AE Paterra ::: Synthesizers, percussion Temporary Residence (2009) Pitchfork's review: If you're at all familiar with the cinematic Goblin-meets-2112 pomp and grandeur of Zombi, then the news that one-half of the group (drummer AE Paterra recording as Majeure) is releasing a three-track double LP (Timespan) with cover art straight from a twenty-year-old copy of Omni shouldn't come as a surprise-- if anything, Paterra's probably taking his art cues from his partner in crime. What might surprise about "Teleforce", the third of Timespan that's been made public, is its directness. Sure, the glistening arpeggiating synths that run rampant over "Teleforce" bring to mind all sorts of groovy planetarium laser-light-show experiences either shared or shunned, along with beloved 1970s horror/80s sci-fi movie soundtracks-- that bit's not much different from what's offered via Paterra's day job. But where Zombi would tend to take the scenic route while navigating a track, Majeure take a direct and decidedly more disco-flavored path. There's more than a little Moroder or "Miami Vice"-flavored Jan Hammer in the peaks and valleys of these sine waves, and Paterra's brisk yet steady (and decidedly Peart-free) drumming lets those signals run wild to great effect. Befitting a tune that'll encompass an entire side of vinyl, "Teleforce" is on the heavy side of nine minutes, but damn if it doesn't seem to pass by in a third of the time. For folks <b>...</b>
