But his second and third albums, Multiply (2005) and Jim (2008), were soul and funk records heavily indebted to the 60s and 70s. Berlin-based Lidell made his debut as one half of Super_Collider with Cristian Vogel. Lidell's first solo album, Muddlin' Gear (2000), was released on Warp after Squarepusher tipped them off to his talent. In 2005 he shocked his label bosses by turning in a record firmly indebted to soul stars like Otis Redding and Stevie Wonder. Despite initial reluctance, they agreed to release it, and Multiply became Lidell's big breakthrough. It earned rave reviews in the press, and some of the songs were licensed for use on TV, helping to make it one of Warp's biggest-selling albums.
