The Telemark opens the SEMblance model to have patch points, allowing you to integrate it with other synth gear easily. You can process external sounds with the Telemark too. The Machinedrum has some fast LFO speeds, but the slowest goes 4 bars maximum. Here's a trick to make it go much slower than that for longer, evolving sound creation. Getting past the 4-bar limit can help to make patterns feel looser and breathe more. This trick can be adapted to the Monomachine and probably to many other synths that have more than one LFO and the ability to modulate LFO speed. Here are the basics of turning an old record into derivative rhythmic ambience.
Using the Machinedrum to drive a Korg MS10 1. Set up a GND-IMP machine and a GND-SIN machine, in global setting route each of these to their own output - I used E and F in this example. 2. For the GND-IMP machine set it UP to 0, UVAL to 0, DOWN to 64 and DVAL to 127, set the track level and volume to maximum. This will be your trigger pulse, so connect a lead from the output you assigned this machine to into the MS10 trigger input. (output E in my case) 3. For the GND-SIN set it at maximum level and volume, also turn DIST in the routing page fully up (127), set the RAMP and RDEC to zero. This will be your pitch control, route it from its output on the MD you selected earlier into the VCO CV input. (output F in my case) 4. Select accent track and set it to max for all steps and all tracks, it is important that you do this or it won't work as the accent boosts the juice a bit. 5. Program some triggers for the IMP machine, then place triggers on the same steps for the SIN machine, using parameter locks on the PTCH control you can change the pitch played by the MS10, experiment with different envelope settings on the MS and different triggers for the IMP and SIN machines. As you can tell from the video, there are a few limitations with this technique, first the pitch is not linear and does not act as anything like normal scaling, second on the MS10 you get some bleed though of the SIN sound. If you are electronically minded it should be feasable to build a little circuit to <b>...</b>

Not just an IDM machine, the Machinedrum can do much more. Here the MD gets some industrial treatment. Free samples info at the end. This started out as a challenge project - to build a drumkit from only the simplest machines. I especially wanted to see if I could get more sounds out of GND-IMP, which is rarely used solo. I ended up being able to do most of the kit with GND-IMP. Thanks to all of the people who watched the previous version of this video without the subtitles.

Here's some ways to make a variety of phase-related changes to a sample using the MachineDrum. You can make classic phaser/flanger sounds, but also a distorto-phaser and other effects. The basic idea can be used with all kind of other variations such as filter sweeps, panning, reverb+delay, and so on. In the video, I used a basic sound and a simple stripped-down progression on purpose so that the changes can be heard more clearly. This is not a musical statement--just a guide to using the gear to make some effects, some of which are a bit out of the ordinary. Have fun. HD version available so you can see the screen.

Hi Folks, Its been a while since my last live session so I thought that I'd better get one up and this time instead of the Roland MC-909 I am using the machinedrum & virus. So here we have a Minimal Techno House live improv using Elektron Machinedrum SPS-1 MK2, Access Virus C, Korg Micro Kontrol, Korg Kaoss Pad 3 and Logic Studio Pro 8. This was recorded in one take and is a little rough around the edges but when considering that I was quite happy with the end result. The Machinedrum is used for the drums and is sequencing itself, Logic Studio Pro is used for recording and sequencing the Virus C (controlled via micro kontrol) and for sending out the midi clock to both units. The GND IMP machine on the Machinedrum does more than snap, crackle, pop - it does basslines. Won't sound exactly like a 303 but you can get some great sounds nonetheless.

Using an LFO to make semi-random ghost snare hits adding life to an otherwise static pattern. This technique can be used to add subtle "imperfections" to any track. You could apply the technique to an entire hi-hat track to add life to it as if you played it on a velocity-sensitive controller pad. In Ableton Live I often add this type of effect to a snare track giving the snare a slightly different attack on each hit, as if a real drummer played it. You can also tweak the filter slightly to mimic the location of the hit on the drum varying. The Machinedrum is an amazing instrument and the ability to add subtle tweaks like this can make your drum tracks that much more interesting. Regarding the video: the text is most readable if watching in high-quality mode. Sorry for the blur but it's higher quality in high-quality mode as well ;-)

While its distant rudeboy bass is somewhere between Reese and vintage El-B, its dainty chords and cinematic strings makes us think of the Jazzanova/Compost set in techno mode. 2:24 it's awful short, and an extended dub for the DJs would've been welcome, but fair play, it makes its point with impressive economy and will nice up the dance regardless.
