Mary Ann Thomas took the lead for the Ad Libs on this Top Ten hit from February of 1965, but this group from Bayonne, NJ was never able to duplicate its success again. The recording was produced by the legendary songwriting team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller for their Red Bird Label. The Manhattan Transfer made it a hit all over again years later, but there's nothing like hearing the original.

LINK: tinyurl.com The Ad Libs were an early-'60s vocal group from New Jersey whose female lead vocals and male-voiced backing prefigured the jazzy doo wop singing style of several later groups, including Manhattan Transfer. They scored a major hit in early 1965 with "The Boy From New York City," written by John T. Taylor, a saxophone player who had worked with various big band groups as far back as the '30s. By the early '60s, John T. Taylor had quit playing music and had turned his attention to teaching. During this time, he heard a young Hudson County quintet who were calling themselves the Creators. The group consisted of Hugh Harris, Danny Austin, James Wright, John Alan, and Chris Coles. By mid-1963, the Creators had released their first record on the TR label without any chart success. A single for the Phillips label, "I'll Stay Home," met the same fate a year later. The group re-formed in 1964 in Newark, NJ. Dave Watt and Norman Donegan replaced departing members Wright, Alan, and Coles, and they added a female lead vocalist, Mary Ann Thomas. A new name was needed, and thereafter they began calling themselves the Ad Libs. By now, Taylor's jazz-inflected songwriting along with the Ad Libs' natural harmonies created a sound like no other group. This was best personified on the upbeat piano <b>...</b>

From October 15th, 1950 - Sometimes I think (unfortunately) that their ad-libs - when they end the show with a few extra minutes to kill - are somewhat scripted (especially when they just happen to have perfect props laying nearby). But this end of show stretch definately took Dean and Jerry by surprise. They had no material whatsoever prepared for an emergency like that, but they showed their true live talents with lightning fast ad-libbing. I laughed so hard I nearly choked on my lemonade!

The analytical use of Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) has its origins back to 1963 with the study of Mrs. Debras and Guedon. Since then, the technology associated with LIBS has evolved (lasers, spectrometers, detectors, data analysis). However despite considerable advantages that only laser-induced plasmas can provide, the delicacy to control and model their basic fundamentals leads to a slower integration of LIBS in the analytical field than other established plasma based techniques such as GD- or ICP-OES. A review of the basic principles of LIBS is given and discussed to better understand the technique, the reasons of its slower integration but nevertheless appreciate and explore the unique possibilities that only LIBS can provide to the analytical community.
