Stravinsky's "Les Noces"--the Royal Ballet, Part 1/3

Zenaida Yanowsky and David Pickering as the Bride and Bridegroom. The Royal Ballet's version of Les Noces holds a special claim to authenticity and history, as it was staged by the original choreographer, Bronislava Nijinska in 1966, and documented with much detail. It was premiered on June 13, 1923, by the Ballets Russes. Nijinska's austere vision is one of celebration and ritual among the family and community, not so much with the two principals. Critic Alfred Kalisch, reviewing the London premiere of the ballet, described it as "enough to convert intending brides and bridegrooms to celibacy." As always, Stravinsky's music seems to make more sense when danced to. Robert Craft wrote: "The lament in the epithalamium at the end of Svadebka is as much for the loss of Holy Mother Russia as for the virginity of Nastasia Timofeyvna."

Igor Stravinsky - Les Noces, Part 1

Les Noces, ballet in 4 tableaux for vocal soloists, chorus, 4 pianos & percussion (1923) Part 1 Scene 1: The Bride's Chamber Scene 2: At the Bridegroom's Scene 3: The Bride's Departure Part 2 Scene 4: The Wedding Feast Carolyn Sampson, soprano Susan Parry, alto Vsevolod Grivnov, tenor Maxim Mikhailov, bass RIAS Kammerchor musikFabrik Daniel Reuss Les noces has an important place in Stravinsky's ballet output: it is a pivotal work, marking the end of his Russian period, and also the beginning of his Neo-Classical period. Les noces comes after the three main Russian-period ballets -- The Firebird, Petroushka, and The Rite of Spring -- and is the obvious result of Stravinsky's years of involvement with Russian folk music idioms. While Les noces has fewer direct borrowings from the folk tradition than its predecessors, it is, as musicologist Richard Taruskin has noted, the work that is perhaps most Russian: Stravinsky, so familiar with Russian folk music by the second decade of the century, was able to create his own generic folk melodies without reference to source materials. The ballet is one of Stravinsky's hybrids, a "dance cantata" that combines dance with instrumental music and solo and choral singing. There is not really a plot to the ballet; instead, it is a series of scenes depicting the ritualized preparations for a Russian peasant wedding. Stravinsky himself wrote the text, drawing on Russian popular texts and songs for his words. The piece is constructed in two ...

Igor Stravinsky Les Noces 1919 Instrumental Version Rare Craft LP

Igor Stravinsky Les Noces (Tablaux 1 and 2 - 1919). Instrumentation: includes pianola, 2 cimbaloms, harmonium and percussion. Recorded in 1973 The Orpheus Chamber Ensemble, Gregg Smith Singers with Robert Craft conducting this rare LP premiere recording of this version. I put the cover of the original LP, a short video of the actual LP on the turntable and a selection of photos as a visual element. Though this piece didn't reach the stage in its final form until 1923, Stravinsky conceived the idea for a "dance cantata" about a 19th-century Russian peasant wedding 11 years earlier, when he was still working on The Rite of Spring. He began the score in earnest in 1914, by which time he was living in Switzerland. Though composition was interrupted by work on the burlesque Renard, he had finished Les Noces (The Wedding) in the short score, with solo voices and four part chorus, by 1917. Then, however, the problems began. He first began scoring the opening scene for a vast orchestra of 150 players, but soon abandoned that as impractical, and tried out the idea of a standard orchestra separated into groups. After that he tried out a smaller ensemble containing a player piano, harmonium and two cimbaloms, but the problems of synchronisation between the automatic instrument and the live performers seemed insurmountable. Finally, in 1921, he settled upon the extraordinary sound world ...

10/10 - Les Noces Sanglantes/The Terrible Wedding (Les Vampires) 1916

www.zazzle.co.uk Les Vampires (1915/1916) is a 10-part silent film serial. It was written and directed by Louis Feuillade and stars Musidora as "Irma Vep" a femme fatale whose name is a suspicious anagram of "vampire." The serial is set in Paris, France and follows the exploits of a gang of master criminals (known in the period as an "Apache gang") who call themselves "Les Vampires." There are 10 episodes, averaging around 40 minutes each, totalling about 6 and a half hours. Olivier Assayas 1996 movie Irma Vep, with a story line of a director's attempt to remake Les Vampires, is both an homage to the innovative nature of the original film and a critique of the then current state of French cinema. Stravinsky's Les Noces (The Wedding) Part 1 performed by OCU Choral Dept

Oklahoma City University's Entire Choral Department, several pianists on grand pianos, percussionists, and a handful of soloists performing Igor Stravinsky's Les Noces. This is from Spring of 2003 I think. We learned this for a visiting choral conductor for this concert. We learned the entire piece in a month or two with heavy rehearsals. So no it's not perfect, but with the short time we had to spend on it, it's pretty good. I think before the performance we'd only sung through the entire piece from start to finish just Once without stops. So please be kind with your comments. Thanks

Corpse Bride (les Noces Funèbres) - duo piano

This is a duet performed by me (Olplopplop) and Vilyjix. Sorry for the out of sync, but as we are not living close to each other, it's difficult to play and record it neatly. This excerpt is about the music from the movie "Corpse bride" directed by Tim Burton. The music was written by Danny Elfman. It's an arrangement we've done on the basis of Victor's solo and Victor/Emilie's duet.

René Bosc conducts "Les Noces" by Igor Stravinsky (1919) instrumental ensemble / no chorus!...

Ensemble de la SMCQ de Montréal (2 cymbalums, 2 percussions, 1 harmonium & 1 pianola (Disklavier Yamaha) Last rehearsal before the tutti with the soloists & the chorus!... René Bosc, conductor Les Noces was to have the longest gestation of all the works of Igor Stravinsky. The musical material was completed in 1917, but it took him six years to draw up the definitive orchestration of the piece. Though the 1917 version for chamber orchestra suffers from a lack of verifiable sources, this is no longer the case for the incredible 1919 version recorded here. Even Stravinsky himself considered this fragment superior in certain respects to the definitive version, because more authentic. In proposing this 1919 version for comparison with the --definitive- 1923 version, we see these two faces of one and the same work as astonishing proof of the composer's multifaceted genius.
