Lebanon's economy hit by Syrian unrest

Lebanon has announced that it will not comply with the Arab League's decision to impose economic sanctions on its neighbour Syria. With trade between the two countries amounting to an estimated $4.5bn a year, Lebanon's economy has been negatively impacted by the unrest in Syria. The prices of fruit and vegetables have soared, while the tourism sector has also been hurt by the Syrian government's crackdown on protests. Al Jazeera's Rula Amin, reporting from Beirut, examines the close economic ties between the two countries.

Peace activists in Tel Aviv believe a new Israeli-Lebanon war is now inevitable. CrossTalk: Lebanon's Trial

Four Hezbollah members have been indicted by a UN-backed court in the 2005 assassination of former prime minister Rafik Hariri. While some regard Hezbollah as a terrorist organization which is most likely behind the crime, others say it is all about politics. Who is interested in pressuring Hezbollah? Does the indictment undermine Hezbollah's credibility, or does it only boost its support among the Lebanese?

When reaching to solutions, those who were supposed to be a solution turn out to be the real problem: The judicial system, Media and civil society. The only solutions left are education and elections. Who Killed Hariri Lebanon

NICK KALDAS: Firstly, there is not one skerrick of evidence to suggest any involvement by Israel or any body else who's been accused by Hezbollah. Secondly, I think if you look at pure motive, political causes and so on, I'm not sure that Israel or anybody aligned with them has actually gained by the assassination of Mr Hariri in fact the opposite. According to Kaldas, it's more likely that Hezbollah's strategic partners rather than its enemies may have been involved. NK: Hezbollah would not have taken such a dramatic step such as the assassination of Hariri without at least the blessing and possibly the support of those two entities, Syria and Iran. With Hezbollah determined to never hand over the accused, it seems the Hariri case is moving towards a trial in absentia. Who killed Rafic Hariri? HASSAN ILLEIK: Once we know who killed John Kennedy, I'll answer you this question. What does Hezbollah have to be afraid of? NK: The truth - that's basically it. The only thing that you can say Hezbollah and Mr Nasrallah and the only reason they're attacking the investigation as they are at the moment is because they do not want the truth to come out. Six years after the carnage of the Hariri assassination much has changed in Lebanon and the Middle East. Hezbollah is stronger than ever and if the Lebanese have grown weary of this drawn-out hunt for Hariri's killers, Nick Kaldas is urging them to stay the course. -NK: I think that the Lebanese people, the international community ...

Lebanon Bank Governor to Guarantee Syrian Interests

The Lebanese Central Bank governor, Riyad Salemeh, said the country's banking sector respects the rights of all Syrian depositors and guarantees their interests. "Lebanese banks enjoy complete discretion and we did not issue any resolution to freeze the assets or the accounts of any Syrian personality," he said, in response to allegations that the country is under US pressure to act against Syrians who have bank accounts in Lebanon. "We are keen to preserve this historical relationship between traders and merchants and industrialists, and of course Syrians, if they want to deal with our banks, so long as the sources of funds are clear, they are welcome to do so. We have not issued any orders regarding this," said Salemeh. The governor also denied reports about being pressurized by a visiting American delegation on the same issue. "Lebanon is a small country and it is true that the sector suffered a setback because of the Lebanese Canadian bank case. Yes, we are put under pressure but at the end, in Lebanon as in Switzerland, banks do what serves their interests." "We did have an issue with the Lebanese-Canadian bank but this file was closed and it is over and there is no targeting of the financial sector and there have been statement from Americans about this. No bank in Lebanon is being targeted and the climate is back to normal. This year banking sector has made gains, not losses. Deposits increased 7 percent, same for profits while loans increased by 15 percent," he ...

Lebanon warns Israel

Lebanon issued a complaint to the UN, warning Israel the setting of a maritime border between the two countries by Jerusalem threatened peace and security in the region. Israel's cabinet on July 10 approved the demarcation of the northern maritime borderwith Lebanon, in an effort to protect economic rights in offshore territories that Lebanon is claiming as its own. Israel submitted its map to the UN to counter a map that Lebanon submitted last year. The area of the Mediterranean Sea in question is close to an area where Americanand Israeli firms discovered two massive natural gas fields. On Monday Lebanese Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour sent a letter to UNSecretary General Ban Ki-moon rejecting geographic coordinates submitted by Israel.. The letter accused Israel of infringing on Lebanon's Exclusive Economic Zone, a sea zone that would give Beirut the right to search the area for natural resources. Mansour said Beirut urged Ban Ki-moon to take all necessary measures to avoid conflict. An Israeli official said borders cannot be demarked unilaterally, but rather must be agreed upon by both countries, or go to an arbitrator that both sides agree upon. Since Lebanon has refused to do either, the official said, it can't just set the maritime border on its own. Once it did, he added, Israel had no choice but to do the same in order to protect its interests.

Israel has deployed new missile defence systems near its border with Lebanon, fearing strikes from Hezbollah. And there's also speculation it might be willing to divert Western pressure away from him, by launching an attack against Israel. RT's Paula Slier reports now on how the delicate balance in the region, could spill further out of control.

Baath Party Thugs Terrorize Pharmacy Owners in Lebanon

You see the loud-mouthed criminal baath party members enter the pharmacy and break merchandise and the boss tells the pharmacist that he, the thug, is the Local Baath Party head and that he may come back and shoot them. The behaviour caught on the video tape is standard daily practive for Baath Party thugs and may help to explain to viewers why the masses of Syrians cannot take any more humiliation and indignity and have risen up for Freedom.
