Shopping in Marrakesh

Shopping in Marrakesh is a mixed bag. You can find everything and anything from all over Morocco. Most goods are produced outside Marrakesh in small villages in the countryside and are cheaper their. Just north of the Djemaa el Fna most of the souks are like a grand bizzare. It is difficult to find artisans producing the crafts you want to buy. Head north around the Ben Youssef Medersa to find craftsmen producing wares by hand in the their shops. We were surprised to see how few tourists were shopping in Marrakesh. Things have definitely slowed down with the economic down turn. One real turn off about the medina is all motor bike traffic. Bikes fly through the small narrow streets with out regard to pedestrians. The exhaust of the bikes is another nuisance. There are no bikes in the Fez medina or in the Meknes medina so it disappointing to see it here in Marrakesh. Marrakesh is still a great place to shop and there are friendly people everywhere. We didnt see the high pressure sales that we expected.

Crosby Nash BBC Simple Man - Marrakesh Express (1 of 5)

These videos are from a September 11 1970 half hour television performance Graham and David did for the BBC. It was right after CSNY had finished their famous...or infamous... four way street summer tour. with stories of epic melt downs and cosmic feedings between them all, the all star endeavor which had only began two years prior had all but imploded on itself. Fortunately, all of the guys didn't abandon their relationships all together. Neil recruited Stephen, David, and Graham for backing vocals on After the Gold Rush and Harvest. Crosby invited, among other amazing musicians, Nash, and Young to sing and play on his consummate album If I Could Only Remember My Name. (Interestingly, of all the musicians David invited to play on his album: Nash, Young, Jerry Garcia,Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart,Bill Kreutzmann, Jorma Kaukonen, Joni Mitchell, Grace Slick, David Freiberg, Paul Kantner, Jack Casady, Gregg Rolie, and Michael Shrieve...missing was Stephen Stills) Of all the members of CSNY David and Graham's relationship seemed to be the one that stayed most friendly. In these videos you can really see how jovial and genuinely humorous they were with each other and with their audience. not to mention their majestic vocal blending. (the two part harmonies, which sound like five part, on Guinnevere and Song With no Words are particularly mind blowing) If you dig this flavor of Crosby and Nash i would recommend finding a copy of their 10/10/1971 live recording Another Stoney Evening ...

Loreena McKennitt Marrakesh Night Market

Loreena writes in the CD booklet about this song: March 16, 1993 - Arrived tonight in Marrakesh and am staying on the edge of the market. It is Ramadan and there is heightened activity all around. I am struck by the hooded features of men as they pass through the lights and shadows: they look monk-like. Horses, carriages, cars, bicycles and thousands of people are embroiled in the activities of the night ... a cacophony of sound. I retreat to a rooftop café to watch while sipping mint tea ... many circles of twenty or so people are scattered around the market, each involved in their own drama of music, storytelling monkeys on men's shoulders, or cobras being coaxed to "dance" on rugs; "magic" concoctions of bone, seeds, stones and spices are sold ... women are veiled to a great degree ... I am stuck by the sense of intrigue the environment creates; as much is concealed as is revealed ... Music and lyrics by Loreena McKennitt From: The mask and mirror (1994). Loreena McKennitt - Marrakesh night market They're gathered in circles the lamps light their faces The crescent moon rocks in the sky The poets of drumming keep heartbeats suspended The smoke swirls up and then dies Would you like my mask? would you like my mirror? cries the man in the shadowing hood You can look at yourself you can look at each other or you can look at the face, the face of your god The stories are woven and fortunes are told The truth is measured by the weight of your gold The magic lies scattered ...

David Wenham (Marrakesh Night Market with lyrics)

I made this tribute for my good friend candrashamelle and learned how expressive David Wenham is,above all I know how rare such actors are in Hollywood! For him I took an artist who is from Canada and has roots in Ireland/Scotland. This song/sound, Marrakesh Night Market, however is inspired from the eastern countries and their culture in Middle East, North Africa and in eastern Europe. In my opinion the song shows passion, enjoyment, mysticism, sadness, might, also like the enchantment of the east and I think the sound fits really good with David Wenham, because he shows passion, enjoyment, serenity as well as sadness and fury. (And one reason was, that he reminds me at Rosamunde Pilcher rubbish when I would have took a too conry song, and he is a too good actor for this cheap literature movies, anyway how they are named in English....but that is only my opinion!) I hope he keeps up acting in good, different movies/series and that you all like the clip =) (And sorry for the bad quality, my windows movie maker sucks) I took clips from After the Deluge (TV-Series), Dust, The Lord Of The Rings and from the Trailer Pope Joan. The pics are rom the internet, and the painting in the end is from Adam Cullen. Tschüss, Cześć i Ceau! ( Think because my mother comes from Poland and my grand grandmother came from Romania and further.....so I probably took such a song ;-)) candrashamelle: Hoff du magsch, sosch sägs wenn nöd, ha eba ko pop/rock oder western musik gno, ha denkt mol was ...

Chris Dougherty - Marrakesh to Vietnam

A song I made from one continuous track of improvisation. I had a sound and tuning i really liked, but haven't been able to recreate it since the initial recording (a very late and blurry night). So i mixed it together speeding up or slowing down using a one track recorder, but lost the originals and so had to keep it the way it is, errors quirks and all. The video pretty much represents my feeling of the song and what was in my mind at the time of playing

Marrakesh cafe 'suicide bombing' kills 15 people

A massive explosion ripped through a busy cafe in the Moroccan city of Marrakesh on Thursday, killing at least 15 people and wounding as many as 20 others. The Argana restaurant on Jamaa el-Fnaa square is popular with tourists and 10 foreigners have been confirmed dead. Authorities suspect a suicide bombing after nails were found in one of the dead bodies. If proved to be the work of Islamic militants, it would be Morocco's biggest terrorist attack since suicide bombings killed 45 people in Casablanca eight years ago. ... www.euronews.net
