This video charts the growth of the Internet by producing a map of which ranges of IP addresses have been allocated in time, from 1982 to July 2010. The map is divided into a grid of 16x16 squares, each of which is an /8 block of IPv4 addresses, or approximately 16.7 million addresses. The map format is inspired by the xkcd map of the same from 2006: xkcd.com The data used to generate the map was taken from Geoff Huston's "IPv4 Address Report" at www.potaroo.net More specifically, the "Listing of the IPv4 space with status and dates" link. The Hilbert curve coordinates for mapping an IP address to space were created using Luis Alejandro Gonzalez Miranda's code from forums.xkcd.com

By now the Cult of Rapture server has made its rounds on the internet and gotten all of the attention it well and truly deserved. However, back when I first set the minecraft server up, most of us hadn't caught wind of it yet, so we set about making Rapture on our own. We were not trying to precisely duplicate Rapture. Given that the build server regularly hosts 30+ people, trying to precisely recreate a game that some might not have played didn't seem like a worthwhile endeavor. What we did, instead, was try and retain the flavor of Rapture, while still enjoying the process of making our own original creations. Obviously, this means we have structures that did not exist in the game - such as our giant Surface Recreation Dome, which is one of the main hubs of the city. With that said, we're still tremendously proud of our accomplishments so far, so we put this video together to celebrate our current progress. I just want to emphasize that all of the construction on the map is done by hand. Nothing was editor'd in. Admins and mods on the main build server do spawn blocks for people when needed, but only for things that can't otherwise by regularly attained such as ice blocks or lava. Initially I was using OpenMPT, however after a few internet queries I found FamiTracker, a program for writing NES/FamiComp music. Since the NES was my first game console as a kid, and 8-bit music/chiptunes are the greatest, as a project I decided to write the galaxy map song in FamiTracker using the VRC6 expansion chip since the song is equally great. The Ending might seem to just cut off, but that is because I arranged the song to seamlessly loop. Anyway, I thought this song was a worthy youtube upload, so I spent a bit of time and made a GIF of what a NES-like galaxy map might look like for nostalgia's sake.
