How to Make a Blue Copper Solution from Pennies


You can easily make a solution of Cu+2 ions at home by oxidizing pennies with hydrogen peroxide and vinegar (acetic acid). The redox reaction that occurs is: Cu(s) + H2O2(aq) + 2 H+(aq) = Cu2+(aq) + 2 H2O(l). The bubbles that form consist of oxygen gas from the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide catalyzed by the copper ions: : 2H2O2 = 2H2O + O2. If you let the solution sit for a week or so, the water will evaporate and you will be left with blue copper acetate crystals. Or, you can drop a piece of iron metal in the solution, which will then become plated with copper. Iron is above copper on the metal activity series, so the iron atoms will replace the copper ions in the solution according to the reaction: Fe(s) + Cu+2(aq) = Fe+2(aq) + Cu(s). Other metals that will become copper plated include: lead, zinc, aluminum, and magnesium. You can try using vinegar and hydrogen peroxide to oxidize other metals, such as nickel or iron. Nickel ions create a blue solution. Iron(II) ions, which you can make from oxidizing clean iron metal, will create a pale green or yellow solution. Iron(III) ions, which you can make from oxidizing rusty iron metal, will create a deep red solution. Metal acetate solutions can also be used for electroplating.

A proper chlorine bomb not just some anti-freeze mixed inside a bottle with calcium hypochlorite (such a primitive and ineffective way of producing explosions). This is actually a way of harnessing the awesome oxidizing effects of pool chlorine. This is really quick cheap and easy way of making something similar to many other rapidly burning mixtures, and I can assure you that EVERYONE can do it. As far as I know nearly no one else has actually discovered how to use Ca(ClO)2 as an oxidizer. Most people try to mix it with sugar like it's KNO3. When watching the video you will hear me say that the dry solution burns almost twice as fast as the damp solution. Well, after numerous testing and averaging the optimum solution of half damp, half dry, actually burns just over 3 times faster. Fats are broken down to fatty acids and glycerol by enzymes known as lipases. One of these, hormone sensitive triacylglycerol lipase, is the only regulated enzyme of fat or fatty acid breakdown. It is located in fat-storing cells called adipocytes. 2. Triacylglycerol lipase action cleaves the first fatty acid off of a fat and this step is necessary before the other lipase can act to remove the other fatty acids from a fat. 3. Glycerol, is the only part of a fat that can be made into glucose (via gluconeogenesis). Fatty acids travel in the bloodstream carried by serum albumin. 4. Fatty acid oxidation occurs in the matrix of the mitochondrion. In the cell, fatty acids are attached to CoA and then at the mitochondrion, the CoA is replaced by carnitine. Inside the mitochondrial matrix, the carnitine is replace by CoA again. 5. Steps in fatty acid oxidation include dehydrogenation, hydration, oxidation, and thiolytic cleavage. The dehydrogenation and oxidation reactions yield reduced electron carriers (FADH2 and NADH). The double bond formed in the first dehydrogenation reaction is in the trans form. Make Potassium Permanganate (sort of...)


We make potassium permanganate from the potassium nitrate and manganese dioxide we obtained in previous videos. Warning: This experiment deals with very high temperatures in glass equipment. Face shields and protection against shattering glass is required. In addition small quantities of toxic gases are produced. This experiment should be performed outside or in a fume hood. Make a vial with a mixture of 7 grams of potassium nitrate and 1 gram of manganese dioxide. Using a torch carefully heat the mixture so they melt together. Smoke and fumes should be liberated as the potassium nitrate oxidizes any contaminants in the manganese dioxide. Keep the mixture molten for a few minutes. Now add 2 grams of potassium hydroxide and heat the mixture again thoroughly. It will boil and turn green as the reactants generate potassium manganate. Keep it on a gentle boil for several minutes. Let the vial cool and then smash it apart with a hammer. Obtain the green solid and pulverize it into a powder. Mix this powder with 50 mL of water and dissolve the green potassium manganate. Let it settle and then pour off the solution. The solution can be converted to potassium permanganate by adding drops of either sulfuric acid or sodium bicarbonate. Just keep adding and stirring until the solution turns purple. If you go too far it will turn light pink indicating the permanganate has been destroyed. Make Manganese Dioxide Electrodes (for chlorate or HHO cells)


How to make Manganese Dioxide Electrodes that can be used for chlorate cells or HHO cells and a few other electrochemical processes requiring inert anodes in oxidizing solutions. Make the electrode is fairly simple. First a titanium strip is sanded to give a clean surface and then etched with hydrochloric acid to activate it. Cobalt nitrate solution is applied in a thin layer and then heated to 300 Celsius to decompose (pyrolyze) the cobalt nitrate into cobalt oxide. the loosely adhering cobalt oxide is washed off and then new layers of cobalt oxide are applied. Usually between 3 to 10 layers. Then manganese nitrate is applied and the process repeated to make manganese dioxide. Another 10 to 50 layers may be applied. Optionally, a further layer of manganese nitrate by electrolysis may be applied by using the electrode as an anode in a solution of 90 grams manganese sulfate, 500mL water and 12mL concentrated sulfuric acid. Copper or titanium is used as the cathode and a current density of about 10ma per square centimeter is used. A short run time of a few minutes or so puts a thin layer of manganese dioxide on the surface that seems to reduce permanganate production, but does not eliminate it. In the future i'll be working on a lead dioxide electrode.

How to make Copper(I)Chloride - CuCl


In this video i will show you how to make the chemical Copper(I)Chloride, which is a salt of copper. The chemical is almost insoluble in both water and ethanol, and will collect under a layer of water, since CuCl is much denser than water. The powder is white and burns with a bright blue colour. Copper(I)Chloride oxidizes fairly quickly in both water and air, but this kan be slowed down, by adding diluted hydrochloric acid. If you add concentrated HCl, the whole mixture will become a almost black liquid. If this liquid is diluted again with water (you will have to try adding water until the colour doesn't change anymore, since i don't know the ideal conc.). How to Make Aluminum Nitrate Nonahydrate


How to make aluminum nitrate nonhydrate, one of the chemicals needed to make glow in the dark powder. In an upcoming video we'll need aluminum nitrate nonahydrate. The chemical formula is Al(NO3)3.9H2O Warning: These reactions must be performed outside or in a fumehood. At first it might seem that simply mixing aluminum with nitric acid can be done. But interestingly enough, aluminum is immune to the effects of nitric acid. So in order to make aluminum nitrate a two step method is needed. First the aluminum is dissolved in concentrated hydrochloric acid. This produces a solution of aluminum trichloride. The aluminum trichloride is then reacted with an excess of nitric acid. This oxidizes the nitric acid to nitrosyl chloride gas that bubbles out of solution, leaving behind aluminum nitrate. The solution is then evaporated to obtain aluminum nitrate nonahydrate. In the winter I was able to dry it in air and get crystals. Make Iron (II) and (III) Chloride


Here I demonstrate how to make iron (II) chloride, convert it to iron (III) chloride, and then regenerate it back to iron (II) chloride. We'll be needing both of these reagents in an upcoming video. Very simply, just add some steel wool to hydrochloric acid to produce iron (II) chloride and hydrogen gas: Fe + 2HCl == FeCl2 + H2 The finer the wool, the faster the reaction will be. Iron(II) chloride is rather unstable, and will readily oxidize to iron(III) chloride if left out uncovered. This reaction requires hydrochloric acid, but even so I've heard it's extremely hard to keep iron(II) chloride for any length of time. 4FeCl2 + O2 + 4HCl == 4FeCl3 + 2H2O This reaction can be sped up greatly by introducing oxygen directly into the solution, using 3% drugstore hydrogen peroxide. Finally, iron(III) can be converted back to iron(II) by adding in some more steel wool. Over a few minutes, this causes the solution to change color from brown back to lime green.

How to make fresh Black Walnut Tincture


The music in the background is my Garageband composition from 2007. It wont be on my upcoming album but perhaps the one after that. I have about 5 really great songs from 2007-2009 that I am saving for the next album after the one I will soon be releasing on itunes. I used my ipod touch to record the video and imovie to edit. ------------------------------------------------- Black Walnut trees can be found in the eastern US and Eastern Europe. These Black Walnuts I am using are native to California. Be sure to use gloves as this stuff stains and will also stain your counter top if not careful. Black Walnut hulls were once used as ink and hair dye. The California Black Walnut was a food source for the local indigenous people centuries ago. They can be found all over Los Angeles. I have seen them on Cold Water Canyon Road and in the Hollywood Hills facing the valley. Many people in the Vally have them in their yards. From late March until late August, the nuts can be found on the trees. The nuts can be gathered from the ground to eat but when making the tincture, you want them almost ripe while still on the tree. Using a sealable jar with a spigot prevents you from having to remove the lid to pour the tincture into bottles. The more you expose the solution to oxygen, the more it will oxidize and become less effective. You may even want to make several separate jars full. I used russian vodka that was 40% alcohol. BURN STEEL WOOL


We demonstrate the simple combustive oxidation of iron by burning a common household item: Steel wool. Normally we do not think of iron as being flammable, this is because bulk iron doesn't self-sustain its burning like most flammable materials. But the strands of steel wool are thin enough with enough surface area that heat produced is self-sustaining and will continue to burn through if there is enough air present. To do this, simply pull apart and fluff up the steel wool to separate the strands. Then simply set it on fire. The steel wool should then burn flamelessly creating iron oxide. You can also use a 9-volt battery and short out the terminals across the steel wool, the resistive heating should be hot enough to start it lit.

How to Make Silver Different Colors by Electrochemical Anodizing. Without using paint you can give a silver surface various colors by anodizing it. WARNING: Anodizing solution is corrosive, so wear gloves at all times when working with it. It is also somewhat toxic, so keep it away from children and pets too. To make the solution, just mix two tablespoons of sodium hydroxide (lye) and one tablespoon of sulfur with half a cup of water (~100mL). Stir for about ten minutes until the solution turns orange. Then filter the solution to remove excess sulfur. You can get sulfur from online sources (including ebay) or from some drugstores. Sodium hydroxide is the primary component of some types of drain cleaners. But read the label carefuly, drain cleaners come in many types and alot of them don't have sodium hydroxide. You can also buy sodium hydroxide online, it's sold for making home biodiesel or homemade soap. We've had some people reporting their solution does not turn orange. Heating the solution sometimes helps. Some types of sulfur still don't react, in this case, mix together sulfur and sodium hydroxide pellets directly and then add just enough water to moisten the mixture and stir it. The higher concentration should work better. As it reacts it should heat up. Every few minutes add a little more water until all the pellets of sodium hydroxide are dissolved. Organic synthesis: benzoïc acid by partial oxidation from methyl benzene. Classic example of an organic redox reaction. Alkyl benzenes are oxidized most easily at the benzylic carbon, yielding into benzoïc acid. Only tertrairy compounds like t-butyl benzene do not undergo benzylic oxidation since there is a big sterical hinderence. Allmost any primairy or secundairy alkyl benzene could be used for this experiment. Though methyl benzene, otherwise known as toluene, is the most cheapest. The used oxidiser here is potassium permanganate, dichromates or other permanganates might give the same yields. Benzoïc acid or its salts are cheaply and easily available, so do not think that this is a way to produce them in a large scale at home or at the lab. The synthesis route is inefficiënt and gives low yields. Industrial synthesis of benzoïc acid uses air-oxygen and toluene with a cathalyst. Tolluene is flamable but allso harmfull and carcinogen at long term exposal. Potassium permanganate is harmfull, strong oxidizer, and bad for the aquatic envoirement. Waste disposal: organic, non halogenated waste. MnO2: inorganic waste, or heavy metal waste.
