A big change is planned for those travelling in and around Manukau when the NZ Transport Agency's SH20-1 Manukau Extension motorway opens later this year. The new 4.5 kilometre, four-lane motorway will connect State Highway 1 with State Highway 20 and includes interchanges at SH1, Lambie Drive and Cavendish Drive. The new motorway will replace Wiri Station Road as the primary route between SH1 and SH20. Instead of having to pass through 12 sets of traffic lights, motorists will use the new motorway. The new motorway will be opened progressively in three stages. There will be some disruption to traffic on local roads as each part opens and temporary detours will be in place.

At 1129hrs on Saturday 14th April 2012, ADK's 687 and 682 depart the new Manukau station in South Auckland, becoming the first public passenger-carrying service to use the new Manukau Branch. Driver and staff training runs, using DMU's and light locomotives had been taking place since August 2011, and the official opening ceremony special had run the previous week, but this was the first service that the public could use. The pair of ADK's operated several free shuttle runs between Manukau and Puhinui between 1129 and 1400hrs for the public open day. Regular scheduled services commenced on the morning of Sunday 15th April 2012.

Police were today taking DNA swabs and fingerprints from the stolen car used in a $200000 armed robbery in South Auckland. The 1998 white Subaru WRX sedan was found late yesterday afternoon in Ryan Place, Manukau City - about 300m from the Bank of New Zealand branch where the robbery occurred on Friday night. An Armourguard driver was confronted by a balaclava-clad gunman as he prepared to load the money into a van from the BNZ on the corner of Great South Rd and Ronwood Ave. The gunman threatened the driver with a sawn-off shotgun before snatching six large money bags and escaping in the Subaru driven by an accomplice. Detective Sergeant Simon Irving, of Counties Manukau police, told the Herald the car would undergo forensic testing this morning. "It will be tested for fingerprints, swabs for DNA taken and photographed. Any objects found in it will also be examined." Police hadn't searched the car last night because the officers who recovered it were under instructions not to open it until the forensic tests could be carried out, Mr Irving said. Police were told where the car was by a resident of Ryan Place, which is semi-industrial but has some housing. Mr Irving said the robbery had been well planned and the van driver was taken by surprise. "It was out of the blue. The driver hadn't seen anyone following him." Manukau Mayor Len Brown says he's accepted Melissa Lee's apology for disparaging comments she made about south Auckland. The National MP told a Mt Albert by-election candidates meeting that a new motorway could stop criminals coming from south Auckland and committing crime in Mount Albert. Prime Minister John Key today labelled the remarks as "stupid". Mr Brown said he put the comments down to the heat of battle, and accepted Ms Lee meant the focus to be on criminals rather than south Auckland. Ms Lee, a list MP and National's candidate in the June 13 Mt Albert by-election, made the comment at a candidates' meeting last night. There was heated debate at the meeting on the New Zealand Transport Agency's $1.4 billion motorway proposal, announced by the Government on Tuesday, which will use a combination of above ground and underground sections to make up the 4.5km Auckland motorway extension between Waterview and Mt Roskill. Ms Lee told the meeting people drove to the electorate from south Auckland, and that the new motorway extension could divert some of that traffic and criminals from Mt Albert. Mr Key told reporters this morning it was "absolutely appropriate" that Ms Lee had apologised for her comments. "It was a regrettable statement, probably one made in the heat of a by-election campaign," he said. The girl team came to New Zealand on the first leg of their Outbackwards Tour. We got there an hour early thinking not many people would be there (as it started at 4 and we left school early to go) but we were wrong. The park was fully packed and there was not much space left. However when the tour bus came everybody left their seats to mob the team and we gladly accepted them. McCrank, Mo and Wilson didn't skate much although McCrank had a good reason (He'd had an operation on his knee and was using a walking stick to get around). Wilson had a little jam before sitting up with Mike Mo who as my friends put it "Was pulling an Antwuan" (Antwuan didn't skate on the Krew Tour and they were real sad). Sean Malto and Alex Olsen were the quickest of the bat throwing down multiple tricks while Koston, Carroll and Howard just rode about doing tricks when the need arose. Kennedy was trying to get a few tricks on the box and we asked him to try a Merlin Twist a couple of times but he was so tired and hot he couldn't land it.
