After 2009's film, IP MAN, became a massive box office hit, savvy Hong Kong producers, eager to make a buck, unleashed a whole wave of old school martial arts films that went back to basics: no CGI, no fancy wire work, no fakery. Instead, they were all about blazing hand-to-hand combat, hard-falling stuntmen and lightning fast kung fu. In conjunction with the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office New York, this year's NYAFF features a special focus on Hong Kong's new wave of old school kung fu. The line-up includes Jackie Chan's latest movie, LITTLE BIG SOLDIER; a rollicking action comedy starring a gallery of old school greats like Bruce Leung and Chen Kuan-tai, GALLANTS; an encore presentation of the IP MAN, the movie that started it all, and IP MAN 2 which has become the number one Asian movie of 2010, out-grossing even Bollywood's biggest hits at the box office. The Kung Fu School, "Shi Xiao Long Martial Arts Academy", was established in 1980. The Kung Fu School is located in the south of Songshan mountain. To the east is the Zhong Yue Temple and to the west of the Kung Fu School, the Shaolin Temple. Location of the Kung Fu School is West of Bei Huan Road, Deng Feng City, Henan Province, China. Students between the ages of 5 years and 25 years, of both sexes, may be admitted, subject to conditions. Foreign students must first obtain a residential permit from the local government offices in Deng Feng, before making an application to the Kung Fu School. There are different classes at the Kung Fu School, including childrens Full-Time education of 5 years, in accordance with the national 9 year compulsory education, with subjects including Chinese, English, Mathematics etc., and successful graduates receiving certificates issued by the State Education Commission. Martial Arts Training classes including traditional Kung Fu cover a period of 3 years. Qigong Full-time classes are for a period of 2 years. The training for professional coaches with at least two years professional martial arts experience is 6 months. The period of schooling in the Boarding Class is 3 years. Enrolment at the Kung Fu School of Martial Arts is made twice a year. The first enrolment takes place in the middle of February and the second enrolment during the summer vacation. There is a one month vacation during the Spring Festival

The pagoda forest in Shaolin Temple was a concentration of tomb pagodas for eminent monks, abbots and ranking monks at the temple. A rough count shows more than two hundred fifty tomb pagodas of various sizes, making it the biggest pagoda forest in China. The forest stands at the foot of Shaoshi Mountain about half a kilometer west of Shaolin Temple and is composed of pagodas dating from 791 to 1803. Most are stone and brick structures of one to seven storeys, under fifteen meters high--much smaller than pagodas for Buddhist relics--but they all carry the exact year of their construction and many carvings and inscriptions. They are in a variety of styles, but are mainly multi-eaved and pavilion-style. Their shapes are varied, including polygonal, cylindrical, vase, conical and monolithic, making the pagoda forest an exhibition of ancient pagodas, carvings and calligraphy of various dynasties. Here also lie the remains and traces of the activities of some eminent foreign monks. For example, in the eastern part of the forest a tomb pagoda built in 1339 in the Yuan Dynasty bears an epitaph written by a Japanese monk at Shaolin Temple, which is of elegant language and excellent handwriting. In the western part of the forest is a tomb pagoda built in 1564 in the Ming Dynasty for an Indian monk. Besides the pagoda forest there are many invaluable tomb pagodas scattered around Shaolin Temple. They include Faro Pagoda and Tongguang Pagoda, built in 689 and 771 in the Tang Dynasty <b>...</b>
