The Amazon Of Asia - Laos

October 2010 The Mekong River is already being put to serious economic use by the Chinese, and now the Lao people are determined to do the same. But can it really pull the nation out of poverty, and at what cost? Until recently the 'Amazon of Asia', was one of the world's last untouched rivers, but plans for a series of 55 dams in Laos look set to change that. With the majority of the population of Laos living below the poverty line, the government claims that hydropower is the quickest way to raise living standards, anticipating revenue of $80 million a year. Yet as scores of villages are uprooted to make way for the development, traditional subsistence communities are struggling. "We used to rely on nature for our living. Now if we don't buy, we can't eat", complains villager Cham Pha. The new dams also pose a threat to the ecosystem, endangering several species. Weighing up potential development and damage, the Lao people face a tough dilemma: "I'm worried about the environment but I want our village to have electricity". Lao MegaMall in Vientiane - Laos ~ Presentation

In just another 3 years Vientiane (the capital of Laos) is to receive its first Mega Shopping Mall. The construction started in July 2011 and should be completed by 2013. It is located in Sikhai Village, Vientiane. J&C Expat Services was given exclusive access to the plans and blueprints of the new "Regal MegaMall City"; a 5 storey mega-mall which will include over 1000 shops. Regal MegaMall City will also host restaurants, a children's playground, a video game arcade, a huge cinema complex and of course a hypermart (like Tesco, Big C, Carrefour or similar). Later, in a second phase, property development around the site has been planned which will include modern private residences for rent or sale.

Khammouane Part 1 - Laos

Khammouane or Khammouan (Lao: ຄໍາມ່ວນ) is a province of Laos, located in the center of the country. To the north it is bounded by Bolikhamxai; to the south, by Savannakhet. To the west is the Mekong and Nakhon Phanom Province, Thailand; to the east, the Annamite Mountain Range separates Khammouan from Vietnam. The vast forests of the Nakai-Nam Theun Biodiversity Conservation Area are an important watershed that feed many Mekong tributaries as well as form the catchment area for Nam Theun 2, the largest hydropower project in Laos. The Xebangfay, Hinboun and Nam Theun are the main rivers of the province. Plans to build a bridge over the Mekong, connecting Thakhek to Nakhon Phanom, are progressing. Construction is set to begin in 2008 and will take three years to complete. Part of the aborted Thakhek - Tan Ap railway would have crossed the province to connect with the North-South Railway at Tan Ap Railway Station, Quang Binh Province, Vietnam through the Mu Gia Pass.

Old Stupa Collapse in Laos

A sacred stupa at Thongpong village temple in Sikhottabong district, Vientiane, collapsed early yesterday morning. The incident occurre d at about 6:30am after a sustained period of heavy rainfall and villagers believe the stupa collapsed due to poor construction. According to Mr Noukham Saysourigna, the temple coordinator, the 37-metre high by 8-metre wide stupa named Prabhouthabath Phrathat Phonesavanh was built in 1965 by monk Pra-ajan Maha Saveth Xayaphet. The stupa was assembled seven years after the temple was built, at a time when there were about 10 houses in the village. Village elders said the collapse of the stupa can be attributed to poor construction and heavy rain. Recent earth tremors in the central and northern provinces and in neighbouring countries may also have contributed, they said. The stupa was built to house Buddhist relics and other ancient material collected and donated by Buddhists over time, including items describing the life and history of Buddha and other religious artefacts. "Buddhists came here on special occasions, especially Lao New Year, to worship," Mr Noukham said. Following the incident, officials have cordoned off the area to prevent people from coming too close to the debris, as it is still unknown exactly what was stored inside the stupa. Already people are flocking to see the wreckage and make donations for the restoration of the stupa. Village authorities have informed district and Vientiane authorities and the Ministry of ...

hot air balloon crash landing in Laos

We were not supposed to land here at all, but with the monsoon season coming, the winds are unpredictable (of course, we were told this after). As we were descending, we were told that the other hot air balloon had a rough landing and we looked over to see it had crashed beside the road, into the fence of a house. They told us to hold on and "brace ourselves" for a bad landing too- we ended up in a field where we JUST missed some trees and crashed into a fence, then 3 more times into field dividers as the balloon kept on going before it stopped. You can't really tell at the end but as I'm taking the video, Tee and I are hanging vertically from the basket. Listen to the commentary too ("put the video away, we're going to hit the trees," "this is NOT a joke, this is not funny"...) At the end, the hot air balloon company took my video and copied it and we got free t-shirts for all the shanagans lol.

CIA Covert Action in Iran, Vietnam, Laos, the Congo, Cuba, and Guatemala: Documentary Film (1965)

thefilmarchive.org DVD: www.amazon.com A covert operation (also as CoveOps or covert ops) is a military, intelligence or law enforcement operation that is carried clandestinely and, often, outside of official channels. Covert operations aim to fulfill their mission objectives without any parties knowing who sponsored or carried out the operation. It is normally sponsored by taxes from the government. Under United States law, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is the sole US Government agency legally allowed to carry out Covert Action. The CIA's authority to conduct Covert Action comes from the National Security Act of 1947. President Ronald Reagan issued Executive Order 12333 titled in 1984. This order defined covert action as "special activities", both political and military, that the US Government could legally deny. The CIA was also designated as the sole authority under the 1991 Intelligence Authorization Act and in Title 50 of the United States Code Section 413(e). The CIA must have a "Presidential Finding" issued by the President of the United States in order to conduct these activities under the Hughes-Ryan amendment to the 1991 Intelligence Authorization Act. These findings are then monitored by the oversight committees in both the US Senate and the House of Representatives. As a result of this framework, the CIA "receives more oversight from the Congress than any other agency in the federal government." The Special Activities Division (SAD) is a division of ...

See still photos at www.flickr.com and a book about Rice in Laos at books.google.com.ph and see IRRI's video playlist on Laos at www.youtube.com The Prime Minister of the Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), His Excellency Thongsing Thammavong, visited the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) on 11 May 2012, to sign a memorandum of understanding to advance collaboration in rice research between IRRI and Lao PDR. Through the MOU, IRRI will build on its collaboration with Lao PDR to develop rice varieties especially suited to the country, conserve local rice biodiversity, improve the production of quality seed, address factors that limit rice productivity, help mechanize rice production, and build capacity across the rice science and extension sector. Comments of Robert Zeigler, IRRI Director General: It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the International Rice Research Institute on this occasion of your historical visit to the Philippines. I would like to take a few minutes to summarize the long history of IRRI and Lao PDR partnership and some of our most noteworthy achievements. In 1964, the first high-yielding variety of rice, the non-glutinous variety IR8 from IRRI in the Philippines, was introduced to several provinces of Lao PDR. In 1969 and 1970, Lao PDR-IRRI collaboration began with testing of improved breeding material resulting from IRRI's early work on rice breeding and selection.
