Why have free markets failed so many people? How could the power of free markets be harnessed to solve social problems of poverty, hunger, inequality and the like? The solution, according to Professor Muhammad Yunus, founder of Grameen Bank, is recognizing the fact that human beings are inherently multi-dimensional in nature and may not solely be concerned with the pursuit of maximum profit. They may also be interested in a new type of business, called social business, dedicated to solving social and environmental problems. The idea of social business did not arise in a vacuum. It grew out of Professor Yunuss life-long experience on the frontlines of the battle against poverty, first in Bangladesh and later in countries around the world. Professor Yunuss vision is to inspire young people all around the world and particularly in rich countries to make a difference by embracing the concept of social business. This lecture was the Spring Public Affairs Convocation Lecture at Missouri State University. Professor Muhammad Yunus established the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh. His objective was to help poor people escape from poverty by providing loans without collateral to support income generating activities. Many Obama supporters have claimed to debunk the video by pointing out that the events were not comparable. They argue that the event in Anbar province that President Bush attended in September 2007 was informal. The Camp Lejune event that President Obama attended, on the other hand, was more formal. They point out that it is not fair to compare two events in which the Marines are subject to different rules of behavior. In fairness, they are correct. The events were different in many ways and the Marines present were subject to different behavioral expectations. There is, however, more to this video than that. If the content of this video were that easily debunked it would not still be drawing tens of thousands of hits per day. The different degrees of formality aside, this video is quite revealing. In the video, the Marines exhibit obvious love and respect for President Bush. His visit was not an event that followed closely on the heels of 9/11. This video was taken after the worst days of the war and after the surge created major progress in the region. Euronews' Alex Taylor speaks to Doctor Bernard Devalois, Head of the Palliative Care Unit at the Hospital of Pontoise in France, putting forward your questions on I-talk. The first question comes from Alexandre from France: "As a Frenchman, I'm asking the question because there are a lot of discussions in France on whether we should allow assisted suicide, and the similarity between suicide and assisted suicide, and no law has been passed, either in France or Europe to harmonise the rules. I will never forget Lilly's brave sacrifice and her action has spurred me to advocate on behalf of Pit Bulls to begin chipping away at the myth that these dogs are inherently violent. Lilly has shown the true nature of pit bulls and I want the world to know that hundreds and hundreds of pit bulls languish in animal shelters because people are too scared to adopt them. I've started a fund that I hope will make a difference in the lives of these dogs. This is a classic middle eastern salad, traditionally served as part of the mezze, which is kind of like tapas in Spain or "drinkin' snacks" in my house. hilahcooking.com TABOULI INGREDIENTS * 1 cup medium-grind bulghur (might be labeled as #2 grade) * 1 cup boiling water * 1 cup each diced tomato and cucumber * 1 cup diced onion (soak in ice water to crisp it and mellow it) or green onions (don't need to soak those) * 1 cup chopped parsley * 1/4 cup chopped mint (or cilantro or dill if mint isn't available) DRESSING: * 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice * 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil (it really does make a difference in this case) * 1 clove garlic, minced * 1 teaspoon each salt and pepper Mix the bulghur and water in a bowl and cover. Let it sit about 15 minutes, or as long as it takes you to cut up everything. Cut up everything. Mix the dressing ingredients together. Mix the bulghur and vegetables and herbs. Pour the dressing over it all and mix well. Let it sit about an hour for flavors to blend. Eat it.
