Aircraft: D-AIHF (Luebeck) Lufthansa flight LH505 take-off in Sao Paulo Guarulhos in stormy conditions, the crew needed to remain seated for about 70 minutes after take-off until cabin service could begin due to multiple weather cells. We diverted south from the standard routing direction to Rio de Janeiro to avoid the worst thunderstorm cells, then turned back north toward direct Belo Horizonte. Crossing the North Atlantic on NAT tracks has aircraft in the same direction separated by 1000' instead of the usual 2000' which makes for some great views. We were at Flight Level 310 and travelling at mach 0.84 only about 10-15kts faster than the MD11 which I guess was flying at 0.82. Unfortunately they didn't have cameras. The new Queen of the Skies has arrived in Frankfurt. On May 2nd, 2012, Lufthansa became the first airline in the world to take delivery of a Boeing 747-8. After the handover at Boeing's manufacturing facility in Everett, Washington, the new "Jumbo" with the registration D-ABYA performed a touch and go at Hamburg Airport, where Lufthansa Technik is based, before flying on to its future home base in Frankfurt, where it landed safely. The Boeing 707 launched a new revaluation in air travel, it crossed the North Atlantic in half of the time, and opened the era of jet aircraft. Lufthansa entered the jet era in 1960 with Boeing 707-430 named "Oscar-Bravo" and began it's jet journey from there. The Boeing 707 opened new frontiers for Lufthansa, and in 1962 Lufthansa carried twice as many passengers then ever before. In 1964 Lufthansa added Boeing 727 to it's fleet, and was the first airline to operate 727 in Europe. In 1967 Boeing introduced its new Model, the Boeing 737-100 and in mid 60s Lufthansa received its first deliveries. Lufthansa operated, and still operates the Boeing 737 in its fleet. In 1970 Boeing made a international sensation with the Boeing 747-200, and Lufthansa placed orders on this Jumbo jet. Lufthansa has upgraded its first class on the B747 with BOTH a bed and a seat. Only the B747 has this; not even the A380 has both. The A380 only has a seat that turns into a bed. But on the Boeing 747 service, you get both a bed and a seat. The beauty of the bed is that when you turn on your side, you can look directly out the window and see the sky! It is pretty incredible. Most first class seats, when you lay flat, you only see plastic—the head is shielded so you don't see anything. But with the B747 LH first, you turn your head and you're looking straight out the window! My company paid for a business class ticket, and I upgraded to first using miles. I hope you enjoy it!
