Over 510000 pumps have been sold in the rural areas of the Eastern part of India, bringing substantial benefits to farming families. Many farmers in the plains of the North and East of India rely on a single annual crop such as wheat or maize, watered by the monsoon. The income which they derive is small, and this forces many to seek casual work in cities such as Lucknow for part of the year, often disrupting children's education since the whole family moves to the city. The water table in the region is consistently high, so out-of-season crops can be grown under irrigation if a pump is available. Affluent farmers can afford to buy and operate diesel pumps. Poorer farmers may also hire diesel pumps, but often at very high cost. IDEI commercialised low-cost treadle pumps for irrigation. The pumps are designed to be simple for people of all ages to operate, and most members of a household, including children, can take part. Typically, the household will pump for two to eight hours a day. Poor farmers can now cultivate and sell a variety of crops outside the normal growing season and bring additional land under cultivation because it can be irrigated. The increase in ...

Low-cost Mazzei Injector System for Irrigation System

www.TeraGanix.com Mazzei® makes a venturi injector system that threads into irrigation lines. They have no moving parts and require no electricity. They also cost a fraction of what an electronic injection pump would cost. The drawback is that they are not accurate to the point of giving you the ability to dial in the exact amount of product you want to inject. However, for irrigation purposes, you don't have to be dead on accurate. The system shows a ball valve and a bypass loop. By adjusting the amount of open space in the ball valve, you can force more pressure through the Mazzei®. The force of the water passing over the inlet will cause a suction and suck in whatever the inlet is connected to. So the system runs by flow only. Here we have a 1 poly tub going into a 5-gallon container of Activated EM1®. The water and Activated EM•1® flow into the lower fields of the farm through the drip tape in the beds, which also go into the chicken area.

Windmill powered rope pump in Nicaragua

An innovative low-cost windmill for water pumping used in Nicaragua for small-scale irrigation, cattle watering and domestic use. The design is based on a Dutch model developed by CWD consultancy wind energy developing countries. The windmill drives a rope pump, similar to the hand rope pump of which 70.000 are installed in Nicaragua. Of the wind rope pump, up to now, 400 have been installed, produced by the enterprise AMEC in Managua. The technology was transferred from the Netherlands to Nicaragua through Dutch development aid, funded by the development agencies SNV and ICCO. More information: www.ropepumps.org and www.arakis.nl. Texas Instruments India TI MCU Design Contest 2012 Microcontrollers New Wonder Automated Wireless Drip Irrigation System

In the field of agriculture, use of proper method of irrigation is important and it is well known that irrigation by drip is very economical and efficient. In the conventional drip irrigation system, the farmer has to keep watch on irrigation timetable, which is different for different crops. The project makes the irrigation automated. With the use of low cost sensors and the simple circuitry makes this project a low cost product, which can be bought even by a poor farmer. This project is best suited for places where water source is limited and has to be used in limited quantity.

An End to Drudgery: Drip in Myanmar

Back in 2008, after two years of on-farm demonstration and research, Proximity Designs added a low pressure drip irrigation set to its Yetagon line of low-cost irrigation products. Proven to dramatically increase yields and water use efficiency, while reducing disease and labour costs, drip irrigation has revolutionised crop production in many developed nations. Most farmers in Myanmar and elsewhere in the developing world however, cannot afford expensive imported drip systems, nor the mechanised pump required to operate them. For drip to succeed here, we had to do something radically different. Dr Brent Rowell and Ms Mar Lar Soe talk about how the Proximity drip system was designed for very low pressures from gravity alone, and how this simple, but life-changing technology is being made more accessible to even the poorest of farmers. Find out more about Proximity Designs' work in Myanmar at www.proximitydesigns.com and www.proximitydesigns.squarespace.com. Follow us on Twitter and Facebook for recent updates.

Green, free irrigation system at the mini farm

This is an idea I came up with that Hank utilized at the mini farm. We bought some used but cleaned food grade barrels at the local salvage for 14.99 each. We then devised a mating to the gutter that existed before of pvc pipe and widened the hole. Mine has different mods and uses a little bit different equipment but is very similar. I use a conduit running from an untouched gutter that fills mine at a lower elevation but is still high enough to provide flow. Luckily I have private access over a good creek and can get water this way as well. My fruit plantation is also not as water dependent due to its proximity to the creek. Figs require very little water and are very resilient. Hank mated drip lines to the renewable clean water collectors and uses them to drip on the more sensitive plants. This also bypasses the watering restrictions because that water belongs to US and is thus null to any law. This low cost solution is low tech but high value at the organic mini farm. Thanks to all our subscribers for your support, and we will have more for you soon! Save Water with Drip Irrigation 215 651 8329 Report Video

www.seedlingsrus.com 215 651 8329 Use our drip irrigation to save water when watering trees and plants. We can install or you can see it is as easy to put together as Lego's. Water is a critical component of photosynthesis, the process by which plants manufacture their own food from carbon dioxide and water in the presence of light. Water is one of the many factors that can limit plant growth. Other important factors include nutrients, temperature, and amount and duration light. Plants take in carbon dioxide through their stomata--microscopic openings on the undersides of leaves. Water is also lost through the stomata in the process called transpiration. Transpiration, along with evaporation from the soil surface, accounts for the moisture lost from the soil. When there is a lack of water in the plant tissue, the stomata close to try to limit water loss. Wilting occurs when the tissues lose too much water. Plants adapted to dry conditions have developed numerous mechanisms for reducing water loss, including narrow leaves, hairy leaves, and thick fleshy stems and leaves. Pines, hemlocks, and junipers are also well adapted to survive extended periods of dry conditions which they encounter each winter when the frozen soil prevents the uptake of water. Cacti, with leaves reduced to spines and having thick stems, are the best example of plants well adapted to extremely dry environments. A Better Harvest

The Challenge * Roughly 100 million smallholder farmers in India live on less than $1 a day and 500 million are part of small farmer families. This represents more than 30% of the world's extreme poor. * Modern irrigation technologies have catered to large farmers with fields of four hectares or larger, with no affordable solution for small farmers. * India is a water-scarce country, accounting for 16% of the world's human population but less than 4% of the world's water resources. The share of water available for agriculture is declining fast and small landholders are the first to be affected by these water shortages. The Innovation * Building on more than 20 years of innovation, the promoters of GEWP have approached product design by placing smallholder farmers at the core of the design process from the outset, ensuring affordability and applicability. * KB Drip is a product offered by GEWP. Low-cost drip irrigation saving both water and money yielding substantial increases in harvests. * GEWP's distribution strategy leverages market forces by relying on existing small-scale manufacturers and a network of private local dealers to reach its target customers in rural India. The Impact * Recent studies have shown that GEWP's products raise the income of its small-scale farming customers by an average of $400/year. This is done through water savings (30-50%), energy savings (50%) and increased crop yields (30-70%). * In 2003 Acumen Fund invested in GEWP's parent ...
