Landing St.Maarten from cockpit 747. After nosewheel landing camera touched windshield causing crackling noise. For those viewers who made comments (or new viewers who are thinking about making the comment) that this approach is too high and/or too fast or whatever else you might think, here some "free flying lessons" from someone who's flying B747's for 20 years: On an approach on instruments a B747 should cross the runway threshold (= the piano keys) with the main wheels at ± 35 ft above threshold. The 747 is so big that at that point the altitude of the cockpit is 35 ft higher, so the cockpit is at ± 70 ft when main wheels cross the threshold. On a visual approach, as is the case here at St.Maarten, we have to have some more margin. Normally the pilot aims to see the runway threshold disappear under the nose at 80 ft (add 35 ft for cockpit height, so when threshold disappears under the nose, the cockpit is at 115 ft) to have sufficient main wheel clearance. If you look at the video and notice the altitude callouts, you'll see the threshold disappear under the nose at the call 50, so actually I am a bit too low in stead of too high. (In fact I am only too low for a visual approach. If you look at my landing at JFK www.youtube.com you will see that I cross the threshold also at 50 ft, which is normal on an instrument approach. Note: the automatic altitude callouts you hear on this video are Radio Altimeter altitudes. The Radio Alt is zero when the main gear is on the <b>...</b>

This stands out as a fast landing/stop for the following reasons: a) The aircraft touches down quite far up the runway. b) All wheels touch down even later. c) Reverse thrusters open even later. d) The aircraft is still able to vacate the runway sooner than is usual for an aircraft of this size. They usually exit further up having touched down and activated reverse thrust much earlier. No RC planes in this video but lots of exciting full-sized action from the Flying NZ Central Area Rally held on November 5 2011 at Tokoroa New Zealand. There was a very brisk cross-wind that made landings and some take-offs decidedly difficult. Watch the pilots of 172s, 180s, Warriors, 150s and other Cessna, Piper and other light aircraft do battle with the weather as they try to get their aircraft onto the ground in one piece. The Lufthansa jet, with 137 passengers onboard, struggled through the strong winds of a powerful winter storm to land at Hamburg Airport, Spiegel Online reported. After skidding along the runway and rocking violently, the pilot was forced to abort the landing. Later, all 137 passengers arrived safely.

Here is video of the 'TNT' 737 crash-landing at Birmingham Airport (EGBB) This landing happened after the aborted attempt at Nottingham East Midlands, where the right main undercarrige was ripped off and took out the flaps on the right wing. The aircraft is presently sitting on the unused runway at Birmingham Airport and can be seen from the golf course nearby. (So my cousin informs me!) Filmed by a news helicopter that was in the area and handed over to the local Police and Investigation Team, this is probably the best footage of an incident like this I have seen.

Extremely high winds in northern Spain tested the skills of pilots as they landed in extreme conditions that swayed planes and frightened passengers. Video footage captured planes landing at Bilbao's Loiu Airport in sweeping winds which forced some pilots to abort the landing process. The Basque country registered winds of over 81 miles per hour (130 kilometers) . The State Meteorological Agency said winds reached up to 40 miles per hour (65 kilometers) at Loiu Airport, the daily Diario Vasco reported. AENA, the airport authority said high winds had affected air travel resulting in four aircraft being re-routed to different airports. Bilbao's airport, however, remained open throughout the bad weather. There were no cancellations but the conditions forced pilots to use their skills. Great Piloting, that's why they make the big bucks!

The landings commenced on June 6, 1944 (D-Day), beginning at 6:30 British Double Summer Time (H-Hour). In planning, D-Day was the term used for the day of actual landing, which was dependent on final approval. The assault was conducted in two phases: an air assault landing of American, British and Canadian airborne troops shortly after midnight, and an amphibious landing of Allied infantry and armoured divisions on the coast of France commencing at 6:30. The invasion required the transport of soldiers and materiel from the United Kingdom by troop carrying aircraft and ships, the assault landings, air support, naval interdiction of the English Channel and naval fire-support. There were also subsidiary 'attacks' mounted under the codenames Operation Glimmer and Operation Taxable to distract the Kriegsmarine and the German army from the real landing areas. The operation was the largest single-day amphibious invasion of all time, with 160000 troops landing on June 6, 1944. 195700 Allied naval and merchant navy personnel in over 5000 ships were involved. SUBSCRIBE TO BILLS CHANNEL -- Maho Beach is a beach on the Dutch side of the Caribbean island of Saint Martin, in the country of Saint Maarten. It is famous for the Princess Juliana International Airport adjacent to the beach. Arriving aircraft must touch down as close as possible to the beginning of runway 10 due to the short runway length of 2180 metres/7152 ft,[1] resulting in aircraft on their final approach flying over the beach at minimal altitude. Due to the unique proximity of low flying airliners, the location is very popular with plane spotters & thrill seeking tourists. This is one of the few places in the world where aircraft can be viewed in their flightpath just outside the end of the runway. Watching airliners pass over the beach is such a popular activity that daily arrivals and departures airline timetables are displayed on a board in most bars and restaurants on the beach, and the Sunset Beach Bar and Grill has a speaker on its outside deck that broadcasts the radio transmissions between pilots and the airport's control tower. There is a danger of people standing on the beach being blown into the water because of the jet blast from aircraft taking off from runway 10. The local government warns that closely approaching and departing aircraft can "result in serious injury and/or death." An additional fence has been added recently behind runway 10 to prevent irresponsible tourists from hanging on to the main fence surrounding the runway to be blasted by the <b>...</b>
