THE LINGUISTS - Official Trailer

THE LINGUISTS (www.thelinguists.com) is a hilarious and poignant chronicle of two scientists—David Harrison and Gregory Anderson—racing to document languages on the verge of extinction. In Siberia, India, and Bolivia, the linguists confront head-on the very forces silencing languages: racism, humiliation, and violent economic unrest. David and Greg's journey takes them deep into the heart of the cultures, knowledge, and communities at risk when a language dies. THE LINGUISTS world premiered at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, screened at more than 40 festivals worldwide, and aired on PBS in 2009. THE LINGUISTS is produced and directed by Seth Kramer, Daniel A. Miller, and Jeremy Newberger of Ironbound Films. For more information, visit www.thelinguists.com and www.ironboundfilms.com.

The joy of being a linguist and the power of input.

I am sometimes criticized for calling myself a linguist. Here I discuss the meaning of the term. I also discuss the importance and convenience of input based learning and how important it was even in the Middle Ages. I refer to two posts at my blog, and a video at youtube, here are the links . thelinguist.blogs.com thelinguist.blogs.com www.youtube.com

Polyglots vs Linguists vs Philologists

A lot of people are confused by the term "linguist". A linguist is a scientist of linguistics, not somebody who can speak many languages. I know many linguistics professors who are not sufficiently bilingual, but they can still call themselves linguists. Speaking and studying are two different things. Multilingual or polyglots speak many languages. And this ability is not related to the science of linguistics, although I'm sure linguists could study or analyze polyglots. Philology was replaced by linguistics and there aren't really any practitioners of it today, except Professor Arguelles. Professor Arguelles is not a polyglot unless he has the ability to speak the languages he studies.

What is linguistics? How do linguists study language?

This brief introduction to linguistics asks simple questions about language and languages, then follows the various branches of linguistics that have arisen in attempt to answer those questions. Take this presentation as a rapid tour through modern linguistics or as a thoughtful inquiry into what language is and how we could understand it. For specific lessons that introduce many of these topics - including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, historical linguistics and logic - head to: www.nativlang.com/linguistics/

Linguist Rap

This is something else I did for my high school film class. I think it speaks for itself. Lyrics MC Chomsky in the house. I've been searching and looking for something to learn, I need a major in university, got nowhere to turn. You can keep computer science, don't want no liberal arts, It's all a mute point, 'cause I know where I'll start. (Chorus) 'Cause I'm a linguist (I study language all day long) I'm a linguist (Analyzing poetry and song) The MC Hammer of grammar, I'ma' send you all home When it comes to linguistics, I'm like Sir William Jones. My folks don't approve, they think syntax is sin, They can't handle a career choice that's so full of win. Just 'cause it cost 40k to get my Harvard MA, I still don't have a job, but that's okay. (Chorus) I know German to French, Greenlandic to Zulu, Aramaic, Altaic, Suomi and Hebrew, From the Indo-Europeans up to Sino-Tibet, Learning all about languages is my raison d'être. (Chorus) Word. λ♥[love] (Linguistics Love Song)

Copyright Christine Collins, 2010-2011 Need to win the heart of a linguist? It's your lucky day! Here is a convenient, terminology-dropping, non-gender-specific love song for all your linguist-seducing needs. Usual disclaimers: Audio quality's not great, it doesn't really end very nicely, my friend made me upload it, etc., etc. Okay, now that part's over, lyrics: let me have your heart and i will give you love the denotation of my soul is the above if there's anything i lack, it's you as my double brackets, you make me mean things i can't say enough consider me your anaphor, i'm bound to you there's no one else that i could be referring to your features all attract me we're such a perfect match, please agree with me i need to be with you well i don't know how to say exactly how i feel about you 'cuz it seems my broca's area stops working right around you forgive me my disfluency, there's nothing i can do, you see you speak to me, linguistically i'm yours now i know you tend to isolate, and that's all right like free morphemes you and i could lead our separate lives but if we were to agglutinate together we would do so great and i'd hate to miss the words we could derive well i don't know how to say exactly how i feel about you 'cuz it seems my broca's area stops working right around you forgive me my disfluency, there's nothing i can do, you see you speak to me, and linguistically i'm yours so please don't be my allophone and disappear really awkwardly whenever i start ...

"When Languages Die" author/linguist K. David Harrison

Informative conversation with K. David Harrison, assistant professor of linguistics at Swarthmore College near Philadelphia and the author of the new book "When Languages Die: The Extinction of the World's Languages and the Erosion of Human Knowledge". He is the Director of Research at the Living Tongues Institute and was recently featured in the documentary called "The Linguists" which followed hands-on linguistic field work in countries around the world. In this fascinating interview, Harrison discusses the critical importance of the world's many threatened languages and the vital knowledge that each language uniquely packages and holds for all of us. Harrison also discusses the need for more trained linguistic personnel to go out into some of the remotest parts of the world to document these nearly extinct languages before they are lost to humanity forever.

Linguist: Assassins Speak (SPOILERS)

The English version of Assassin's Creed contains numerous languages: Arabic, Turkish, French, German, Latin, and possibly others. This video translates into English only those lines spoken by main characters. The full motto of the Knights Templar is "Non nobis Domine, non nobis, sed nomini to da gloriam," meaning "Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but unto Thee give the glory." Just the first words were necessary for Altaïr to understand who Al Mualim was talking about. There's some controversy surrounding the proper translation of Altaïr's "La shay" line. While a word for word translation is something like "Nothing that is real is forever, but everything is possible." it's clear that the developers' intended meaning was "Nothing is true. Everything is permitted." As evidence, consider that in the Spanish version Altaïr says this line not in Arabic but in Spanish: "Nada es verdad. Todo esta permitido." Other characters speak Arabic as well. See the following links for a good overview: forums.ubi.com forums.ubi.com

Noam Chomsky Offers to Testify to Shane and Josh's Character and Good Record, Calls for Release

World renown linguist and public intellectual Noam Chomsky calls for the immediate release of Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal, who Iranian border guards detained while on a recreational hiking trip in Iraqi Kurdistan. He offers to testify to their good character and record of advocating for social and environmental justice. Shane and Josh have been unjustly detained since July 31, 2009. So far they have been treated as political collateral. They were told their case was political after just over one month. It is time they receive compassion and are allowed to return to their families.
