Lothar and the hand people-space hymn
The ultimate experimental rock band of the late 60s, Lothar and the Hand People were fronted NOT by a musician, but by a musical instrument; a theremin named Lothar. The band recorded two albums, PresentingLothar and the Hand People released in 1968 and Space Hymn in 1969. One of the weirder psychedelic groups of the late '60s, the New York-based Lothar & the Hand People took special pride in augmenting many of their tunes with the theremin, a then-futuristic instrument most famous for its use in horror movies (as well as the Beach Boys' "Good Vibrations"). Playing eccentric satirical rock, good-time folk-rock, and experimental psychedelia, their material wasn't nearly strong enough to elevate them to the rank of innovators. Although their first album is their best, they are most fondly remembered for the trance-inducing "Space Hymn," an FM radio favorite for many years.

Lothar Meid Interviews - Episode 1 (1/2) - Jamming with Jimi Hendrix (1/2)
In episode 1 of the "Lothar Meid Interviews" series, Lothar recalls the events that led to him jamming with Jimi Hendrix and Mitch Mitchell at the Big Apple club in Munich, Germany during the early afternoon of November 8th 1966...Part 1 of 2 Lothar Meid is best-known for his bass playing in Krautrock legend Amon Düül II, which he joined in 1971 and stayed until about 1975. He was also the co-founder of the group Embryo along with Christian Burchard in 1969. In the late Seventies until the mid Eighties, he produced and played with Marius Müller Westernhagen, gaining super-stardom in Germany. Lothar started his career in the late 50ties playing double bass in jazz bands around Munich, Germany. He was then one of the first electric bassists in Germany and became a well booked player in many soul bands in clubs like the Tabarin, or PN in Munich. He played in the first line-up of Doldinger´s Passport teaming up with Udo Lindenberg on drums. Throughout his career, he also regularly worked as a studio musician, as a result of which he is playing on almost every 70ties pop hit from Germany you could imagine, be it Boney M, Peter Maffay, or Rex Gildo. If you have ever heard the original soundtrack of "Tatort", you have heard Lothar Meid on bass....

Lothar Herbert Matthäus (21 March 1961, Erlangen, West Germany) was named in 1990 European Footballer of the Year and World Soccer Player of the Year after captaining West Germany to victory in the 1990 World Cup. One year later, he was also named the first ever FIFA World Player of the Year. He has played in five World Cups (1982, 1986, 1990, 1994, 1998) more than any other outfield player, and holds the record for the most World Cup matches played (25 games). He also won Euro 80, and played in Euro 84, Euro 88, and Euro 2000. In 1999, he was again voted German Footballer of the Year despite being 38 years old. He is the most capped German player of all time, retiring with a total of 150 appearances (83 of them when the team was called West Germany) and 23 goals for the German national team. Matthäus is a member of the FIFA 100 -- a list of 125 of the greatest living football players chosen by Pelé.

"On zero you go twice as deep." Part guided meditation, part techno-rock anthem, Lothar and the Hand Peoples' underground classic Space Hymn (Capitol Records, 1969) conflates the political and the psychedelic. The first band to perform and record with the theremin and Moog synthesizer, Lothar released two albums with Capitol Records before breaking up in the early 1970s. Their gig list includes venues with Jimi Hendrix, The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, The Byrds, Lovin Spoonful, Canned Heat, and others. Recent collaborators include the Chemical Brothers who sampled a Lothar track on their platinum-selling album Dig Your Own Hole. The music video incorporates found footage from the 1930s & 40s including 16mm family movies and Castle Film newsreel clips of World War II. ("The song Space Hymn is the greatest.
