I thought I'd add yet another superb "unreleased" (in HD 1080p) video and track from the amazing "Velvelettes" back in April/July 1966 intended for Motown's VIP label, but at the time added to the thousands in the "Vaults" sadly! What a shame that this great sound was never heard, don't you think? It's a bit better in HD of course, so I'll make future ones in this 1080p format. Vocals are credited to Ida Sue McCune and the orchestral arrangement, Billy May. The one Bernadette Peters lip-synced to and probably my favorite from the soundtrack. This was a sealed 2-LP set I won on eBay for maybe $2.00. It has been out of print since it's original release.

'Pennies From Heaven' by Dennis Potter. Episode 3: 'Easy Come, Easy Go'. Eileen (Cheryl Campbell) is pregnant and forced to leave her post as an infant teacher. Unaware of her misery, the children snigger as she tells them the story of Rapunzel. How does she come to have twins when she's not married? Instead of responding 'normally' to her scolds, the whole class turns into a toy dance-band, soothing fears, syncopating terrors. Whatever's wrong, love will cure. The children's dancing and straight to camera gestures give a perfect backdrop to Campbell's lip-synched lyrics and syncopated dance routine. The scene was shot on location in Potter's home county of the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire with the subtle texture of 16mm film. The school is the actual Forest school Potter attended and many of the local children were cast as extras. The children's toy 1930s dance-band and cheeky choreography add to the fairytale feel of this delightful musical number. Music: 'Love Is Good For Anything That Ails You'. Orlando and his Orchestra. The full title is "Love is Good For Anything That Ails You" Classic British dance tune from the mid 1930s. This number has become a signature tune for Carla Normand and the Royal Society Jazz Orchestra. A personal note: The Gleneagles Resort Hotel and Golf Club, in Scotland, is famous as one of the world's first "destination resorts". It hosted Bush and the G-8 summit a couple of years ago. It was created in 1919 by Scottish Railways in order to lure tourism and rail service (there's a station on the grounds). Part of the land it currently occupies was farmed by my great-grandfather until he died in a farming accident in 1884, leaving his widow and children to emigrate to America. The 17th C stone farmhouse of 'Middle Third' still stands and is independent of the hotel property. Some years ago I purchased a CD compilation of British dance bands, and lo and behold, there was a track with this song, performed in 1936 by 'The Gleneagles Hotel Orchestra'. I was thrilled! -- but I already knew this song from Royal Society Jazz Orchestra.
