10 Minute Topics: Jewish Marriage Practices

The next in a weekly series of 10 minute topics teaching about various topics within Judaism. This week's topic is: Jewish Marriage Practices. The concept of marriage in Judaism is that of an ideal state of personal existence. A man without a wife or a woman without a husband is considered incomplete. According to halachah, marriage consists of two separate acts, called erusin (also known as kiddushin) and nissuin. Traditionally, these two acts were separate and distinct but today, in most communities, they generally occur on the same day. The erusin is the betrothal ceremony and the nissuin is the actual marriage ceremony. Intermarriage America

Before 1965, 10% of Jews who married, did so outside the faith. books.google.co.nz Middle East countries don't recognize civil marriages, and no religious authority will perform an interfaith wedding. Lebanon and Israel are different in that they recognize civil marriages as long as they're performed abroad, and the closest venue abroad is Cyprus. Who is ruling the country? In a way, its the religious parties, says Wakim, 39, a Lebanese groom. Not separating the church from government from the beginning... this is the biggest problem. in 2008, by a Cyprus government count, 523 couples from Lebanon and 1533 from Israel were married here. In Israel, the Orthodox rabbis who control marriage and divorce argue that their strict definition of Jewishness — it passes only through the mother — is vital to preserve the unity of a long-persecuted people, and to spare the offspring of mixed marriages from inheriting similar problems when their time comes to marry.

Rabbi Amnon Yitzhak on Jewish modesty

Rabbi Amnon Yitzhak discusses on the importance of covering the body and hair for women in Judaism. Modesty (Tzniut) in Judaism is very important, it shows the love someone has for Gd by covering their hair with a Tichel (Mitpachat) after marriage and believing in the laws the one Gd of Israel gave to our ancestors.

Tichel/Mitpachat - Why Jewish women cover - Jewish Modesty

A Jewish religious teacher, Asher explains why Religious married Jewish women cover their hair with a Tichel/Mitpcahat (Scarf). In Judaism it specifically mentions only the hair should be covered, not the face as well as the women should only cover her hair with a Tichel/Mitpachat after marriage for her husband to only see her hair. When a married women wears the Tichel/Mitpachat, people can tell who is married and single. Asher here gives Halakha (Jewish Laws) and proof from the Torah, Gemara, Talmud and Mishnah why women are commanded to cover their hair with a Tichel/Mitpachat after marriage as well as why according to Jewish modesty and religious texts, Jewish women are expected to never wear pants and only long dresses, whereas in Islam they have allowed many Muslim girls to wear jeans and pants which is absolutely forbidden by Observant Jewish Law.

Samaritan marriage - 05 Oct 07

For centuries the Samaritans, an ancient Jewish community, have observed a strict code of inter-marriage to preserve its traditions. But a shortage of women and genetic diseases have forced them to start marrying outsiders. Al Jazeera's Jacky Rowland went to Mount Gerizim in the West Bank, where half the world's Samaritans live.

Jewish Wedding: His Majesty Requests: The Best For Last

www.RATW.org http Since biblical times, the Hebrew wedding has been esteemed as a building of joy with great festivities and celebration. Joyful music and dancing, along with merrymaking by the guests, including clowning, juggling, and comic versifying. Regarded as king and queen, the bride and groom dress in elaborate clothing, wearing crowns upon their heads while seated upon throne-like chairs, which are lifted during the jubilant revelry. After seven days in the huppah, the bride and groom join their special guests or Bnai-huppah for a festive meal called, seudat mitzyah. The marriage supper, along with the music and entertainment, add happiness to the bride and grooms new life together.

A date with a jewish girl

Traditional Judaism does not permit interfaith marriages. The Torah states that the children of such marriages would be lost to Judaism (Deut. 7:3-4), and experience has shown the truth of this passage all too well. The 2000 National Jewish Population Survey found that only a third of interfaith couples raise their children Jewish, despite increasing efforts in the Reform and Conservative communities to welcome interfaith couples. This may reflect the fact that Jews who intermarry are not deeply committed to their religion in the first place: if they were, why would they marry someone who did not share it? Dennis Prager and Joseph Telushkin provide an excellent discussion of the issues involved in intermarriage in their book The Nine Questions People Ask About Judaism (Simon & Schuster, 1981). They note that if the non-Jewish spouse truly shares the same values as the Jewish spouse, then the non-Jew is welcome to convert to Judaism, and if the non-Jew does not share the same values, then the couple should not be marrying in the first place. Source: www.jewfaq.org Some Christians believe that : the Old Testament isn't required to be followed by Christians and "gentiles" (non-Jews), the New Testament is what Christians firmly believe in with a few exceptions from the Old testament such as the ten commandments are the law for Christians as well as Jews to abide by. although Jesus said in ((Matthew 5:17-18): Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am ...

Ricky + Justine's South African Jewish Wedding video (in Thailand) !!!

How do you start describing this couple and their wedding? Amazing. Inspiring. Fateful. Romantic. Um, I'm really at a loss to come up with spectacular enough adjectives. So let's just give you the story. Ricky and Justine are a couple of ridiculously good looking, ridiculously lovely, rock-climbing-mad Jewish South Africans, who met by chance one year ago, on the day of Justine's grandparent's wedding Anniversary, and fell in love whilst rock-climbing in Asia. (Did I mention Justine lives in Australia?) Naturally, they decided to get married in Thailand, being kinda half-way between South Africa and Australia, and, impressively, 80 of their friends and family travelled across the world to attend the wedding. Suffice to say, the party was pretty amazing, and continued for several days. To top it all off, they were married, in spectacular jewish ceremony, by a South African rabbi who happened to be grandson to the very rabbi who had married justine's grandparents on the same day two generations earlier in South Africa. Are you confused yet? Does it sound awesome yet? Despite the fact that we were shooting for 17 hours straight... Despite the fact that we tallied up over 20km between us walking/running between locations (the island has no roads), in sweltering heat, each carrying 10kg of video gear all day..... I just wish I could do it all over again. Have I succeeding in making this wedding sound totally awesome? It was. AWESOME. Just watch the video dammit!

Marriage of Miss Rose Carmel and Mr Solly Gershcowit (1925)

This film is available to view as part of Oy Britannia, a new Mediatheque collection uncovering insights, injustices and hidden histories across a century of Jewish representation on British screens - www.bfi.org.uk For a couple with such Jewish-sounding surnames, the wedding celebrations of Miss Carmel and Mr Gerschcowit are distinctly secular in flavour. In fact, the 20s are far more in evidence than Judaism: the music comes courtesy of the San Diego Dance Band, the female guests sport flapper dresses and bobs, and the dancing is more 'Strictly' than 'shtetl'. But look beyond the blushing bride for a magical glimpse of the East End's rag trade, and while the young women channel Tallulah Bankhead, the young men grin nervously in their stiff dark suits, eternal bar mitzvah boys. Watch out for the boy showing off for the camera at the reception - once you've spotted him, it's hard to look at anyone else. MESSIANIC JEWISH WEDDING, BONE OF MY BONE

MESSIANIC JEWISH WEDDING, BONE OF MY BONE Hi! We are youth ministers and Translators of Amightywind Ministry. We would like to share with you a video of our Messianic Jewish Pentecostal YAH Ordained Wedding. We had the honor of having a Holy Prophet of YAH, our Spiritual Mother, Elisabeth Elijah Nikomia aka YAHSladynred, be used mightily to perform the marriage ceremony over the phone. This was a miracle because we always have problems with our phones, static, breaking up etc, but in this occasion, it was so anointed by YAH the sound on both ends was perfect, I was AMAZED! The anointing in the room was supernatural! Not to mention it was Day of Pentecost, June 8, 2011! I appreciate and love all who were able to come, wish we had the funds to b able to bring EVERYONE! Before YAH brought us together, we were both tried and tested and placed in the fire, but we both prevailed and what YAH has joined together, no man, nor woman, nor child, nor devil, nor demon, can separate. We were crafted, molded and brought together by the Holy Hand of YAHUVEH GOD ALMIGHTY. May this video serve as proof that Amightywind does not break marriages, nor families, but brings together those who love GOD wholeheartedly with all their mind, spirit and soul. We will never put each other before YAHUSHUA (JESUS CHRIST), but together we will stand before the enemy and battle together, and work together. This Holy Marriage represents the Bride of YAHUSHUA.
