Police move in to stop Seksualiti Merdeka forum


Some 20 to 30 police personnel abruptly ended a talk last night in Kuala Lumpur, held in conjunction with the banned Seksualiti Merdeka festival. The scenes in the video were shot at the Annexe Gallery, Central Market last night. Police surrounded the annex hall and asked a small group that had gathered to disperse. The forum that was halted, was about Sexuality Rights In The Workplace, meant to discuss sexuality rights and fair employment policies across genders, and solutions towards making the workplace friendlier for people of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities. It was a private talk meant for Seksualiti Merdeka members and friends only. Seksualiti Merdeka is an annual festival celebrating human rights of people of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities. It is backed by several NGOs, including the Bar Council, Amnesty International and Suaram. The event was scheduled to be held at the Annexe Gallery of the Pasar Seni (formerly Central Market) in Kuala Lumpur from Nov 9 to 13. Yesterday, deputy inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar announced a blanket ban on the event. The event has been held since 2008 to promote better understanding of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community in the country and for the people to respect their rights. 21 arrested at anti-war vigil


The police have arrested 21 people, including Klang MP Charles Santiago and several top leaders of PSM, at an anti-war vigil at Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur. Vigil: Another 20 arrested, including 5 lawyers


For the second straight night the Brickfields police have arrested people who had gathered to show support for activist Wong Chin Huat who was arrested under the Sedition Act on Wednesday. And just like last night, 14 people were arrested again today for allegedly participating in an illegal assembly. And about two hours later, six others were also taken in, including lawyers who had come to assist those arrested earlier. The 14 - nine men and five women - included PKR Youth movement exco member Ginnie Lim, KLSCAH Youth chief Ng Chong Soon, journalist The Yi Keong, PKR party worker Chua Yee Ling and several student activists. Temple demo: Residents march with cow's head


Some 50 residents enraged with the proposed relocation of a Hindu temple to their area staged a noisy protest with a severed cow's head this afternoon. Uthaya, 108 others arrested to quash HRP rally


By about 11.45am, the crowd had swelled to a procession of about 200 moving towards the contingent police headquarters. Water cannon and other Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) trucks were seen on standby at the headquarters. Anwar Ibrahim's sodomy trial is to be heard from 2pm today, after the Kuala Lumpur High Court denied him a postponement to engage a new lead counsel this morning. Senior lawyer Sulaiman Abdullah, who is still unwell, had told Anwar to appoint a new lead counsel as he did not want to be the cause of further delays to the trial. It has already been postponed once.
