First Follower: Leadership Lessons from Dancing Guy

Official transcript at sivers.org --- If you've learned a lot about leadership and making a movement, then let's watch a movement happen, start to finish, in under 3 minutes, and dissect some lessons: A leader needs the guts to stand alone and look ridiculous. But what he's doing is so simple, it's almost instructional. This is key. You must be easy to follow! Now comes the first follower with a crucial role: he publicly shows everyone how to follow. Notice the leader embraces him as an equal, so it's not about the leader anymore - it's about them, plural. Notice he's calling to his friends to join in. It takes guts to be a first follower! You stand out and brave ridicule, yourself. Being a first follower is an under-appreciated form of leadership. The first follower transforms a lone nut into a leader. If the leader is the flint, the first follower is the spark that makes the fire. The 2nd follower is a turning point: it's proof the first has done well. Now it's not a lone nut, and it's not two nuts. Three is a crowd and a crowd is news. A movement must be public. Make sure outsiders see more than just the leader. Everyone needs to see the followers, because new followers emulate followers - not the leader. Now here come 2 more, then 3 more. Now we've got momentum. This is the tipping point! Now we've got a movement! As more people jump in, it's no longer risky. If they were on the fence before, there's no reason not to join now. They won't be ridiculed, they won't stand ...

Friedman's Theory of Differentiated Leadership Made Simple

www.onlineacu.com Dr. Jonathan Camp discusses the book A Failure of Nerve by Edwin Friedman, who owes many of his ideas of leadership to Murray Bowen (1913-1990), a pioneer of family therapy. Central to Bowen's family systems theory is the concept of differentiation, or the ability of a person to maintain a strong sense of "self" within the family. The anxious family system is composed of emotional triangles, in which two conflicting members try to diffuse the anxiety between them by bringing in a third member. But this only heightens the anxiety of the system. A well-differentiated person is able to resist the lure of emotional triangles, which causes the family system to mature by influencing others to take responsibility for themselves. In A Failure of Nerve, Friedman applies Bowen's family systems theory to organizational leadership.

Management Skills VS Leadership Skills

www.enleadership.com This video in our Experiment in Leadership Development series addresses how we see management and leadership and their importance to each other. The Allied Forces had just won a quick and decisive victory in the first Gulf War. The efficiency and the effectiveness of the forces were notable. One of our principals was watching CNN interview one of the Generals in Saudi Arabia . The General who shared his observations and analysis on why the Allied Forces were so successful commented: The chain of command has empowered the armed forces in the field to get the job done. Decisions are being made at the battle front, not by the brass in Washington . Now thats enlightened leadership. Three years later, the book was published by Simon & Schuster. The book is in its 31st printing and has sold over 230000 copies worldwide. What weve learned is a profound demonstration about the power of human capital, and unleashing that power is at the very core of our work. Southwest Airlines' Colleen Barrett on 'Servant Leadership'

Most of the US airline industry is under assault from skyrocketing fuel prices and a sluggish economy, but the message that Southwest Airlines president Colleen Barrett brought to the recent Wharton Leadership Conference was about the importance of treating employees and customers well. Innovative leaders such as Southwest chairman Herb Kelleher and smart management of non-human resources -- especially Southwest's fuel purchasing hedges that have saved the company more than $2 billion -- have certainly helped the airline post profits for 35 consecutive years. But the foundation for all that, she said, has been making the satisfaction of employees and customers the highest priority.
