The Shortest Recession Ever, Silicon Valley is back!

Liz Gannes has just posted about angel investors starting to invest like hell again in startups with some facts: -formspring.me has just raised a $2.5 million angel round while it was only 4 months old -angel investment dealflow is twice in Q1 10 what it was in Q3 09 -Slide founder Max Levchin made more investments in the last month than in the previous year -Jessica Livingston of Y Combinator says investor attendance at latest Demo Day is up 50% -my friend and angel rock star Jeff Clavier has invested in 48 companies in the last 2.5 years (he never really stopped during the recession) I would add to that Blippy raising funding at around $30 million pre-money valuation I hear or Foursquares rumors of acquisition at more than $100 million. Another sign? The number of parties and evening events. There are more events happening every night that I can go to, just tonight I know about 3 of them. Clearly, Silicon Valley is back full speed and that is good news, lets see if ad dollars and other revenue opportunities follow. A good time to consider jumping on the entrepreneurship bandwagon if you have been thinking about it.

Mark Hall VodPod

VodPod Expands Video Sources for Widget with Firefox Extension VodPod, the San Francisco-based start-up that creates widgets of multiple video players, has doubled the number of video sites from which users pull clips to 3500 over the past six months. VodPod users have organized some 1 million videos into widgets. Mark Hall, CEO of VodPod, told me on Sunday that most of this increase can be attributed to a Firefox extension which provides a simple way to pull and organize videos. On Monday, VodPod is going to unveil a site redesign. In December, I interviewed Mark and have republished the interview and demo today. Update: My colleague Liz Gannes over at NewTeeVee has an explanation of VodPod and its functionality and value. -- Andy Plesser Posted on Sunday, April 27, 2008

Baron Davis, ibeatyou

Tuesday, July 29, 2008 No Blinking: Jessica Alba is in Staring Contest with 824 IBeatYou Users At the two-month-old start-up IBeatYou, "celebrities and average consumers alike" can "roll up their sleeves, get dirty, and have fun competing," cofounder Cash Warren says. Users challenge each other to contests, from "Best 60 second rant" to "Best 'While You Were Sleeping' Photo," and vote for the winner based on the video, photo and text submissions. Cofounders and competitive childhood friends Abdul Khan, NBA star Baron Davis, and Cash Warren have harnessed the star power of Steve Nash, Will Farrel, Adam Sandler, and Warren's wife Jessica Alba to draw users to the site. I posted Jessica Alba's staring contest entry below. Liz Gannes at NewTeeVee pointed out that Paparazzi-harassed celebrities could use the site to exert control over their public images--just as politicians do on YouTube. But for the site to succeed, people need to come for more than celebrity sitings, Khan tells her. Earlier this month another contest platform, Amuso, opened to the public, providing IBeatYou some fresh competition. Andy interviewed Khan, Davis and Warren at the AlwaysOn conference at Stanford last week. --Kelsey Blodget, Associate Producer

Friday, May 23, 2008 www.beet.tv Qik's Business Model Revealed: Subscription, Ads and Rev Share with Carriers and Handset Makers.....Steve Garfield Explains How it Works Qik is a service which allow users of high-end Nokia phones to shoot and upload distinct segments to a company server. These segment are saved on a user's channel and can be automatically sent to YouTube, Facebook, Seesmic and various blogging platforms. The service is being used by leading edge video bloggers incluing Robert Scoble and Steve Garfield and adoption is expanding. Below Steve explains how he uses the service. Venture Beat reported last month that company raised $3 million. Liz Gannes over at NewTeeVee expanded on that original report. Earlier this week in New York at Streaming Media East, I interviewed Qik's Bhaskar Roy who explains the functionality of Qik. One thing that I was not aware of was the ability to download and edit files which were sent to Qik. That is great solution to gather, organize and edit contributions on group projects. Bhaskar reveals the four monetization schemes for the company. They are a subscription model, advertising, revenue share with carriers and revenue share with handset makers. --- Andy Plesser

msnbc.com Plans Hyperlocal Coverage of Election Results

www.beet.tv msnbc.com has plans for interactive coverage of voting results on a hyperlocal level, Charlie Tillinghast, president and publisher told Kelsey earlier today in this interview. Visitors to the site's national map will be able to see results for both states and individual counties on election night. Not just the data for political insiders, understanding how voting is tallied on a local basis is going to be of interest to a national and local audience who want to understand the process. In addition to the map, msnbc.com will have live video streams of national coverage from NBC News and local coverage in swing states from NBC affiliates. Charlie was the host of today's Beet.TV Online Video Roundtable moderated by Dan Farber, editor-in-chief of CNET News.com and Erick Schonfeld, co-editor of TechCrunch. Special thanks to Charlie and the team at msnbc.com for hosting our event. Here's a quick summary of the event on Portfolio.com. Brightcove, Delve See Fast Growth and Profitability From ...

From www.beet.tv For both Brightcove, the Boston-based video services company and Delve Networks, a competing start-up player in Seattle, the fastest growth in their business is coming from non-media customers such as businesses and universities who want to use video for marketing and other purposes. In San Francisco in March, at the Beet.TV Online Video Roundtable, Jeff Whatcott, Brightcove's head of marketing said that non-media customers is the biggest and fastest growing sector. Alex Castro, CEO of Delve said that even if online video advertising "went to zero" his company will continue to do well. While much of the video content sector is concerned about advertising revenue, the service providers are doing well as video permeates the Web --- and way beyond media sites. Co-moderating the roundtable was Liz Gannes, editor of NewTeeVee. Andy Plesser, Executive Producer

Bill Joll H.264

High Def Video in Focus as Adobe and On2 Encode Files to H.264 Standard Adobe's announcement today that it will encode video, not just to the Web video "standard" of Flash, but will also provide encoding to the conventional broadcast standard of H.264, means that video created by small and large content developers will look great on many devices, notably on television sets. Here's a report on this by Liz Gannes over at NewTeeVee. Here's the take by Adobe "evangelist" Ryan Stewart. Last week, On2 Technologies, a company that provides video encoding, announced it would provide encoding for H.264. CEO Bill Joll visited with us last week to explain the importance of encoding to H.264 and the plans for his company to make this part of its encoding software and by embedding chips in set top boxes and mobile devices with the new codec. -- Andy Plesser Coming Clean: On2 is a former public relations client of Plesser Holland. JP Gownder PC video capacity

Forrester Analyst Sees Higher Quality Pervading User Generated Video Higher quality user generated video is inevitable, Forrester's lead PC analyst told me a few weeks back when I was up in Cambridge. Better cameras and editing tools will make this all possible, JP Gownder explains. Yesterday, I was in San Jose for the Streaming Media West conference. The prospects for higher quality video on the computer was a topic of widespread discussion. Whether it be developments with P2P, traditional CDN's teaming with distribution players, new encoding systems and Web programs, this is all going to happen. I had the opportunity to explore this topic with executives from Adobe, Microsoft, On2 and others. We will be posting these interviews over the next few days. Here is a report from the show from Liz Gannes of NewTeeVee who moderated a panel on viral video techniques. Stay tuned. You can grab this interview with JP -- Andy Plesser Posted on Wednesday, November 07, 2007
