- The anti-bullying message has hit the air waves of New York City and the tri-state area, after Long Branch Middle School "Anti-Bullying Crew" students were featured on the ABC 7 Eyewitness News on February 9, 2011. The segment highlighted their journey to New York City in the hopes that First Lady Michelle Obama would give them the chance to explain and sing their anti-bullying message to her and the world. The students braved the extreme cold Wednesday morning, leaving Long Branch at 4:00 AM for New York City. The news segment can be seen at: abclocal.go.com The students waited outside NBC Studios, where the Today Show tapes, for three hours with their hand painted signs in hand, hoping to catch her eye. Some came to this country to work in the cotton fields, on the levees, or on the railroads, but quickly moved to small grocery stores, especially in the Delta. At first, they were barred from the all-white public schools. But they assimilated and in town after town, high school valedictorians were often Chinese. The panel that will discuss that evolution includes: • Chat Sue of Austin, Texas, a political science professor and college administrator who was born in China and immigrated to Clarksdale. He was a student at Ole Miss in 1962, when rioting accompanied the enrollment of the university's first black student, James Meredith. • Frieda Quon of Olive Branch, a retired library science professor who is working to develop the Mississippi Delta Chinese Heritage Museum in Cleveland. The 2008 Super Tuesday Tornado Outbreak was a deadly tornado outbreak affecting the Southern United States and the lower Ohio Valley from February 5--6, 2008. In total, 82 tornadoes were confirmed. The outbreak produced several destructive tornadoes in heavily populated areas, most notably in the Memphis metropolitan area, in Jackson, Tennessee, and the northeastern end of the Nashville metropolitan area. At least 58 people were killed in the outbreak by tornadoes across four states and 18 counties, with hundreds of others injured. The outbreak was the deadliest in the US since the May 31, 1985 outbreak that killed 76 across Ohio and Pennsylvania (and also killed 12 in Ontario, Canada). It also was the deadliest tornado outbreak in both Tennessee and Kentucky since the 1974 Super Outbreak. Utah Valley University officials inked a 10-year, $250000 a year naming rights agreement this week with Utah Community Credit Union to rename the Events Center the UCCU Center. Since it opened in 1996, the 8500-seat facility has been an epicenter of cultural, athletic and business events and activities in Utah County and throughout the region. Located on UVU's panoramic frontage to Interstate 15, the UCCU Center is a high visibility destination facility in Utah County. UVU officials including President Matthew S. Holland, UCCU executives, representatives from the Utah County Commission and Orem City, and other local leaders of government and industry gathered for a brief public news conference on Monday outside the UCCU Center to announce the new partnership. "I couldn't be more delighted with this announcement," President Holland said. In addition to the new partnership being a great fit for the University and UCCU, he said the timing of the agreement couldn't have come at a more critical point when UVU is experiencing significant enrollment growth while also wrestling with decreases in state funding.
