Eastwood Airline Mandola: An Electric Instrument From A Different Era (Video)

Like the instrument equivalent of A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, the Eastwood Airline Mandola brings two historical eras together with delightful results. The mandola is an instrument that traces its roots back to medieval Europe and more, while the Airline brand and signature "map" body shape are a solidly fifties-modernist affair. The combination of the two yields an instrument that sounds as unique as it looks. In this video Owen gives the Airline Mandola a strum or two to see what its possible musical applications might be. You may not be surprised to learn that the answer is: whatever you want. What may be more surprising is the instrument's sound and build quality for it's extremely reasonable price ($299 US direct from Eastwood).

Jerusalem Ridge played on a Vintage Gibson Mandola

Recently I was allowed to spend some time with a 1924 Gibson Mandola, and what an incredible instrument it is. So I thought I would let you get some idea of the sound this vintage Gibson puts out by playing the well-known Bill Monroe tune "Jerusalem Ridge." And let me go ahead and say this for you...this ain't the way Bill or Kenny Baker played it. I took a few liberties with the tune. So enjoy!

Der Spiegel (The Mirror) Duet - Mozart on Mandola

"Der Spiegel", also known as The Mirror (or Tabletop) Duet, is attributed to Mozart, and was cleverly written to be played from one sheet of music, with the second part read upside down from the first. Here it's performed by me and my alter ego on two different mandolas, a Mid-Missouri M-16 on the left and a Big Muddy M11M on the right.

A Place in the Heart on mandola

This is one of the most stunningly beautiful pieces of music I've ever had the pleasure of hearing and learning. The first time I heard it from a recording by Scott Tichenor and Bill Crahan on the mandolincafe, I was astonished at what a moving, lyrical piece of music it was. Bill Crahan is the author of the tune and Butch Baldassari recorded it some years ago. I know it's a favorite of many mandolin players and it certainly is one of mine. After years of playing this tune for myself I finally got up the nerve to try and record my simple version. I don't get anywhere close to Scott and Butch's versions, but I'm glad I finally took the plunge. I'm playing it here on a Kimble mandola. If you don't have it already I highly recommend the Butch B. tribute cd where you can hear Scott and Bill play this tune: www.soundartrecordings.com

Lawrence Nyberg Cittern (10-string octave mandolin/mandola/bouzouki) Review

This is a 10-string mid-scale (23") octave mandolin/bouzouki, which some also call a cittern. It was built by Lawrence Nyberg (www.guitarmaker.ca), a skilled and capable luthier from British Columbia, Canada. It features Amazon Rosewood (I say "redwood" in the clip but it's just because I'm nervous...that camera thing) back and sides, a gorgeous Engelmann spruce top, and some cool and elegant features. And the sound! I've only been playing since last August so I don't do it justice, but I hope to some day. It's tuned DGDAE and sounds even better in person. THANKS, Lawrence!

My Grandfather's Clock -- Mandola comparo

OK, here is a little fun. My playing is a bit messier even than usual but I want to compare these two mandolas on a tune. The tune I picked is the famous and well-known My Grandfather's Clock by Henry Clay Work. The tune has been very well known since the 1870's, but perhaps more important is effect of the song on the type of clock it was written about -- ie, the grandfather's clock. Work named his tune after a tall standing clock owned by a person in a story he had heard -- before his song this type of clock had many names. eg, case clocks, coffin clocks, standing clocks, upright clock, long clocks, and other names. But after the song became popular these clocks all became known as Grandfather's Clocks. Work also wrote the famous song The Wreck of the old Ninety-Seven. This is the mandola comparison -- first I play the tune on a 2008 Eastman MDA-815 and then the same way on a 1915 Gibson H-1. The Eastman is a scroll style f-hole and the Gibson an A-style, oval hole. The Eastman has maple backs and sides the Gibson mahogany -- both have carved spruce tops. What do you think? BTW the comparison is not perfect as the brand of strings is not the same on both instruments -- but I'm just doing it for fun anyway.

Boys of Bluehill -- mandola and mandolin

Boys of Bluehill -- mandola & mandolin Boys of Bluehill is a pretty familiar and oft-played hornpipe -- perhaps some might say over played. This is because it is considered "easy to play" and thus is often one of the first tunes most Celtic players learn and thus some feel it is "done to death". But one of the reason you hear it so much is that it is a great tune regardless of how often it is played! And it is a great favorite for dancers too. It is often thought of as an Irish tune but I believe it came originally from Northumberland, the northern-most county of England. And of course it has many other names such as The Lads of North Tyne, or The Beaux of Oak Hill, or Mildew On My Mind and so forth. Now as for those who think the Boys Of Bluehill is so easy (it is the fiddlers saying this) -- just for fun try it in the key of D on a mandola (or vilola) you'll get a much better work out I can assure you. I am playing a mandola in this video -- and I am playing a long with a recording of the tune I made last year on the mandolin. I should have done it the other way around -- it is much harder to play in the key of D on the mandola compared to the mandolin so I had a hard time "keeping up with myself" LOL. The mandola part is an octave below the mandolin part. Played at about 150 bpm on a 2009 Eastman MDA815 mandola with D'Addario J76 strings and a Wegen TF-120 pick and a 2007 Shue X-braced A-model mandolin with D'Addario J74 strings and a Wegen TF-140 pick.

Wise Rumble on octave mandola (Open D tuning)

I keep stumbling and bumbling around (and thoroughly enjoying it) in this Open D tuning (ADAD) on this Freshwater Octave Mandola and here's another resulting song experiment. This song simply uses diads (I think they're called) on the A and A strings and on the D and D strings, with all other strings providing droning accompaniment. This song is for a fellow teacher (Matt Wise) and so is named the Wise Rumble (a variation on the practice of naming songs jigs, hornpipes, planxties, strathspeys, etc., now there is the 'rumble' as a Celtic song variation...not sure if I'm violating any Irish conventions, and if so, I'll probably hear about it). The octave mandola is a handmade instrument from Scotland, made by Dave Freshwater.

Custer's Theme Song "Gary Owen" on Mandola

Thanks to the young lady in Sweeden, Antonysson I finally got my Mandola tuned to GDGD which is what she uses for "Elmer and Holger". I love the drone sound to it and am trying to get her song down good enough to record. I may have jumped the gun a little on this song. It's a tune I love and I'm sure it would sound great on a GDGD tuned Mandola played by someone who can play better than me. Anyway, here's my attempt and I'm sure I'll keep playin' till I get it better and maybe record it again.

Maggots in the Sheep's Hide on the Mandola

This is a new tune for me that I recently learned off a great CD, "Of Wind and Water" from the late 1980's by the multi-instrumentalist, Harvey Reid. Harvey in turn claims to have learned it from a street fiddler. It is apparently an old tune of Scottish/Irish origin. I can only imagine how the unusual name came about --people often name tunes after something that happens in their life. But if care was not taken I expect that flies egg and maggots (fly larvae) could have been a problem in fresh sheeps hides in days before chemicals for curing and rapid drying procedures were available. Anyway I like the song and I have gotten used to the title! It is played here on a 1911 Gibson H1 mandola in standard tuning (CGDA) and D'Addario mandola strings.
