This lava flow started around Oct 6, 2008 when it broke out of the existing tube system near the TEB source of the East Rift Zone. The video starts with a fast moving stream near the 1600 foot elevation and ends at the broad front of an a'a flow that it was feeding at the 1200 foot elevation. The surface flow has continued to flow through the western part of the Royal Gardens subdivision and on this date was about 1/2 mile beyond the base of the Pulama Pali hillside but still about 1.4 miles from the ocean. The front of the flow was about three miles from the end of Highway 130 on the Kalapana side and about five miles from the end of Chain of Craters Road on the national park side. It was spread out over a 1/4 mile front with numerous small pahoehoe streams filling in the shallow areas in the coastal plain. Hawaiian Volcano Observatory spokeswoman Janet Babb says on Tuesday the flow was about 1 1/2 miles from the ocean. There are reports hundreds of people watched the lava flow Monday night from a viewing area at Kalapana. Meanwhile, the flows have reached an abandoned subdivision. The lone remaining resident of the Royal Gardens subdivision says the current flow was about 500 yards from his home. Video courtesy Hawaiian Volcano Observatory The geologists with the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory have released a first look at the new fissure eruption that just started today between Pu`u `O`o and Napau Crater. According to geologists, the first portion of the video was shot from the air looking southwest at the fissure eruption between Pu`u `O`o and Napau Crater. The fissure segment in the tephra in the foreground opened seconds earlier, and only about 10 minutes after the eruption as a whole started. The cracks through the tephra are in the process of opening, though this can't be picked out at this distance. The second part of the video was shot from the ground in front of the propagating fissure, showing low spattering that started moments earlier. Thick white steam from the crack in the foreground indicates that lava is about to reach the surface, and is seen doing so seconds later. Lastly, we see an image of spattering near the front of the propagating fissure. These clips show a lava flow breaking out from an established tube near the base of the cliffside known as Pulama Pali. This flow was probably caused by a surge in the tube, causing the excess lava to break out unto the surface. The tube originated at Pu'u O'o, which is the active vent on the flank of Kilauea Volcano. The flow comes out of the tube very fluid and fast and then gradually becomes thicker and slower as it is cooled down by the surrounding air and the surface on which it is flowing. omg0dzilla shows you how to mine at the lava flow mining area. This place without any sort of XP boosting items will gain around 40k XP per hour. This is not as good as other places such as granite, but is much more bearable. I recommend mining here from 68 to 80 mining if you can't stand clicking every 2 seconds like myself. Once you hit 80 mining and have the full golden mining suit, you should consider going to the living rock cavern to mine concentrated gold deposits for maximum XP. The surface flows nearing the ocean continue to gain strength due to an increase in the supply of lava from the source on the East Rift Zone of Kilauea. On this date in the early morning it advanced to within 250 feet of the ocean and may reach it within hours if the supply is not interrupted. The first three clips in this video show a flow of lava break out from the developing tube about 1/4 mile from the ocean and burning the trees and vegetation in the area. In the last two clips, lava is shown cascading down the old sea cliff and onto a bench which formed about 20 years ago. This guide will show you what to wear, and take in your inventory then how to get there. I then show you how to mine there effectively, to gain the best possible xp. I also explain about each of the distractions that occur there and explain their benefits. This mining activity, is where you can obtain the full golden mining suit, which gives 2.5% bonus mining xp. This video was recorded by a friend on the morning of February 3, 2010 from about dawn to 10 AM. It is being used with his permission. The clips show a number of vigorous a'a flows as they reach the bottom of Royal Gardens at about the 300 foot elevation and two miles from the ocean. The lava has its origins at the Thanksgiving Eve Breakout vent on the East Rift Zone of Kilauea at about the 2500 foot elevation. It then travels through a tube system to about the top of Royal Gardens at the 1500 foot elevation. From there, it continues flowing through the very steep Pulama Pali either on the surface or shallow tubes. The total distance to this point is about five miles.
