Kosovo: Can You Imagine? | Boris Malagurski (2009)

BUY ON DVD: www.kosovo-film.com Director's fan page: www.facebook.com Kosovo: Can You Imagine? (Serbian: Косово: Можете ли замислити?) is a documentary film by Canadian filmmaker Boris Malagurski, about the Serbs that live in Kosovo and the lack of human rights that they have today, in the 21st century. Most of the Kosovo Serbs have been ethnically cleansed by the Albanians who make up the majority of Kosovo. Kosovo has been under UN administration since 1999 when NATO bombed Serbia for 78 days to halt a crackdown on ethnic Albanian separatism in its province of Kosovo. In the years following the war, thousands of Serbs were expelled from their homes, kidnapped and killed. Their houses, cultural and religious sites were burned and destroyed. Kosovo for the Serbs is what Jerusalem is for the Jewish people. It is the cradle of their statehood, culture and religion. Most of the important Serbian Christian Orthodox monasteries are in Kosovo. Today, Serbs still have a deep spiritual and traditional connection to Kosovo, a land which is being cleansed of everything Serbian. Most of the Kosovo Serbs are internally displaced, some of them live in small containter camps, in ghettos, all this in the heart of Europe in the 21st century. We follow the stories of several Serbs who have fell victim to a nationalist and irredentist ideology that has a goal of creating a pure Albanian state of "Kosova" ("Kosovo" in Albanian) Serbs in Kosovo have no basic human rights. You will be shocked ...

rt.com Malagurski's fan page: www.facebook.com NATO has sent more troops into Kosovo after a week of violence between ethnic Albanians and Serbs in an attempt to stop an escalation of the conflict. Serbian-Canadian film director Boris Malagurski believes this shows how deeply the alliance is concerned about the situation in the Balkans. "They are sending 550 German and 550 Austrian troops," he said. "They would not be sending troops into Kosovo if they didn't estimate that the situation could explode into a larger conflict. And considering that the international community has an interest in solving the so-called North Kosovo issue, it would not be unreasonable to suggest that they are trying to fix this issue as fast as possible. And I strongly believe that if the force is necessary to do what they have planned, they will use it." Tensions were raised last week when Kosovar police seized two crossing checkpoints to impose a ban on imports from Serbia. Border violence killed one Kosovar policeman and brought peacekeeping forces under fire. Possible negotiation between the sides, however, can hardly change anything now, Malagurski says. "Whenever the both sides are urged to negotiate, it is mostly... to get the Serbs to accept something," he said. "The Serbs has already made many concessions to the so-called Republic of Kosovo -- they've recognized their documents, the IDs, the license plates. So calling on the Albanians for negotiations is another call for Serbs to accept ...

rt.com Malagurski's fan page: www.facebook.com A NATO spokesperson has confirmed that its troops fired on Serb protesters in the Mitrovica region. According to the statement, they were responding to an attack by the crowd. Figures for the number of wounded vary, but hospital officials say at least six Serb protesters and four NATO soldiers were injured. The Alliance's representative in Kosovo, Kai Gudenoge, said Serb protesters threw pipe bombs at troops stationed along the border between Serbia and Kosovo. One soldier had to be evacuated for treatment due to the gravity of his injuries. Three others are being treated locally. The Serbian side, however, claims the attack was initiated by the KFOR peacekeepers. Eyewitnesses claim the troops fired tear gas and rubber bullets to try and disperse a crowd protesting at the Kosovar government's attempt to take over two border crossings in the north previously controlled by neighboring Serbia. According to Serb officials, at least 14 protesters were injured -- and doctors view their condition as "very serious". According to Serbian-Canadian documentary filmmaker Boris Malagursky, KFOR's efforts did not stop with rubber bullets and tear gas. "At the moment, German KFOR soldiers are putting barbed wire around entire Serbian communities, turning them essentially into ghettos," Malagursky told RT. "And the last time we saw German soldiers setting up barbed wire was during the World War II." "NATO is not really contributing to the ...

rt.com Malagurski's fan page: www.facebook.com NATO peacekeepers have used tear gas against Serb protesters in northern Kosovo. They dispersed the crowd in order to start dismantling barricades erected in a protest against deployment of customs checkpoints on the border. The tension has already spilled into violence in Kosovo, reports RT's Maria Finoshina. One Serb was gunned down and two wounded near the city of Pec in the west of the province. The shooting was done by their Albanian neighbor, she says. Meanwhile some 300 Serbs tried to prevent the Kosovo peacekeeping force (KFOR) from tearing down the barricades in Kosovo's north, but the soldiers were armed with anti-riot equipment to cordon off the barricaded area. KFOR used loudspeakers to try to convince the Serb to go home, but it failed to help. There was a lot of shouting from both parties, but otherwise the conflict was not violent. NATO soldiers fired tear gas grenades at the protesters and managed to disperse them, says AFP. RT's Maria Finoshina says it was more likely pepper spray than tear has. She adds KFOR is erecting a barbed wire fence to isolate Serbs from the barricade and threatens to use force against them. At least 100 armed transport vehicles are involved in the operation, which is aimed at removing the 16 barricades on the border. KFOR is also using a number of drones, which are circling over the area of the conflict. The actual dismantling of the barricades has not started yet and Serbs are ...

"They believe that his fate is already sealed and that there's a conviction before the trial already prepared. But there are many speculations [sic] on what's actually going to happen in The Hague Tribunal when he arrives there. There are some who say he's going to be tried together with Radovan Karadzic, that he actually even said that he'd like Vojislav Seselj, who is also in The Hague Tribunal, to defend him in front of it," Malagurski said. "But regardless of all that, I believe that Ratko Mladic is in a very bad state physically and mentally, and it's very questionable that he'll be able to participate in his own trial in normal way," he added. "I think that people in Serbia largely don't even know what the European Union is," he said. "I think the government is much keener on convincing them that this is good for them, and this is really interesting because something that is good for the people of Serbia should be felt by the people of Serbia automatically. It shouldn't take such big efforts for the government to convince them that this is the right thing for Serbia. Serbian people are definitely becoming less and less interested in EU membership, and this can be seen by the most recent polls taken. The Serbian government is much more keen on Serbia being a member of EU than the Serbian people [themselves.]" Source: Russia Today

rt.com Malagurski's fan page: www.facebook.com Serbia will have to swallow its pride and recognize Kosovo if it is to gain entry to the EU believes Serbian-Canadian film-maker Boris Malagurski. "They (the Serb leadership) will recognize Kosovo. This is the unwritten pre-requisite for joining the EU. And even though it hasn't been said directly by the EU's leaders, it has been said by lower ranking-officials, most recently from Germany," Boris Malagurski said. "The Tadic government has already done a lot in the direction of recognizing Kosovo. They've recognized documents from the so-called self-proclaimed independent republic of Kosovo. I think the recognition of Kosovo will come as the next step and sadly the people in Serbia think they are powerless to stop that," he added.

rt.com Malagurski's fan page: www.facebook.com Serbs in the North of Kosovo are acutely aware that they are in a life or death situation, stresses Boris Malagurski, a Serbian Canadian film maker who has made several documentaries on Kosovo. "The authorities of the self-proclaimed Republic of Kosovo have been trying to push Serbs out of the republic ever since they proclaimed independence," the film-maker explains, arguing that international forces in the region are simply pushing their own polices under the banner of promoting peace and stability. Malagurski told RT that "[Kosovan PM Hashim] Thaci is merely fulfilling his task and it is very naïve to think that his mentors will stop him." The current Serbian establishment is striving to gain entry to the EU and would not jeopardize that aspiration, "even if that means giving up 100000-plus Serbs left to fend for themselves in breakaway Kosovo." But today, Northern Kosovo is in turn breaking away from Albanian-run Kosovo due to the fact that "they have parallel institutions and they will not accept any independent Kosovo institutions. "De-facto it is already breaking away and this is what bothers the international community which wants Kosovo sovereignty on all of its territory," Boris Malagurski says.
