Learning English - Lesson One (Introduction)

Hi everybody this is Misterduncan in England. How are you today? Are you ok?...I hope so. Are you happy?...I hope so. Welcome to the very first episode of my series of English teaching videos Before I begin we will take alook at some of the common questions that often arise when talking about learning the English language. and more importantly, learning it as a second language. So, the first question must be... "Why do we need to learn English?" Of course one of the reasons why we need to be able to speak English nowadays is because the world is becoming smaller. Thanks to the internet and our developing global economy, more and more people are using English as a common way to communicate with each other. So now it has become unavoidable that companies and large businesses will need to employ people.who can speak more than their own native language, that is where English comes in. It is now officially considered as an international language. Of course learning anything is difficult and English is no exception. However, there are ways to make the situation easier. I have come up with my own list of general rules for learning English Do you want to hear them? Do you want to know what they are? Ok...let's go! Learning English takes time and patience. It cannot be rushed Try to relax and take it easy The most important thing you need at to beginning is a good vocabulary Without words, you have nothing to work with You must start with a strong foundation or base. and slowly ...

Chimpanzee vs. Human child learning (1/2)

PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE COMMENTING -- Link to Part 2: youtube.com A brief, interesting clip from National Geographic's "Ape Genius" documentary, comparing how a chimpanzee learns when compared with human children. An experiment conducted at St Andrews University revealed that while children tried to tackle a puzzle without trying to analyze it, chimps of the same age used logic and managed to solve it This test shows that the human child, even when given tasks that obviously have no meaning, follows the instructions given to them by the perceived authority figure, whereas the chimpanzees are more pragmatic, and exclude the extraneous steps. I feel that this is a good example of why it is important to raise children to believe as many true things and disregard as many false things as possible. Children are our shared future, and teaching them to think critically and rationally, so they can grow up to be mindful, effective adults that use reason to help build a better world is vitally important. Article from the Sunday Times: "Young chimps make chumps of children" www.timesonline.co.uk NOTE: This is a dramatic reenactment of an experiment for a TV documentary. The actual experiment criteria: ** The children used ranged from 41-59 months. ** The chimps used ranged from 2-6 yo Chimps mature at 13-14 for females, 15-16 for males. ** The box always contains a sticker. When the child gets the sticker, they trade that in for a food reward. ** The child is instructed to get the ...

Learning English - Lesson Two (Hello/Goodbye)

In this lesson we look at the many ways to say hello and goodbye. This is the new version of Lesson 2. Thank you to the many people who have said that 'Howdy' is not used as a formal greeting any more. However, it can be used as an informal one, as a way of greeting a person in a fun and casual way or. As I found out for myself !

Learning from StackOverflow.com

Google Tech Talk April 24, 2009 ABSTRACT Presented by Joel Spolsky Until recently, searching for help on highly technical programming problems has been a mess. A lot of what the search engines found was old discussions in forums, where you have a lot of wrong answers and out-of-date answers that you have to sift through yourself. You also found a lot of answers at sites that were hidden behind a pay wall, which uncloaked themselves for Google and then demanded membership fees to see the answers. StackOverflow.com is a programmer's Q&A site that launched last September to address these problems. It incorporates more modern ideas about community such as voting and public editing, and even a few ideas from game design, to create a much more successful way to get help with programming problems. In a few short months, it has grown to 14 million page views a month and reaches 3 million unique programmers every month. The lessons we've learned in creating a successful Q&A site has many implications for search which I'll share in this talk.

Recent Developments in Deep Learning

Google Tech Talk March 19, 2010 ABSTRACT Presented by Geoff Hinton, University of Toronto. Deep networks can be learned efficiently from unlabeled data. The layers of representation are learned one at a time using a simple learning module that has only one layer of latent variables. The values of the latent variables of one module form the data for training the next module. Although deep networks have been quite successful for tasks such as object recognition, information retrieval, and modeling motion capture data, the simple learning modules do not have multiplicative interactions which are very useful for some types of data. The talk will show how to introduce multiplicative interactions into the basic learning module in a way that preserves the simple rules for learning and perceptual inference. The new module has a structure that is very similar to the simple cell/complex cell hierarchy that is found in visual cortex. The multiplicative interactions are useful for modeling images, image transformations, and different styles of human walking. Speaker bio: www.cs.toronto.edu

Learning from Bacteria about Social Networks

Google Tech Talk (more info below) September 30, 2011 Presented by Eshel Ben-Jacob. ABSTRACT Scientific American placed Professor Eshel Ben-Jacob and Dr. Itay Baruchi's creation of a type of organic memory chip on its list of the year's 50 most significant scientific discoveries in 2007. For the last decade, he has pioneered the field of Systems Neuroscience, focusing first on investigations of living neural networks outside the brain. en.wikipedia.org Learning from Bacteria about Information Processing Bacteria, the first and most fundamental of all organisms, lead rich social life in complex hierarchical communities. Collectively, they gather information from the environment, learn from past experience, and make decisions. Bacteria do not store genetically all the information required to respond efficiently to all possible environmental conditions. Instead, to solve new encountered problems (challenges) posed by the environment, they first assess the problem via collective sensing, then recall stored information of past experience and finally execute distributed information processing of the 109-12 bacteria in the colony, thus turning the colony into super-brain. Super-brain, because the billions of bacteria in the colony use sophisticated communication strategies to link the intracellular computation networks of each bacterium (including signaling path ways of billions of molecules) into a network of networks. I will show illuminating movies of swarming intelligence of ...
