Jo Swinson: The Liberal Democrats are in government on your side

What would an extra £60 each month mean to you, let us know here - 60pounds.org Nearly two years ago, Liberal Democrats chose to do the right thing for the good of the country at a time of crisis. Liberal Democrats didn't come into politics to make cuts, but with the economy on the brink of collapse we knew we had to get the debt under control and the country back on track. But there is more to this Coalition Government than cuts. We're all feeling the squeeze, but Liberal Democrats are in government, on your side. We're offering you real practical help whether you are young or old. ... The best way to give children a fair start in life is to help those who need it most when they need it the most -- in the crucial early years and through their school lives. That's why Liberal Democrats are giving free early years education to all disadvantaged two-year-olds and extending it for all three and four year olds. And the Liberal Democrat Pupil Premium is leading a revolution in schools, making sure children get the support they need to stop them falling behind in class. For those a little older, we are determined to make sure young people have the skills they need to help them enter the world of work. That's why Nick Clegg launched the £1bn Youth Contract, to give all 18 to 24-year-olds the opportunity to earn or learn. And it's why Vince Cable is delivering more apprenticeships than Britain has ever had before. ... For those of you in work, raising families and wrestling with ...

Liberal Democrats support for Pro-Israeli Lobby-A Simple Question-03-26-2012

Last week in the UK House of Lords, a Liberal democrat resigned following a row over remarks interpreted as being anti-Israel. Despite an ultimatum from Nick Clegg, Baroness Tonge refused to apologize for her comment that Israel would not last forever in its present form. Lady Tonge had warned the country to "beware" because the US would eventually end its support for its ally in the Middle East. Israel's Ambassador Daniel Taub interpreted the statement as a direct threat to Israel's existence. But was her statement really inappropriate? Is there no truth to her statement? What about her right to express her opinion?

Lib Dems Eject Baroness Jenny Tonge for Criticising Israel about treatment of the Palestinians

Baroness Jenny Tonge has long been a target of the Israeli lobby in the UK for her outspoken remarks on Israel's treatment of the Palestinians. But now her own party leader, Nick Clegg, has turned on her, after she spoke at a meeting at Middlesex University. Her words were in the context of a debate on whether Zionism equated to apartheid. Her remarks are shared by a growing number of activists and critics of Israel who are calling for a one-state solution. But venturing down that path seems unacceptable within the British establishment. Nick Clegg, leader of the liberal democrats and deputy Prime Minister, ordered Baroness Tonge to apologise, and when she refused, he announced her departure from the party. That, while at the same time claiming that the Lib Dems are proud to campaign for Palestinian rights. It seems politicians are falling over each other to condemn her remarks. Labour leader Ed Miliband has gone further, stating that there is no space in British politics for questioning the existence of Israel. Jenny Tonge had in fact only questioned the sustainability of the status quo, including Israel's siege of Gaza, and its occupation of the West Bank which prevents the existence of a Palestinian state. Activist Ken O'Keefe, who also spoke at the meeting, says pro-Israel activists had been heckling and goading the panellists all evening. As deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg broke with previous party policy in supporting a change in the law of universal jurisdiction ...

Local Elections 2012

Click here to share on Facebook - on.fb.me Our priorities are clear. In difficult times we must make sure we do all we can to help ordinary working people. That is why, unlike Labour or the Conservatives, every Liberal Democrat council in England has frozen council tax. That is why Liberal Democrat councils are more likely to earmark funds for the lowest paid than any other. And that is why this month Liberal Democrats in Government are delivering tax cuts for more than 21m working people. Lib Dem councillors across the country work hard for local people. We listen to local people and give them a voice in decisions made about their communities. In power we work to protect the services people most value, and to protect the most vulnerable in society. We do this making best use of public money. This month Liberal Democrat policy has: - Given £1.25bn extra to our schools, aimed at the most disadvantaged pupils - Raised the Income Tax threshold again, increasing the number of people lifted out of paying income tax altogether to more than 1 million - Given 21m people a £130 tax cut, on top of the £200 tax cut they received last year - Ensured pensioners on the full state pension will get a record £5.30 a week increase in their pensions. The full state pension has increased by £500 since the Coalition came into power - Started a £1bn Youth Contract to make sure every out-of-work young person has the opportunity to earn or learn

Nick Clegg: I wish you all a very happy New Year

This time last year I spoke about how the most important job for Liberal Democrats was dealing with the economic problems we inherited. 12 months on, that task remains the number one priority for our party and the Coalition. We have had to make some very difficult decisions, but they've been the right ones for the long term good of our country. But that economic rescue mission is not over yet. That's why, thanks to the Liberal Democrats, the Coalition has been helping people get through these difficult times with measures to make life fairer and easier. 2011 was the year we lifted nearly a million low paid workers out of paying income tax altogether and cut taxes for 23m people - because I believe putting money back into peoples pockets makes all the difference. It was the year more than a million children got a fairer start in life, with extra support at school through our Pupil Premium and free early years education for toddlers - because I believe that helping the youngest take their first steps in life makes all the difference. It was the year we guaranteed pensioners a decent increase in their pension - because I believe dignity in retirement makes all the difference. Throughout, we have taken big long-term decisions that will change the way our economy works for the better - rebalancing it away from the City of London towards stronger, more sustainable growth. And next year we will do more. The world's first Green Investment Bank putting millions into green jobs and ...
