Remembering Sidney Lumet: his advice to aspiring directors - EMMYTVLEGENDS.ORG

From his 1999 Archive of American Television interview. See Sidney Lumet's full interview at emmytvlegends.org Full interview description: Sidney Lumet was interviewed for three-hours in New York, NY. Mr. Lumet spoke of his work as an actor on the stage before he became a director in television. He recalled his work on the television series Danger(1950-55), and You Are There(1953-57) both "live" dramatic shows of the time. He discussed the use of blacklisted writers on these shows and how the material they wrote often reflected the era of McCarthyism. He also discussed other television dramatic anthology series he directed for including Omnibus, Goodyear Playhouse, The Alcoa Hour, Studio One, and Kraft Television Theatre. He described his direction of the well-known television special The Sacco-Vanzetti Story and The Play of the Week: "The Iceman Cometh" both of which aired in 1960. He spoke of his transition to a feature film director with "12 Angry Men" in 1957 and his work on such other feature films as the Paddy Chayefsky's satire, "Network" (1976). The interview was conducted by Dr. Ralph Engleman on October 28, 1999.

Sidney Lumet: Writing a Compelling Script

Show notes: Sidney Lumet in his book "Making Movies" Making Movies describes one reason he decides not to produce a script is, the writer has written an autobiographical peace that Sidney Lumet suspects is far more interesting to the writer than to anyone else. People, writers, have a bias to writing about their own lives. Simply because we have been through the experience, a description of that experience is going to evoke far more emotion from us than from people who have not, been through that experience. We are blind to what in our writing compels us, alone. Writing about personal experience increases the likelihood of this happening. What can we do about it? First, try to become aware of what in your writing will only have meaning to you, but not necessary others. Write for the person who knows nothing about what you are writing about, write to that person. When using real life experiences to create fiction the process will cut the wheat germ from the chaff and separate out the interesting from the uninteresting. These days it's more important for writers, storytellers, than ever to write to compel their reader. You must keep their interest. After writing something leave it alone for a few months and when you reread it, it will be easier the get an outside view of it and see what is interesting others and what is not.

Sidney Lumet In Memorial - A Lifetime of Acehivement

This is a Genuine G-Shot in memory of Sidney Lumet memorial producer director of many of our greatest films. (From the UK Guardian) Cornelia Sharpe and Al Pacino in the 1973 police thriller Serpico, directed by Sidney Lumet. Photograph: Sportsphoto Ltd/Allstar/Paramount Sidney Lumet, who has died aged 86, achieved critical and commercial success with his first film, 12 Angry Men (1957), which established his credentials as a liberal director who was sympathetic to actors, loved words and worked quickly. For the bulk of his career, he averaged a film a year, earning four Oscar nominations along the way for best director, for 12 Angry Men, Dog Day Afternoon (1975), Network (1976) and The Verdict (1982). It is arguable that, had he not been so prolific, Lumet's critical reputation would have been greater. Certainly, for every worthwhile film there was a dud, and occasionally a disaster, to match it. But Lumet loved to direct and he was greatly esteemed by the many actors -- notably Al Pacino and Sean Connery -- with whom he established a lasting rapport. The majority of his films were shot not in Hollywood, but in and around New York. Lumet's book Making Movies (1995), a lucid account of all aspects of the film business, used his own works for textual analysis and included a coda, almost a lament, in which he railed against the studios' interference. He had become increasingly aware that there was little space, even in his beloved New York, for works inspired by social <b>...</b>
