Paolo Favaro: Portable Light Field Imaging: Extended Depth of Field, Aliasing and Superresolution

From ICCP11 Hosted by Carnegie Mellon University, Robotics Institute April 8, 2011 Abstract: Portable light field cameras have demonstrated capabilities beyond conventional cameras. In a single snapshot, they enable digital image refocusing, ie, the ability to change the camera focus after taking the snapshot, and 3D reconstruction. We show that they also achieve a larger depth of field while maintaining the ability to reconstruct detail at high resolution. More interestingly, we show that their depth of field is essentially inverted compared to regular cameras. Crucial to the success of the light field camera is the way it samples the light field, trading off spatial vs. angular resolution, and how aliasing affects the light field. We present a novel algorithm that estimates a full resolution sharp image and a full resolution depth map from a single input light field image. The algorithm is formulated in a variational framework and it is based on novel image priors designed for light field images. We demonstrate the algorithm on synthetic and real images captured with our own light field camera, and show that it can outperform other computational camera systems. Bio: Paolo Favaro received the D.Ing. degree from Universita di Padova, Italy in 1999, and the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Washington University in St. Louis in 2002 and 2003 respectively. Lytro Lightfield Camera Demo

This is a Lytro light field camera, and its anodized aluminum and silicone skin hides an engineering feat — a proprietary sensor that the firm claims can capture 11 million rays of light instantly. That's paired to an 8x zoom lens with an f/2 aperture and eleven elements, plus a glass touchscreen around back, which allows you to touch any portion of the image to refocus on that part of the scene. It's crazy and awesome and weird and we got to play with it. www.theverge.com

David Wilcock: The Source Field Investigations -- Full Video!

Did human extraterrestrials visit Earth -- and predict a Golden Age will culminate in the year 2012, freeing us from evil, fear and doom? Did the founding fathers of America inherit this prophecy -- and encode it directly into the Great Seal of the United States? Why is there a pyramid with an eye inside a glowing triangle? Is Novus Ordo Seclorum quoted from an ancient prophecy text -- the greatest and most secret treasure of the Roman Empire -- predicting that humans on Earth will transmute into "light beings" and achieve Apotheosis -- where Man becomes God -- and the 'Gods' themselves return? David Wilcock reveals the stunning scientific proof that DNA and biological life emerge directly out of the Source Field... a universal matrix of energy creating all space, time, matter, energy, biological life and consciousness -- and we are indeed about to experience the Greatest Moment of All Time. Visualizing Light over a Fruit with a Trillion FPS Camera, Camera Culture Group, Bawendi Lab, MIT

Video of a fruit illuminated by a femtosecond laser pulse and captured at an effective trillion frames per second. Light moves less than 1 mm per frame. We have built an imaging solution that allows us to visualize propagation of light at an effective rate of one trillion frames per second. Direct recording of light at such a frame rate with sufficient brightness is nearly impossible. We use an indirect 'stroboscopic' method that combines millions of repeated measurements by careful scanning in time and viewpoints. The device has been developed by the MIT Media Lab's Camera Culture group in collaboration with Bawendi Lab in the Department of Chemistry at MIT. A laser pulse that lasts less than one trillionth of a second is used as a flash and the light returning from the scene is collected by a camera at a rate equivalent to roughly 1 trillion frames per second. However, due to very short exposure times (roughly one trillionth of a second) and a narrow field of view of the camera, the video is captured over several minutes by repeated and periodic sampling. Cold Steel Lites: "Keeping It Light, Fast" by Nutnfancy

If it doesn't serve a direct life saving function you will probably pitch it. It's easy to talk big on the forums and stateside but when the bullets start flying and you're humping 100 pounds of gear over rugged mountains, unnecessary crap is getting pitched. I have seen this old Firepower vs Mobility equation play out again and again and I readily detect guys who DON'T get it. And yet having a fixed blade on your LBE is highly advised. For both utility and defensive use. The Cold Steel Outdoorsman and Tanto Lite blades fill the bill. At just 7 ounces, these featherweights can come along for the ride, ready for service. The are extremely high value for their abilities: only $20 (price, availability subject to change). Don't expect heavy duty splittling, hacking, or chopping performance here. That's not their job. Utility, food prep, and stabbing bad guys is their calling and in that they will rock. The 4116 German produced steel is up to the task, featuring adequate but not phenomenal rust resistance and edge holding. They arrive "offensively sharp" which is just the way we like them. The blades' bright finish on these versions should be DuraCoated (example shown) for improved camouflage if their combat bound. Krylon paint will work after a good sanding job too. The Tanto is a featherweight version of Cold Steel's gorgeous full featured Tantos but it's much lighter. The tip on both knives are strong with great penetrating power. The Outdoorsman blade is much better belly ...

TechFest 2011: Applied Sciences Group: Smart Interactive Displays

Our research shows: Steerable AutoStereo 3-D Display: We use a special, flat optical lens (Wedge) behind an LCD monitor to direct a narrow beam of light into each of a viewer's eyes. By using a Kinect head tracker, the user's relation to the display is tracked, and thereby, the prototype is able to steer that narrow beam to the user. The combination creates a 3-D image that is steered to the viewer without the need for glasses or holding your head in place. Steerable Multiview Display: The same optical system used in the 3-D system, Wedge behind an LCD, is used to steer two separate images to two separate people rather than two separate eyes, as in the 3-D case. Using a Kinect head tracker, we find and track multiple viewers and send each viewer his or her own unique image. Therefore, two people can be looking at the same display but see two completely different images. If the two users switch positions, the same image continuously is steered toward them. Retro-Reflective Air-Gesture Display: Sometimes, it's better to control with gestures than buttons. Using a retro-reflective screen and a camera close to the projector makes all objects cast a shadow, regardless of their color. This makes it easy to apply computer-vision algorithms to sense above-screen gestures that can be used for control, navigation, and many other applications. A display that can see: Using the flat Wedge optic in camera mode behind a special, transparent organic-light-emitting-diode display, we can ...

It was a response to my "Unnaturally moving object At the crest of the tsunami wave Japan 11 03 2011" The raw footage which I uploaded was masterfully edited in this clip by Derek to highlight the anomaly. Sending love, strength and healing to our Mother Earth and all life upon, within and above her, as she moves through these shifts. May all beings who have suffered, not have done so in vein. May all those who have survived live on to spread the light and love of a New age.. Namaste.

Lennard Fisk Solar Model - Kepler's Heliosphere : Solar Tornado Vortex Magnetic Fields Lines

Epistemology / Research - By: (Me) Nicholas Ellis @ www.youtube.com/sn1pe352 "You must learn to think one octave higher. Only then will you learn how implosion energy works."-Viktor Schauberger Concentrated spheres, such as Earth and Sun, are surrounded by layers of light of equal pressures. Clouds float around the Earth in them. The reason they float in curves parallel to the Earth is because of these spherical equipotential planes of pressures which curve as the Earth curves. Curved pressures of light act as lenses to multiply and divide light radially. (Spiraling) Light rays which pass through curved planes concentrate to a point when projected through light lenses of space in the convex direction and decentrate when they pass through the concave direction. "You must look at the processes of motion in the macrocosmos and microcosmos accurately, and copy them!"-Viktor Schauberge The Sun's Magnetic Field - New and Improved Model? Lennard Fisk of the University of Michigan released a new model of the Sun's magnetic field last year. His model was very different from the model made in the 1950's. More and more evidence is being collected that supports Fisk's model. Could this be a new scientific breakthrough!? We'll see! Fisk's model suggests that the magnetic field lines coming from the Sun look like a wild tornado The older model suggests the magnetic field lines look like the path water would take while coming from a lawn sprinkler. How Can Galaxies Travel Faster Than Light?

Get Astronomy tweets here twitter.com Probably my biggest regret when I made the Hubble Deep Field in 3D video is saying the phrase "these galaxies are racing away from us, in some cases faster than light". I had originally thought I was being clever and the comment would spur discussion. instead there was no discussion, only name calling and I mightily regretted putting it in there. Anyway, this video was a long time coming, I had been meaning to make this for some time to illustrate what I was talking about.
