Acoustic superpickers Tim May and David Harvey brought out their personal vintage Gibson collections at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum on June 27, 2007, for a powerful demonstration of the beauty and enduring quality of these old treasures. In Chapter Five, May plays a 1920 Gibson K-4 Mandocello while Harvey on a 1918 Gibson K-1 Mandocello. The tune: "Whiskey Before Breakfast".

The music is from Mark Deutsch album " Fool " it is the second half of a piece called " Avodah!!!!! " the intent of the composition is to describe the evolution of a being that is wise enough to be a fool--a fool for something, be it art, music, science, love, a cup of coffee...; to possess a manical passion; to be unreasonable; having a beginner's mind-- sincere and unafraid " Foolish or not MD The last few lines on the composers notes Fool ...... Here is crude video of the process of modifying the guitar, into a mandocello. I opted to start with a solid instrument, i had been looking at the old archtops, and I was able to pick this up on ebay real cheap as a project guitar, it was missing a bridge, and tuners, and a large crack in the lacquer on the front. It also is all solid wood, and has maple back and sides which is the traditional wood for the mandolin family and violin family of instruments. And it also was a jumbo style which i wanted to support those .074 bass strings. I had some mess ups of course, make sure you counter sink you holes for your tuners, or you'll chip out the nice headplate you made:0!!! I used purple heart which is hard to machine anyway, to match the purple guitat tuners I had...... I had to set the tuners a little lower on the peghead to make sure I had enough string length, and I should have use dthe veener on the front as well, even though I sanded the purpleheart head plate down it wasn't quite enough so I wasn't able to get the washers <b>...</b>

Now I really want one! I am currently at mandolin symposium and I have played several cellos. My new friend Marcus let me play this one and it is my favorite so far! Sound on video is not so great and the bathroom was the only place with enough light. My wife wanted to see what i was talking about so here is what I want for my birthday honey!!
Jake Wildwood - On the Boat (mandocello improvisation)
This is just a little bit of improvisation so you all can hear this mandocello I've put together from a 1960s vintage Harmony-built archtop. And yes, that "natural reverb" is "natural reverb" and not something in the mix. This thing sounds incredible. Big, big, big tone. I never expected it out of this guitar, either, which is an all-solid birch guitar throughout with pressed back and top, rather than carved. The 26" scale gives an almost cello scale length (which is 27" I think?) and lets me get away with strings cobbled together from two medium guitar ball-end sets. This, however, means that my "A" strings are unwound. For those not in the know, mandocellos are tuned like a cello CGDA an octave below mandola, but fretted and with 8 strings like a mandolin, in 4 courses. Enjoy!

New Eastman Oval Soundhole Mandocello
Eastman mandocello, oval hole design, tuned CGCG; mixolydian theme (you've heard it here). The thing really growls! Thanks to the folks at the mandolin store (www.themandolinstore.com for this. I have been looking for a mandocello for years, and this is just the thing! I can forgive it for looking like a guitar. It's really pretty with the 504 mandolin too, more so than the f-hole design I think.
