Sadly some animals are not as fortunate as Dustin. As long as I live I will never understand how man can hurt beautiful defenseless animals. Animals are very special. Pets provide unconditional love. I feel that they are extended members of a family. They help to make a home happy. It sickens me to know that people do not take care of them like they should or abuse them. There is absolutely no reason for an animal to end up in a shelter or even worst abandoned somewhere. People need to realize that an animal is not an object to be discarded. They are a living beautiful creature and they feel pain. They are not a possession. In many ways they are like a child. They rely on us to keep them healthy and safe. Now really how hard is that? Before getting a pet please do your research. Pets need to be vaccinated on a yearly basis. In my opinion they should not be left free to roam where they might come in contact with other animals that might be carrying diseases. May 2010 saw a group of English volunteers descend upon the Scooby shelter to volunteer in Mediterranean temperatures. Thankfully we were fortunate to have some guys in the group who started to build the much needed brick shelters to replace the old "wooden dog houses". These will provide shelter from the elements and shade from the sun for the dogs. They almost finished two "back to back" buildings and dug the footings for the next two kennels. The girls didn't take the light duties either. They were doing heavy duty poop scooping, cleaning and strimming the grass to keep the seed down to protect the dogs. In between these jobs, the ladies were feeding the dogs and administering tick and flea treatment along with copious amounts of tender loving care. We were also pleased to learn that Scooby held a fund-raising stall at a youth festival in Cuellar over the same weekend and raised a total of €500. This is fantastic because it means that Scooby had the opportunity to target the right audience in terms of education and its attempts to bring about a change of attitude towards animal welfare in Spain. Even more surprising is that locals were donating money for animals. This was unheard of when we started visiting Scooby more than 10 years ago. Luckily the food crisis at Scooby has subsided for the time being. While Scooby has enough dog food for the next 4 months, we need to keep the momentum behind the appeal for food donations. The rest are euthanized. In the United States and many other areas across the world, we are being faces with massive pet overpopulation. Ignorant and irresponsible owners are not spaying and neutering their animals, and are letting their pets have puppies or kittens. Many times it is because parents want their children to experience the birth of animals. It can feel like a beautiful experience to see a new mother cat gently licking her newborn kittens. The sad thing is, this can actually send a bad image to children. After all, I´ve never seen a case in which these newborn kittens or puppies stay with the family for long. They are all sold or given away. Does this send a good image? No, it tells children that animals are to be used by people and that they can be given away or sold for profit. Think about this: every single kitten or puppy that your pet has, another beautiful life will be euthanized at a shelter. When a breeder or regular person with an intact animal sells the kittens and puppies, they are taking away a home that an animal at an animal shelter may have taken. Cats were brought to Cyprus decades ago during a plague of snakes to keep them under control. However, the number of cats were not controlled. Now, hundreds of cats roam Cyprus have no home to go to and are sometimes neglected. This is one of the animal shelters in the centre of Paphos that has its doors open to all cats and is funded by donations and run by volunteers. While we were there, a space of 30 minutes, there were 10 new arrivals. Out of the 20 or so kittens that were there that day, only one survived, which was in fact the one we bottle fed. UPDATE: I am absolutely THRILLED to report that AJAX was adopted on July 22, 2008 by a wonderful person who saw how very special a cat AJAX is and she decided to give him (and Elmer his friend the orange kitten) a Forever Home. For our YOUTUBE friends who have been following the story of AJAX here is a quick summary: AJAX came to our NO-KILL shelter in JANUARY 2008. He always had a very pleasant disposition, sweet, playful, loves human contact, can be held, loves all other cats and he is a marvelous all white beauty. A truely stunning cat, we don't often have all white cats at Noah's Kingdom and with his wonderful personality we figured he would be adopted within a few short weeks. However, weeks passed by. Other cats got adopted. New cats came and went. Ajax stayed. He remained in his cage (as all our cats do) for most of the day with the exception of the mornings and evenings when we volunteers were there to feed and care for him. Sheriff Dart's program puts non-violent inmates to work, saves tax dollars Non-violent inmates from the Cook County Jail have started cleaning cages at the city animal shelter, providing them with work experience and saving city taxpayers thousands of dollars each year, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced Monday. The 16 inmates began work Monday at the David R. Lee Animal Center, 2741 S. Western Ave. -- marking the first time jail inmates have been assigned to carry out duties off of the jail compound. Inmates dispensed food and cleaned cages and kennel areas. They are paid $4 a day -- a little less than $1 an hour, but double the rate inmate workers usually receive at the jail. Those selected for the program are serving short sentences for non-violent charges, most for traffic-related offenses. Inmates can use the money they make from working to purchase items through the jail commissary, including snacks and toiletry items. The inmates are searched before they are escorted on a bus to be taken to the nearby animal center and they are supervised by correctional officers the entire time. They are again searched before returning to their jail cells. All inmates wear orange jump suits and conduct the work in the early-morning hours, before the facility is open to the public. The Milton Animal League has done another video - only this one is a litte different from the animal ones we have done. Many area residents know that the Milton Animal League is composed of a group of volunteers dedicated to the rescue, care, and adoption of animals in need at the Milton Animal Shelter. But what many people aren't aware of is that the 30 year-old building currently housing the shelter is so run down and so rapidly deteriorating that it is no longer able to meet the needs of the animals it shelters and the volunteers who care for them. We have therefore taken on the daunting task of securing the funds to build a new animal shelter in the Town of Milton. This video better describes the condition of our shelter and why we are asking for donations and help. We are trying to get this story as much attention as possible since the fundraising for the new shelter building has really just begun.

A shelter dog's story: Watch the story of how an ill-mannered former shelter dog, Vinny Love, transforms into a wonderful companion with talent! I didn't raise him from when he was a puppy. In fact, I know nothing of his history. He's not purebred. And he didn't have the perfect manners, in fact he had aggression issues! However, with training, he was able to transform into a great dog with wonderful manners. I see tons of awesome purebred Retrievers, German Shepherds, Australian Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, Border Collies, and Jack Russell Terriers doing stunts and obedience but Vinny and I are proof that mix-breed shelter dogs can do it too, EVEN the ones with behavior issues! Our goal through these videos is to not only showcase Vinny Love's talent, but more importantly, show the world that there are MILLIONS of remarkable animals just like Vinny being euthanized and KILLED in animal shelters worldwide. If Vinny and I have even inspired 1 person to adopt his/her next animal through our videos, we've done our job.

As some of you may know, I worked at a local animal shelter for 4 months over 2 years ago. There is a lot that went on there that I didn't openly discuss because it was difficult. Mostly because I was chosen to assist in euthanasia. And that is a hard thing to talk about. Its make even harder by the stigma many people have of it, assuming that those who euthanize animals "enjoy" it, because "anyone who loves animals wouldn't do it". Another comment made is "You are playing God"...No, when you have to euthanize animals you are FORCED to play God. Forced by irrespondsible dog owners and breeders. So most the time, I didn't discuss it. I saw the recent Oprah show about puppy mills and couldn't watch it anymore. I saw a puppy mill operation, I didn't need to see it again. But my mother kept giving me play by play and mentioned euthanasia and it kinda brought it all back to me. And last night, I felt I need to tell people about it. It was both difficult and therapeutic. But I feel necessary.
