI-DDW performing flight AZ643 from EWR to FCO, was climbing out of EWR when the crew reported main gear trouble. The crew intended to divert to JFK but seeked visual confirmation from the ground that the main gear was in fact down. The jet overflew Republic airport at 1600 feet and received positive feedback, then went on to perform a missed approach at JFK's runway 22R for a final visual report from the tower. It then landed at JFK's runway 22R. Air traffic control recordings (source: liveatc.net) are of conversations with New York Approach (ROBER sector), New York Final Approach, JFK Tower and New York Departure.

NTSB Animation Hard Landing, Gear Collapse Federal Express Flight 647 Boeing MD-10-10F

Courtesy NTSB Executive Summary: On December 18, 2003, about 1226 central standard time, Federal Express Corporation (FedEx) flight 647, a Boeing MD-10-10F (MD-10), N364FE, crashed while landing at Memphis International Airport (MEM), Memphis, Tennessee. The right main landing gear collapsed after touchdown on runway 36R, and the airplane veered off the right side of the runway. After the gear collapsed, a fire developed on the right side of the airplane. Of the two flight crewmembers and five nonrevenue FedEx pilots on board the airplane, the first officer and one nonrevenue pilot received minor injuries during the evacuation. The postcrash fire destroyed the airplanes right wing and portions of the right side of the fuselage. Flight 647 departed from Metropolitan Oakland International Airport (OAK), Oakland, California, about 0832 (0632 Pacific standard time) and was operating under the provisions of 14 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 121 on an instrument flight rules flight plan. The National Transportation Safety Board determines that the probable causes of the accident were 1) the first officers failure to properly apply crosswind landing techniques to align the airplane with the runway centerline and to properly arrest the airplanes descent rate (flare) before the airplane touched down; and 2) the captains failure to adequately monitor the first officers performance and command or initiate corrective action during the final approach and landing. Airbus A380 Landing Gear Drop Test

Goodrich Landing Gear is a leading supplier of landing gear systems and components to original equipment manufacturers and the worlds airlines. Goodrich Landing Gear is found on leading large commercial transports worldwide. Goodrich landing gear is found on the latest aircraft to enter service such as the Airbus A380, as well as the workhorse aircraft of airline and cargo operators such as Boeing 737, 747, 767 and 777 models. Over the years, Goodrich Landing Gear has delivered more than 28000 landing gear shipsets to Boeing Commercial Aircraft, including legacy McDonnell Douglas models. This extensive experience is not only leveraged into new products and brought to bear to mature products to enhance their rugged reliability. Landing Gear Services When Airbus needed landing gear for its new A380 superjumbo airliner, they looked to Goodrich. At 18 ½ feet tall, a single A380 landing gear must support nearly 170 tons the equivalent of holding up five blue whales. The Goodrich main landing gear for the A380 is comprised of four main undercarriages two with four wheels each and two with six wheels each. Advanced materials make this huge landing gear system ruggedly reliable and remarkably lightweight. In addition to the Airbus A380 and the Boeing programs in production, the Goodrich Landing Gear team provides spares, overhaul and support to out-of-production models including older Boeing 737, 747, 757, 767, 777, DC-9, DC-10 and MD-11 models.

'Miracle' landing without nose gear: Iran Air ace saves lives on Boeing 727

Video courtesy: www.youtube.com The captain of an Iran Air Boeing 727 has managed to land his aircraft at Tehran's Mehrabad airport even though its nose landing gear failed to unfold. Captain Hooshang Shahbazi's piloting skill saved the lives of some 94 passengers and 19 crew members. Footage of the miraculous landing on October 18 became an internet sensation and Shahbazi's Facebook page ( www.facebook.com ) has attracted hundreds of new friends. The flight IR-742 from Moscow, Sheremetyevo was on approach to Tehran's Imam Khomeini Airport around when the crew did not receive a down and locked indication for the nose gear and aborted the approach. Following unsuccessful troubleshooting the crew decided to divert to Tehran's Mehrabad Airport where a low approach confirmed the nose gear was not extended. The crew subsequently performed a landing without the nose gear and came to a stand still on both main gear and the nose of the aircraft. The aircraft was evacuated, no injuries occurred. after takeoff, the landing gear didn't come up properly. Since the plane can't make the transcontinental trip with the gear deployed, they had to dump fuel for 3 hours over the Mediterranean. The gear had no problem staying down. It had a problem coming up. This means that this landing was pretty much a normal landing. The only concern was the off chance that there was a problem with the gear inasmuch as it may collapse. But that was a very far-off chance
